Shower and ‘get ready’ - personal best 43 mins

Coffeepot72 · 18/02/2023 11:24

I expect lots of posters can achieve twice the results in half the time. I have struggled with this for years and getting ready from scratch just feels like a mountain to climb, but I don’t look or feel like me unless I do it.

A shower/hair wash then moisturiser, let moisturiser sink in then light make up (mainly to conceal dark circles, a bit of eye definition, then loose powder and blusher), shoulder length straight-ish hair that I blast with hairdryer then finish off with Revlon One Step. Then get dressed.

Do I have unrealistic expectations, or does everyone else spend a similar amount of time? I have experimented with washing my hair at night, rather than in the morning; this is ok-ish but not ideal.

I rarely wear make up and I don't wash my hair every days, so on an average going to work day, a quick shower and get ready (without hair wash) would prob be about 15 minutes. With hairwash probably 25 min.
I didn't realise until I joined MN that going out with wet hair was a bad thing. That it might infer that I have a chaotic homelife or MH issues....
If I see someone with wet hair I would think they had either been swimming/exercising, or just hadn't had time to dry their hair (like me!)

bussteward · 18/02/2023 13:25

@Fizbosshoes And then when you’re leaving: begins the hour-long poo accompanied by his phone. I swear I get out of the house quicker with a toddler and newborn than I do with a grown man.

SgtCawood · 18/02/2023 13:26

Came here to say “yes that sounds about right” but 45 minutes is for getting up and out of the house! Can do it in 30 if not washing hair.
Quick shower, teeth, dressed, concealer/mascara, feed cat, put packed lunch in bag, leave.

Crostimosti · 18/02/2023 13:42

I could be up and out in less than 15 mins most days as I put clothes out the night before, quick face wash, teeth clean and hairbrush/style. I always ate breakfast at work not home when I was working. If I'm doing make up, add 10 mins.

I always have a bath or shower in the evening and wash my hair then too. It takes ages to dry and looks awful if I don't leave it for a night before styling it- it goes so flat!

MajorCarolDanvers · 18/02/2023 13:43

I'm about 20 mins and that includes straightening hair.

But I don't wear make up.

musingsinmidlife · 18/02/2023 13:56

10 minutes to shower and wash my hair (15 if I am also shaving or am not in a rush), then 5 -7 minutes to blow dry my hair. I can shower, wash my hair and partially dry it in 10 minutes if I am running really late. Then throw clothes on, moisturizing takes 30 seconds.

So with showering and drying my hair - I need about 20 minutes. If I am not showering, then I can be out the door in 5 if I need to be. Usually if not showering in the morning, I get up 20 minutes before I need to leave as that gives me time for a tea. If showering, I get up 30 minutes before I need to leave to have time for my tea.

Goldpanther · 18/02/2023 14:04

20 mins tops. Waist length hair, don't shave everyday

Shower + wash my hair 5mins?
towel dry hair thoroughly 5 mins
Moisturiser, BB cream and light powder, I don't do any other make up 3mins?
get dressed is 2 mins tops
Hair dry hair a bit more (always leave it slightly damp) brush teeth etc is another 5mins

I find having less products helps, as well as a capsule wardrobe and roughly knowing what you are going to wear. That preplanning takes time, but is worth it.

if I am going out out, I might also curl my hair and apply some eye makeup

Codlingmoths · 18/02/2023 14:05

Oh gosh I need to change my life. Me: an hour. I shower the night before. So mornings are cup of tea and wake up: 15mins. 30 mins teeth hair contact lenses moisturiser makeup. 15 mins find something to wear and get my bags together, pack a snack etc. I don’t even make the bed. And once dp finishes parental leave I’m just going to have to get up earlier, do makeup in the car, and pack all my things and choose clothes the night before (tricky now as baby still in our room). I’m looking at leave in contacts to save 10 mins, I can’t put them in first thing in the morning, I need awake eyes or it stings. And I have to put them in before moisturiser and make up.

Yarrawonga · 18/02/2023 14:07

I’ve never timed it but probably around fifteen minutes. It doesn’t take me long because I don’t do much.

Poblano · 18/02/2023 14:17

Usually 30 minutes, but I can do it in 20 if pushed. This includes shower, hair wash and make up.

But:
I have short hair so it doesn't take long to wash, dry and style
I lay all my clothes out the night before.
I multitask - so dry my hair while my moisturiser sinks in, put my make up on while the coffee brews etc.
I don't wear loads of makeup (light foundation, eyebrow gel, mascara, blusher and a slick of lip balm usually)

OldTinHat · 18/02/2023 14:18

40 mins personal best, all of the above OP but my hair is long and curly and a faff!

UsingChangeofName · 18/02/2023 14:20

Are we talking about going to work / going about your normal day, or going "out, out" ?

If I am going somewhere nice for the evening, or off to a wedding or something, I quite enjoy the preparation - and I might be trying out different outfits as I don't get 'dressed up' that often now.

However, if we are talking about going out to work, or whatever a normal day offers, then that is very different.

I have short hair which I just leave to dry.
I only need to wash it about twice a week and that only takes about 4 mins.
I don't wear make up very often at all.
A shower would generally take less than 6 mins including drying.
I don't generally need to do any 'body maintenance' before going out to work - in terms of the OP talking about "the minimum time" I tend to set aside time once a week for stuff that might take longer.
I dress relatively casually most of the time / don't need to be taking time to think about what to wear.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 18/02/2023 14:22

I work from home and roll out of bed at 8.50, straight in the shower and at my desk by 9.

I am a bloke though.

UserNameSameGame · 18/02/2023 15:34

OP as you posted in S&B I was assuming you meant minimum time to a relatively “done” look? Something where you look groomed or at least like you have made an effort?

Otherwise yes I concede I could be ready even quicker.

Fairislefandango · 18/02/2023 15:42

45 mins from getting out of bed to leaving the house. 25 mins of that is me getting ready. The rest is feeding pets, getting work stuff together, having breakfast etc.

I shower, wash (short) hair, get dressed, do make-up, blow-dry hair. I only condition my hair once a week at the weekend and don't use body moisturiser.

Coffeepot72 · 18/02/2023 18:09

Yep, groomed enough for an office day/meet a friend/go shopping

I am 47, am rubbish at making an effort and work outside walking dogs all day.

I have long hair but wash it most mornings. I shower, wash hair, clean teeth, apply deodorant and spf, get dressed and be out of the door in 12 minutes. 5 of that minutes is rinsing and brushing my hair which then goes into a quick plait whilst wet.

Very quick and not very glamorous.

Aphrathestorm · 18/02/2023 18:17

I take 3 hours from dry and dirty to dry and done up.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/02/2023 19:04

Before I had dc I used to be able to do bed to desk in under an hour, and 35 mins was driving to work. 20 years later I can still do it if needed, but I prefer half an hour for a mug or 2 of tea to get me going. I have short hair and have never worn make up work though.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/02/2023 19:13

Bout 15 mins if I shower and wash hair.

Shower, hair in towel, moisturiser, teeth, deodorant, dress, hair out of towl, scrag it upside down with some product (curly and short) and jump in the car. Turn the aircon temp up high and fan on full and hair's dry by the time I get wherever I'm going. I never use a hairdryer it just turns me into a fluff ball. Might slap some foundation, blush and mascara on, but usually only if I'm going somewhere fancy.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/02/2023 19:14

Sorry, meant to add I don't wear makeup to the office.

GoodbyeMrChips · 18/02/2023 19:15

Blimey! I am a total scruff! I tend to shower in the day at home after a workout. I WFH. So morning routine - teeth, wash face, moisturiser, deodorant, brush hair and bung in a ponytail and dress ( usually from PJs to lounge wear)…10 mins if that!

goodmorningsunny · 18/02/2023 19:25

45 minutes to do my morning business, shower, clean bathroom, get dressed, blow dry hair and finish with revlon one step, brush teeth, deodorant, foundation, blush & mascara. Then maybe another 15/20 to eat, pack bag badger coat, shoes, keys, breast pump ready for work. Then off I go!

Fairislefandango · 18/02/2023 19:47

Yep, groomed enough for an office day/meet a friend/go shopping.

Different people have very different standards for those activities though.

Fairislefandango · 18/02/2023 19:48

I mean... why would you need to look particularly groomed to go shopping?
