How do you make perfume stick?

Gwdihooooo · 19/02/2023 09:26

What do you spray it on to?

if I’m wearing a scarf I’ll spray it on to that. If not I’ll spray it on to my top layer of clothing.

But I never feel like I have that waft of smell I get when I walk past others in public… If you know what I mean?

Where has the best sticking power? Is it directly on to the skin?

I used to wear a perfume locket, it has openings for the scent to emerge and fits a small piece of fabric inside for you to spray the perfume onto. Then your body will warm it up as you wear it.

That’s clever!

That's a very cute solution! Did you find it effective? I can't imagine you get a huge amount of projection from it though?

BeatricePortinari · 20/02/2023 16:00

I layer and spray on scarves.

But the quality and type of the perfume is the main thing. Citrus notes and cologne disappear very quickly. Musk and oud last ages.

I love to smell people's perfume. I link memory and emotion deeply to scent and I love the moments of linking a passing scent to a memory or place.

Obviously not everyone is going to enjoy perfume but you can't please everyone all the time.

I love smelling other people's perfumes! Some miserable people on this thread. I swear the negativity on mumsnet just gets worse and worse.

This!

I like to smell other people's perfume I find it intriguing! And I remember the 80s, walking around the City of London and women in power suits all wearing those big scents!! I didn't wear them myself but it was quite entertaining.

CornedBeef451 · 20/02/2023 20:45

My miserableness is due to migraines which can be triggered by other people's perfume.

I once got stuck in a train carriage with a woman doused in Angel and it was too packed to get off. I was off work for a week lying in a darkened room.

So1invictus · 20/02/2023 20:52

I'm in bed with a migraine right now, and no, I don't want to smell any perfume. But that's now.

I'm also a perfume collector and have hundreds.

@Gwdihooooo It depends also on the type of perfume, and the notes. And of course a parfum will last longer than a toilette.

PS the poster who keeps joining these threads to talk about how "toxic" perfume is presumably doesn't wash their clothes, brush their teeth or clean their house. It's a commonly peddled myth that chemicals= bad and natural=good and phthalates (which they are fond of telling us are in perfume) are so highly regulated in the EU that they aren't in anything in high enough doses anymore.

That sounds like the old vinaigrettes that they used to carry in history to ward off the stench the streets 👍

The point of wearing perfume is to smell nice/appealing and for others to smell you, surely you must have heard of this?

Except most perfumes don't appeal to most people. Being stuck in a lift/bus/office with someone who drowns themselves in perfume is awful

Oh that’s why you never see perfume in shops! 💡

Apparently you do get noseblind to your own perfume. Have 2 or 3 different ones and swap them every so often.

Friendofdennis · 20/02/2023 22:51

On your hair ? As well as the other obvious places. Floral street perfumes seem to last a long time

tobee · 20/02/2023 23:54

Now I can't stop thinking of that Fabreze have you gone nose blind advert!

RiverSkater · 21/02/2023 01:03

Spray a cloud of it and walk through it!

I love the waft of a perfume too!

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 21/02/2023 02:36

I always compliment people on their perfumes. I just simply love perfume. A teacher I had used to leave a trail behind when he walked in the corridors and everyone knew he was close by.

Now for your question:

  • Darker skin tones tend to retain fragrance better.
  • Using a matching set (body wash, body lotion, deodorant…) help mantain your fragrance for longer. If you don’t have a matching toiletry, vaseline will absorb the perfume and you will be able to enjoy for longer.
  • Your nose is only able to smell the fragrance you wear for around 20min. After this time you no longer perceive it but other people will.
  • Apply to areas that have pulse, as they beat and warm up the smell will disperse longer (wrist, back of the knees and arms, neck…).
  • Spray in the air and walk underneath so that it sticks to your hair. When your hair moves it will release the fragrance. A good idea is to have the hair mist of the matching fragrance. Do not over do it as alcohol will dry out hair.
  • Absolue and essence are the most concentrated versions. Parfum and eau the parfum are the most available. Eau de toilette is the most common and eau fraiche and cologne are the least intense and evaporate quicker.
  • woods and musks last longer. Citrus notes are the first ones to disappear and florals and fruits have medium longevity. Choose wisely.
  • If all the above fails, respray to your heart content.

I’d rather smell perfume than stinky armpits

Ruthy45 · 21/02/2023 02:45

I love Jean paul Gaultier la belle and the intense version. Worth trying both. Such a sexy scent! I can't smell it on myself anymore but others always mention it.

Layering helps, I get comments about how I smell nice

So if I'm wearing a vanilla based perfume I would usually have
Showered with a plain bar soap followed by a vanilla/cocoa butter type shower gel and a similar body scrub
Moisturised with a vanilla lotion
Perfume

I often read things like this and wonder if I'm doing life wrong.

Soap, shower gel and body scrub? I'd only use one of those! Is it normal/ correct to use all 3?

Thank you! I realise that i don’t really know much about the types of perfumes. You’ve given me stuff to google 😀

I only use one too. Normally soap! But post Christmas I have some lovely body washes and scrubs that I’m slowly getting through 😀

@MillicentTrilbyHiggins I use soap under my armpits, under boobs, sweaty bits Grinand for my feet, then shower gel everywhere else
Body scrub not every day but 3 times a week probably

Northlights22 · 19/02/2023 21:57

Yep only on MN would you get such misery inducing responses with regards to something as innocuous as perfume.
god some people are miserable

I expect you'd be miserable too if being stuck next to someone wearing strong perfume meant an almost guaranteed migraine.

QueefQueen80s · 21/02/2023 09:13

I love perfume clouds and wish I had one! 😆

Rapunzel22 · 21/02/2023 09:34

God, that stuff is hideous and I say that as someone who loves perfume!

You're probably nose blind OP but you could try a spray on your hair brush then brush your hair.
