What shoes and do I wear tights with midi dresses right now

I followed the herd and worn white trainers with midi dresses last summer but what about now?
I’ve got a couple of smart dinners to go to, got the dress but bare legs will be cold and trainers look a bit off.
Please don’t say ankle boots, I tried and it’s too try hard for my 50 year old staid look.
Loafers look like school shoes, heels look dated and my shoe boots look ridiculous.

That's a lovely dress.

Thank you. Eponine do very nice dresses.

Thin natural tights with loafers

even saw a teen in skin coloured tights the other day

and even if it’s not cool, you will be comfortable and not too cold

My teen and her friends all wear natural tights apparently only really old people like me wear opaque tights now.

That's so not true- unless "old people' is anyone who's over 20

icefishing · 25/02/2023 01:31

It probably is to them 🤣

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/02/2023 10:11

Opaque tights only really work with short dresses imo, or with tighter fitting midi skirts. I prefer 30 denier or less with looser midi skirts.

The other problem with the OP’s dress is the colour, as somebody else mentioned. For black boots, it would need a blazer or leather jacket to balance it, I think.

Opaques go with any style but if any there is style they don't go with it would be a tighter fitting skirt which is likely to be more formal.

My teen (17) wouldn't be caught dead in flesh coloured tights but equally doesn't wear opaques either. Depending on the weather its bare legs in summer or very sheer (10 denier) black tights at other times. It just goes to show there are no hard & fast 'rules' to any of this..

So much depends on your environment

Well my tighter fitting skirts are not formal. You’re making assumptions.

I wasn't referring to you personally and I wasn't assuming anything.

Straight skirts generally tend to be more tailored than loose skirts, particularly if it's office wear. Opaque tights generally tend to be less formal than sheer tights. I personally can't see the slightest difference on the suitability of opaque tights with straight or full skirts but if I had to pick one I'd say opaque tights were slightly less suitable with a tailored straight skirt.

I’m talking about this sort of thing.

It's the boots, not the tights, that makes that outfit look weird with that skirt (which I wouldn't call a tailored skirt anyway)

The, skirt, boots and opaque tights - OK
The skirt, shoes and fine tights - OK

TheDead · 25/02/2023 15:00

I think the boots look great with that story & I would also wear opaques with that too

TheDead · 25/02/2023 15:00

Skirt not story

When I struggle with this type of thing I hit Google!
Try Googling midi dress winter outfit and select images.
I just did that, looks like it's the dreaded ankle boot or maybe knee highs?

Very good advice! Bound to be some inspiration in Google Images

The boots are fine with the skirt, but not with sheer tights. The expanse of pale leg between the end of the cuff of the boot and the hem of the skirt looks odd. Looks as if she'd forgotten to put on tights.

Shoes and sheer or opaque tights would be ok.

TheDead · 25/02/2023 15:13

Well as i said I think she looks great as she is plus I would wear opaques with it too. There is no law about these things. It's down to personal taste / style

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/02/2023 15:29

Yes, my point is that it isn’t a tailored skirt and that it would look best with opaque tights and boots. Black boots are difficult to wear with bare legs or flesh coloured tights.

Um yes and I've agreed. That's what I've said too black boots and bare legs or flesh coloured tights with a straight skirt look weird.

The skirt wouldn't look odd with shoes and sheer tights.
