How do you make perfume stick?

Gwdihooooo · 19/02/2023 09:26

What do you spray it on to?

if I’m wearing a scarf I’ll spray it on to that. If not I’ll spray it on to my top layer of clothing.

But I never feel like I have that waft of smell I get when I walk past others in public… If you know what I mean?

Where has the best sticking power? Is it directly on to the skin?

The point of wearing perfume is to smell nice/appealing and for others to smell you, surely you must have heard of this?

Except most perfumes don't appeal to most people. Being stuck in a lift/bus/office with someone who drowns themselves in perfume is awful

Can’t remember the last time i was in a lift/bus/office/enclosed space. Is more when I’m out on a walk and instead of smelling sweaty walkers it’s nice to smell perfume

I’m another who dislikes other people’s perfume clouds. Just because you can no longer smell it doesn’t mean others can’t. I never think ‘what a lovely smell’. I always think ‘they are wearing too much perfume/aftershave - yuck!’

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/02/2023 18:17

I love to get a quick blast of someone's perfume as they pass.

theatrical · 19/02/2023 18:31

Spraying it on clothing as you're already doing and reapplying is all I can think of.

I too love the waft of perfume as I walk past someone, even if it's not to my taste.

Wishimaywishimight · 19/02/2023 18:40

I get many (positive!) comments when I wear matching perfume and body lotion, seems to be the only way to make the scent last/linger.

tigger1001 · 19/02/2023 18:55

Lots of perfume on someone can make me wheeze (asthma). A hint of perfume when walking past someone is one thing, but clouds of the stuff isn't nice.

You've probably just gone noseblind.

I don't enjoy other people's perfume clouds by the way

I agree with this. Most people who wear perfume smell much stronger than they think they do.

Emmamoo89 · 19/02/2023 19:34

I always put it on my neck and wrists. Love smelling people's perfume x

elm26 · 19/02/2023 19:39

Only on Mumsnet could a thread about perfume staying power spark a negative reaction, Jesus 🥴

Op, use the matching body lotion. I also don't like "cheap" perfume, I don't mean that in a snobby way I mean as in it doesn't last long on my skin so I'd rather get a bottle of Chanel Mademoiselle once a year and it last me as I only need a couple of sprays.

X

Rebellious23 · 19/02/2023 19:39

Layering helps, I get comments about how I smell nice

So if I'm wearing a vanilla based perfume I would usually have
Showered with a plain bar soap followed by a vanilla/cocoa butter type shower gel and a similar body scrub
Moisturised with a vanilla lotion
Perfume

I find the only way to do it is to reapply throughout the day. Or, find a men’s aftershave that you like. DH has about half a dozen he rotates and without exception, the scent lasts until the next day. Plus the price per ml is much cheaper than women’s fragrances 🙄

elm26 · 19/02/2023 19:41

@Wednesdaysotherchild I'm really sorry for your losses, I've had 13 miscarriages, I know how painful it is and I mean this in the most gentle way but you'll drive yourself insane if you think that a waft of somebody's perfume is going to do you hard. Wishing you all the best x

Yep only on MN would you get such misery inducing responses with regards to something as innocuous as perfume.
god some people are miserable

Starryskiesinthesky · 19/02/2023 22:05

I would love to be someone who smells of perfume so that you get a waft of it as you walk by. I think it doesn’t last on me and people I know agree. Sadly!

flabbygoldfish · 19/02/2023 22:09

I spray a bit of perfume onto my hair plus clothes. Not sure it works on my skin. I think it helps with the general wafting of nice smells.

CornedBeef451 · 19/02/2023 22:12

Please don't do this. Perfume should be a subtle smell for people who get close to you, no wafting as you walk past.

mintich · 19/02/2023 22:20

Make sure your skin is well moisturised as this makes perfume stick.
Also try layering with other products, matching body lotion, hair mists etc

HeadsShouldersKneesAndMyGreatAuntsWalkingStick · 19/02/2023 22:26

😅at some of these anti-perfume comments 🙄

I vote in favour of a (subtle) scent.

Never heard of the Vaseline trick. Might try that one tomorrow.

Gwdihooooo · 19/02/2023 22:36

Thanks to those who have stuck to the brief… many things to try 😀

Also, if try different places to apply, please let behind the knees, back of the neck. I put some on the hair but the alcohol in perfume can damage hair too in long term, but so be mindful of that.

No.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 20/02/2023 08:20

They say not to spray on the wrist and then rub the two together as it destroys the 'notes' but if I spray on each wrist it makes no difference at all !
I say carry a small handbag size and reapply at will
I adore Chanel No 5 but it does not stay on me. Even when I reapply. I spray a little onto a tissue and put that up my sleeve and that seems to work for me

Sadlifter · 20/02/2023 08:22

I love smelling other people's perfumes! Some miserable people on this thread. I swear the negativity on mumsnet just gets worse and worse.
