Anybody rate Bobbi Brown makeup?

I'm in the market for some new makeup. I don't wear much and won't wear a lot. I am outdoors every day and in the rain sometimes too for quite a while. There's no point in anything much those days.

I have always fancied Bobbi Brown makeup but for some unknown reason I never bought any! Maybe I associated it as a product for women with older skin. Don't know why! Now I'm going to basically start from scratch with makeup, I'm thinking of the brand. My skin has large pores, is white and thin so basically red and blue with some pink, and I'm in perimenopause. My main goal is to have light makeup that can even out all the skin colours when I want to. I do not like the feeling of layers of makeup.

Would the Bobbi Brown counter be a good place for me, does it really not matter, or any other recommendations?

Yes! Their cream blush is fabulous!

PrairieDawn101 · 18/02/2023 05:25

I do love BB makeup but try to avoid it as it is not cruelty free. What other options do have nearby? I like the Fenty Beauty and Anastasia Beverly Hills brands as a similar genre.

SecretVictoria · 18/02/2023 05:56

Their foundations are always on the yellow side. I used to love their eye makeup, especially the pots of cream eyeshadow and gel liners. Unfortunately, the eyeshadow is now in a stick, which IMO, does not have the same quality/staying power/colour range and the liner is now only available in black. You could go to a counter and get them to try some on you.

So1invictus · 18/02/2023 06:00

I would watch some BB reels on Instagram first and then decide, because if you go to a counter (and they are truly lovely) you'll feel bamboozled into buying everything.

I like some products, the eye make up sticks are great (if spendy) but I hated with a passion the £50 foundation I bought (it's the serum one so has that slimy texture I realise is what I hate)

You'll also see from the reels that since Bobbi Brown herself parted company with them, they very much cater for younger people and very much do not go in for the light make up look!

(I'm the same colour as you, and recent bases I've loved have been Erborian BB in clair, Hydraluminous in Calico and Clinique Even Better Refresh in WN01. I'm currently waiting on a delivery of Estée Lauder futurist hydra or something in 1C1 which is the perfect colour for me. All 3 just really do the my skin but better thing and are buildable, though you don't really need to build with the Erborian. )

50but17inside · 18/02/2023 06:08

I came on to say I love Bobbi brown and suggest you watch the old Hannah Martin video on YouTube from when she was with the brand showing her favourite ever products. But my favourite base now is Erborian Super BB cream - as @So1invictus has mentioned above

So1invictus · 18/02/2023 06:27

@50but17inside I resisted the hype for so long then bought a tiny sample- even that lasted me a month! It's fabulous.

daretodenim · 18/02/2023 06:37

Oh thanks!

Am totally up for being bamboozled at the makeup counter, but not the bit where I get home and realise I hate what I just bought! 😂

Another vote for Eborian BB cream, it’s exactly what you want. You can buy small versions of it on Amazon.

LostidentityM · 18/02/2023 07:01

I really love their liquid concealer. I had been put off by the foundation stick which had dried out for me but they tried this on me and a friend for her wedding makeup look and it gave a perfect fresh look.

I used to love bb but as I don't know if it's me getting older or them discontinuing everything I liked but most things I try I don't get on with. I loved their brow shaper but I think theyve stopped it now. Foundations all seem wrong in terms of texture, I've switched to Armani now. I still use some of their powders but generally very little of theirs.

Thingamebobwotsit · 18/02/2023 07:08

I loved Bobbi Brown for years and my basic makeup kit was almost exclusively their products, but they have stopped doing a lot of my favourite lightweight products and replaced them with a lot more claggy products that make you look like you have makeup on. Also i have never got on with their mascara... so I do think it helps to be a little choosy.

Am experimenting with NARS at the moment. And Boots No7 is consistently good and a lot less pricey - Might also be worth a look.

Also ... mascara... got given free sample of Rimmel having spent a fortune over the years on expensive ones (I am allergic to a lot of them). Game changer. Brilliant stuff!

I didn't know this about Bb having parted company with the brand!

My usual foundation was discontinued or changed (Skin) so I bought the one you describe. The colour is not the same and I'm not sure about the texture either.

PoloMintPatty · 18/02/2023 07:43

@Thingamebobwotsit what Rimmel mascara is it? I've been using a Bobbi Brown Smokey eye one but not loving it.

I agree about the lightweight foundations. I'm going to check out the BB cream mentioned above and I've been considering a Chanel lightweight one. It's the colour match that I struggle with

daretodenim · 18/02/2023 08:10

I've just ordered the Erborian BB cream. Will see how that goes.

If it doesn't work for me I'll be back for more recommendations!

I really like Clinique foundations.
You can get free samples of these from the make up counters, with a few days worth of usage to see how you get on with it.

So1invictus · 18/02/2023 09:39

@PoloMintPatty her company now is Jones Road which from reels I've watched seems to have much more of the old Bobbi Brown ethic, less is more, some models in their 60s etc. I think it's been a few years since she's not been associated with Bobbi Brown.

Thanks for this. Totally missed this info!

Smallinthesmoke · 18/02/2023 10:36

Bobbi Brown will give you a week's sample of foundation if you ask nicely. Agree with other posters that the serum foundation has a weird slimy texture, so I would swerve that.
I rate the lipsticks, eyeshadow sticks and the highlighter powder. Still completely baffled by why they only do mascara in black.
Until the end of Feb you can get £10 off a £70 spend at John Lewis. So I would book a free makeover slot at a quiet time, then see if you like what they are trying to flog you.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/02/2023 10:40

It is good. They also do very good counter makeovers.

Laura Mercier also good

DysonBison · 18/02/2023 10:41

Has anyone tried the Jones Road WT Foundation? The FB/IG promotional reels make it look amazing but comments below are less fulsome.

Polarbearyfairy · 18/02/2023 10:53

I love Bobbi brown makeup, recommend going to the counter. Just pick the products you want at the end, you don't have to buy everything. I'd say their skin products are work it (foundation, concealer, under eye corrector) but you can get just as good a lot cheaper for eye and cheek products.

FordCreek · 18/02/2023 11:26

It was great when it first came out. I tried their eye shadow stick recently and am not impressed. It’s way too glittery and doesn’t have the texture or quality I expected for the price. Plus it broke off in the tube really quickly so I have to push it up with care now.

I agree. I really want to, then I read the comments saying it's a bit rubbish! I do like BB herself, I'll probably give it a punt sooner or later and then whinge!
