What size would I buy in terms of a man’s shirt if I am a 6/8 on top?

I read Jess Carter Morley’s column in the Guardian yesterday all about a button down shirt and rather than buy a new one I was going to buy a men’s shirt cheaply for a charity shop. What size, roughly, should I be looking at?

I’m a 10 and buy a size small however, mens shirts are not made for women so the bottom hem rarely goes over your hips.

I don't think there would be a small enough one. It would be an XS or smaller. Maybe look at boys shirts although that would limit the choice.

In the past I've found some very nice boys shirts in Zara. The arms are a little short, but I'd just roll up the sleeves. Much much better quality for the price than a woman's shirt, I found.

I still have and wear a gorgeous age 16 shirt that was my son's, from Massimo Dutti when they did clothes for that age.

Zara boys cotton scarves are also good. I have one that a friend who works in fashion thought came from Paul Smith.

S or XS.

I am size 14-16 top & like a man's medium, woman's large.

Sizing hasn't really had a "meaning" for over 20 years.

I really wouldn't try to extrapolate from one (variable) size to another.

I know it's stating the obvious, but take a tape measure. You need not just something that goes round you, but also about 2-4 inches extra (to allow for flat front v bust darts). Unfortunately this may mean the shoulders hang off you (not usually a problem with soft fabrics) but also there will be more width at the waistline. So think 80s sort of silhouette where a "boxy" top half gets tucked in. Not something that goes smoothly down your siides
