Alternative prom outfit

My dd (16) does want to go to her school prom, but does not want to wear a dress. She hasn't worn a dress or skirt for years and hasn't needed anything except casual clothes. Her first priority is comfort, and she dresses well in jeans, shirts and nice knits and looks fantastic but she doesn't much like browsing shops. I'm sure we can find her a great outfit. I just don't know where to start really? Looking for brand suggestions that might be inspiring (smart enough but not "too much") or to hear from anyone who is or has been in the same boat. I guess I was similar at her age though we didn't have a prom of course. I would have worn a miniskirt/dress with DMs or something like that if needed, but she won't go for that.

Whatever we end up with will have to be worn with vans/DMs/similar. She won't really wear any other shoes I don't think.

I'd suggest tux or suit as one option, or jumpsuit. All can be done as glam on unglam as she prefers! And with Katherine Hepburn or Marlene Dietrich or Diane Keaton as inspiration. I hope she has an amazing time.

A jumpsuit? www.boohoo.com/womens/playsuits-jumpsuits/jumpsuits/prom

Jumpsuit, suit or tux, none are unusual at our school.

Depends how she feels, shorts with sheer tights and a blazer.

I agree with the tuxedo idea. DD looked fabulous at a recent event, DMs with laces replaced with diamanté laces, white shirt and jewelled tie and braces. Casual chic with party overtones. Hope she has a lovely time.

My daughter is going to prom in a velvet green suit from Zara. We bought it just before Christmas as I thought there would be more choice around that time of year. She has red hair and never where's skirts/dresses. There are similar on eBay.

One of my sons friends wore a tux jacket, plain t shirt, skinny jeans and dms. She looked great and felt comfortable. My daughter who normally wears baggy jumpers ( Boho charity shop is her style) Ended up going for something completely different and wore a vintage prom dress with a massive hooped skirt, white gloves, tiara ( disney princess/ marie antoniette is the only way to describe it) . She really enjoyed surprising everyone!

Oh these replies have really cheered me up! All these outfits sound amazing. I'll check out Zara and keep an eye out in the city centre. If anyone has other suggestions of where we could go for a nosey, shout!

I was going to suggest a velvet trouser suit or a tux. Something silk or sparkly underneath such as a camisole or a posh t-shirt or a collared shirt with sparkly collar or plain with a silk patterned bow tie. Or a vintage velvet ‘smoking jacket’. All to be worn with flat shoes of what ever style - trainers or loafers. Good on her not feeling she has to conform to wearing a dress if thats not her style. She’ll have a fab time if she feels comfortable.

Niftythrifter · 03/03/2023 16:05

Cos Had a lovely velvet suit in around Christmas time so maybe hungry that down on Vinted etc. What about a jumpsuit?

GenerallyGreenerGrass · 03/03/2023 16:05

Just to say, you could hire a tux if she thinks it’s a good idea.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 03/03/2023 16:08

My dd wore a black jumpsuit. We gothed it up a bit to suit her style and she looked amazing, but still her and comfortable.

How about something like this with a nice top and blazer. www.marksandspencer.com/tapered-ankle-grazer-trousers/p/clp22549725#intid=plpnav_pid_pg1pip48g2r20c2

Quite a few girls wore suits to my dds’ proms. They looked great. That green velvet Zara one looks amazing @Florenceandthevaccine - I had the privilege of watching all the girls come out of both proms and that would’ve looked totally chic and not out of place at all.

Hope she goes and is able to feel comfortable op. Young people do happily embrace diverse styles if my dds’ school was anything to go by.
