37 and clueless

As the title says 37 and clueless. I have absolutely no idea what my style is, how to dress to suit my body shape or my age.

I currently live in baggy jumpers/T-shirts/oversized cardigans with either skinny jeans but mostly leggings and trainers.

I'm incredibly body conscious, and have little disposable income for clothes so a big shopping spree with lots of trying on isn't really possible. Any ideas where to start?

If you have a John Lewis nearby then they do free style consultations which I think you can walk in and see if they are free or by appointment. It might be worth going there and seeing what they advise and being honest about your budget in regard to what you wear the most. They have an range called Anyday where the prices are more reasonable (£30 for jeans) but in my experience if there is any reduced stock then they usually have that sitting out with the full price stock but on a sale rail in the section.

Your style is basically a blend of 1. what you like, 2. what looks decent on you, 3. what you can put up with/afford.

Your post sort of suggests that you're not too sure about 2. Do you have a clear idea of 1? If you know what you like you can start with looking for shops that stock that sort of style as default and then figure out a small capsule wardrobe from there. You can also do a Stitchfix order or similar to get sent some ideas - you don't need to pay for the clothes you don't keep but you will need to pay for a stylist fee if you don't keep anything.

Charity shops are well worth a look too!
