How to make curls stay put ?

I've recently learned how to curl my hair with straighteners (well more of a wave than a curl). Only problem is that the curls/waves don't last and just looks straggly but the end of the evening. A friend suggested hairspray before using the straighteners, and again after but that looked really dull. (I had previously tried just using hairspray after I'd curled but no joy). Can anyone suggest good products or types of products that might help? I have a below chin bob so it's not super long and heavy.
Thank you

I use a sea salt spray on damp hair and it seems to make them last okay.

Thank you @Basilandparsleyandmint - any particular brand?

Hold the curl until the hair cools. Warm hair is still "setting". It needs to be cool before it will keep it's shape.

I use curling pins when I'm doing my own. Curl one section, pin. Curl second section, pin. By the time you've reached the end the first curl is cooled. You can always blast with a cold blast from the blowdryer for a few seconds, just in case.

When I'm doing someone else's hair I normally just catch the curl as it comes off the flat iron and hold it in my hand for a few seconds.

I use Mark Hill Curl Spray but it seems to be out of stock in Boots at the moment.

For me the best thing for long lasting waves is a really good pair of straighteners- I had been getting disappointing results with my previous straighteners, but since switching to Cloud 9's my waves look shinier and hold longer. Also it's better if you don't curl the same day as you wash.

old fashioned setting spray. the type used on older ladies' blowdry and set.

What straighteners are you using? Mine last for days with no styling products. I wouldn’t advise using straighteners on damp hair you’ll just scorch your hair and damage it

Possibly @AlexandraJJ - but the same happened when my hairdresser did them for a night out and they use GHDs. I did. mention this to my hairdresser the next visit who said it's probably just my hair. Hence not asking her which products to use !
