This comes up all the time time.

I actually think the two are immutable.

You can't have one without the other.

Stylish people have a very particular ownership of themselves. They know what they love. See Daphne Guiness, Grace Coddington, Tilda Swinton. These women are stylish as fuck.

BUT, they are also fashionable. They are all very interested in fashion, and keep themselves current, by keeping an eye on, and being very interested in 'Fashion'.

I honestly don't think it's possible to be stylish without being fashoinable.

Fashionable doesn't mean fashion victim, it simply means, being interested in fashion and adapting current looks that fit in with one's personal style.

@safeplanet I did like her BAFTA'S hair.

Her and Pippa's makeup is always bad though.

it's just too harsh. I hate their eyeliner.

OP posts:
safeplanet · 26/02/2023 13:20

yes the eyeliner is dated

StephenDedalus · 26/02/2023 13:20

This is hilarious because on the trainers thread when someone said Mat Hancock wearing Stan Smith trainers was the kiss of death there was much protesting that it was quite ridiculous to think like that & if you like wearing something then just wear it & it made no difference who else was wearing it..

And here we have it again. Just in a different context. 😁

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2023 13:21

Just googled BAFTAs monochrome look like that is very striking

Well played

StephenDedalus · 26/02/2023 13:22

I did not like those black gloves with the white dress at all.

Markle is so contrived and unstylish, it gave me pause when I saw her featured on Max Mara's website in one of their icon coats. Ridiculous I know , as I love Max Mara coats (fortunately her one isn't mine)

well Max Mara coats are a bit contrived! 😁

Yes they are I suppose. I'm not sure "contrived" is necessarily always a bad thing.

VB and PoW are contrived in that I think VB likes to be elegant and dresses to be elegant. PoW has to be elegant and dresses to be elegant. To me that's "contrived" in a good way.

MM just strikes me as too putting forward an image which she thinks will make people like her. MM and the French tuck, "contrived" in a bad way.

Willowtre1 · 26/02/2023 13:26

I'd say some people follow the latest fashion and can look objectively good, but it's not based on any originality or flair and so I don't see it as stylish. Some follow it and look awful, neither fashionable (in that they are showcasing the lastest fashions in a good way), or stylish at all.

Then there are people who's sense of style is about their way of putting together clothes and wearing them with insouciance, but I would say they need to have a knowledge of fashion in order to look stylish. If they consistently get it 'right' and it looks effortless all the time, to me that is stylish. Often see this with friends who clearly have an interest in fashion and seem to know exactly what to put with what, and look effortless.

I am not stylish or fashionable, but can look presentable and I think I succeed in making tweaks to my clothes so I don't look dated. Mostly I don't have enough confidence in how I put things together to be daring and overtly stylish though!

I'm not really understanding your point @StephenDedalus?

The gloves were good. I think it was a 'look', she was definitely wearing it. I liked it.

Agree - PoW often looks lovely but not stylish - hair dated (though it looked nice at the BAFTAs) and make up consistently terrible; aging and the opposite of fresh/modern. She does occasionally look amazing in evening wear but usually plays it safe.

MM beautiful but always snoozeville and wears the wrong shape - belted coats etc - for her figure.

VB the very opposite of stylish - always trying so hard, no personality to her outfits, her looks are always so effortful and humourless.

Kate Moss (not talking about evening wear) always in faded black. She could have such a great 60s/Birken vibe but gravitates towards the rock star wife.

NatashaDancing · 26/02/2023 13:30

This was one of the best dresses at MM's wedding

I loved that orange look

Mitfordian · 26/02/2023 13:33

I think people who have a 'style' are always the most impressive. People where you say oh 'so and so would definitely wear that'. They look good in their own specific way. Looking 'good' is always the aim.

I agree that to be stylish, you can't be terribly dated (unless your specific style is intentionally of an era) but people wearing super fashionable clothes mostly look terrible. Being avant garde often means you look a mess to the mere mortal.

MM generally looks good because she can be more casual than Kate and she is absolutely teeny (which unfortunately makes everything look better). Kate is not stylish - everything she wears is so ageing, despite being very thin. Every single one of Kate's outfits is somehow just a little 'off'.

LimeCheesecake · 26/02/2023 13:34

@NatashaDancing - sorry to say but at the start of this winter, wide brimmed felt hats were all over insta on the heads of the “40+ fashion” woman.

but normally I would say the one exception to the “stylish but not fashionable” is if you are heavily influenced by the fashions to a previous era. (You do though have to add the occasional nod to current fashion, or you can look a bit like you’ve just popped out from dress rehearsals from the local AmDram group)

StephenDedalus · 26/02/2023 13:35

My point is when it comes to the nebulous question of what style seeing people we don't admire wearing our chosen item whether it's trainers or a max mara coat, it has an affect on how we might feel about the said item & its perceived 'style' or 'coolness '

This was much debated & scoffed at on the controversial trainers thread.

But to me it's always been an integral part of style / fashion & is what leads to the constant shifts.

As for the black gloves, yes it was a look, yes she wore it, no I still don't like it

NatashaDancing · 26/02/2023 13:35

Fashionable or stylish?

Sarah Murdoch at Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch's wedding. I love this dress

(I'm biased as I have an almost identical dress from Dutch designer Pauw)

safeplanet · 26/02/2023 13:35

I didn't like the black gloves, thought the dress was too soft.

safeplanet · 26/02/2023 13:38

everything she wears is so ageing, despite being very thin. Every single one of Kate's outfits is somehow just a little 'off'.

I know it's considered sacrilege to think this because we are meant to aspire to POWs figure. Yes she's tall & thin but I think she has a long body so has to be very careful about proportions and waist height. She looks great in dresses with a high waistline.

StephenDedalus · 26/02/2023 13:38

Agree safe planet - the statement of the gloves was wrong with that dress

The navy dress above is very conservative & I wouldn't notice it at a society wedding

safeplanet · 26/02/2023 13:39

MM is boxier but I don't think that's a bad thing & looks good in separates.

safeplanet · 26/02/2023 13:39

The navy dress works because Sarah is beautiful. Harder to pull of if not!

I've no idea who "instas" are. I don't follow any one on social media. I don't have Twitter, Facebook or Instagram accounts. I'm not sure what point you're making. I've been wearing hats like that for over 30 years. Maybe an "insta" saw me?

Are you seriously suggesting I wear hats because some "insta" said they're in?

RhadamanthNemes · 26/02/2023 13:42

@NatashaDancing @StephenDedalus

I adore that look from Sarah Murdoch. It's not for everyone though, it's a very grown-up look.

I also like the orange that you posted @NatashaDancing. Not the shoes though. They are too big!

Sarah Murdoch's look is great because she's angular and has Hitchcock blonde hair, styled well. Good lipstick too.

I bloody love that dress - it's one of my two absolute favourite wedding outfits. (The other was Bianca Jagger's suit and hat when she married Mick). I envy you having one like it.

As for whether it's fashion or style, I'd say there was a bit of both going on and that's why it's so clever.
