Is the good wool coat back?

Last time I mentioned my "good" coat on here I was torn to shreds 😆

Yesterday I travelled through London. All the beautiful young women were wearing wide leg trousers or jeans (sometimes ripped) trainers and a long wool coat. Worn open, which defeats the object of a coat, but we'll overlook that for now.

It did seem to automatically make them more polished. Not something I'd have worn with ripped jeans and trainers back in the day, but if I drag my old Jaeguar (sp?) coat out and throw it on over whatever, will I suddenly become on trend?!

i have noticed a kind of small checked look is in in the long wool coat department.
it is a look you can wear October / November/ Feb / March at most as rest of year is too hot / too cold!

LaurieFairyCake · 16/02/2023 14:39

I only ever wear a 'good wool coat' - I don't own any puffas or down coats

I'm now going to make you all jealous of my 100% cashmere camel coat lined in caramel silk - brand NEW Aquascutum - probably cost about £1000

Got it for £20 off EBay ShockShockShock- had it shortened to fit one inch below knee and the sleeves shortened and tailored for £45

Best bargain EVER - have worn it every day for last 2 months

Lentilweaver · 16/02/2023 14:57

I am definitely jealous @LaurieFairyCake. What a bargain! But I am also standing in the rain this very minute in my trusty puffer. :)

hettiethehare · 16/02/2023 15:01

I've been thinking recently that I need a dark classic wool coat. I know exactly the look you mean, and I really like it.

The tragic thing is I used to own a Max Mara camel wool coat that I adored - I got it in the sale in City HOF and it wasn't that expensive (£210 I remember about 15 years ago - so not cheap but not out of reach either). Unfortunately, the moths clearly liked it just as much as I did and I had to chuck it.

StridTheKiller · 16/02/2023 16:59

Get on Ebay there's loads.

LoobyDop · 16/02/2023 19:46

You can dress a wool coat down with trainers or biker boots. You can’t dress a puffer up, whatever you do with it.

Hartlebury · 16/02/2023 20:00

I found a vintage 80% cashmere 20% wool forest green 'good coat' with nice slightly quirky details for a tenner in a charity shop and it's my find of 2022.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/02/2023 07:56

Ooh, good point @LoobyDop
Maybe this is partly why I don't own a puffer, the lack of versatility would annoy.

Lentilweaver · 27/02/2023 09:51

I scored a bargain yesterday in a charity shop. Jigsaw pure wool and cashmere coat, incredibly soft, for £30.Very pleased with it. Now to actually wear it and not reach for my practical waterproof puffer.

TheDead · 27/02/2023 10:08

I'm far more naturally drawn to wool coats and have many of them in my wardrobe, some of them are 15+ years old.

I also have a Helly Hansen fully waterproof jacket for walking on wet days, bought a couple of years ago and looked after so I anticipate having it for years to come.

This year I bought a COS duck down filled puffa jacket, the first I have jad in many years as I have quite a bit of travel to cold cities this spring, places like Berlin, Prague etc so it is a practical thing to have a suitable jacket for this and again I anticipate it will last me years.

I think it's important to have the right coat for the right conditions if possible, nothing beats a beautiful wool coat for me!

I had a lovely Armani diffusion wool coat which I bought for 300 quid in the sale in the City HOF, which I wore the hell out of for years until it lost its shape. I miss that shop so much.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/02/2023 10:21

Wearing coats open is pretty normal IMO, you get too hot with them done up apart from on the very coldest days

l never get too hot in them. I won’t buy one that fastens in a V either. The cold sneaks in. Fully buttoned up to the neck.

DeoForty · 27/02/2023 10:26

Vinted and Charity Shops for wool coats. I got a navy cashmere mid length coat for £10 in a CS a few weeks back.

Badger1970 · 27/02/2023 10:38

I've got a 15 year old Jaeger one that is perfect for this time of year. I got one last winter from White Stuff and it is horrendous for bobbling, I spend more time defluffing it than I do wearing it so it's been condemned to the charity shop bag.

DD has got a few Ted Baker ones and they've worn pretty well.

MistySkiesAreGone · 27/02/2023 12:51

I've had good ones from New Look and Oasis! You probably could not tell they were not wool. But I like the weight and quality lining of a good coat and am looking for one. I can't decide on the car coat style, something with more of a larger collar or a wrap coat. I think I want all three so there may be some Vinted action to find them.

UglyModernWindows · 27/02/2023 13:21

I have a Hugo Boss wool coat, bought it in 2006 and it’s still going strong. It’s in dark chocolate colour, finishes just above knee, has sharp shoulders and perfect length sleeves. It doesn’t look dated at all and goes with almost any outfit or type of jeans. I’m hugely paranoid though that the dry cleaners may accidentally ruin it one day 🤯.

On another note, I loved the City HoF too!! So sad it’s no more. When it first opened, I used to work right next door to it. Many a lunch time was spent mooching there.

BHRK · 27/02/2023 17:57

Wool coats never went away! I have lovely wool coats in black, navy and cobalt. They last years. Cost lots at the outset but a worthy investment

ImAvingOops · 28/02/2023 09:24

This thread has just made me order a wool coat in the John Lewis sale Smile

Whatthediddlyfeck · 28/02/2023 09:28

I have all my late mum’s good coats, amd I mean seriously good, and am desperate to wear them now that I’ve lost weight so I can! Some of them will be 30+ years old. My dd is wearing my mum’s 1960s Aquascutum and looks amazing in it

TizerorFizz · 28/02/2023 09:44

I have loads of wool coats. Always wear a selection of them. Ditto puffers. Each have their uses! I like my Toast tweedy ones.

DD who is London based always has a wool coat on the go. Latest is A line dark beige. Possibly Joseph but I didn’t ask! Yes to wider trousers and either trainers or chunky loafers. Add a chunky knit and it’s an easy look to pull off I think.

Calphurnia88 · 28/02/2023 09:48

I don't think wool coats ever went out, did they?

Good is subjective though, and there are lots of styles, fits, colours and finishes available.

Cam22 · 28/02/2023 11:29

I have lots of “good” coats - many from Cos - and I love the open coat look. It’s a great look.

SqueakyDinosaur · 19/04/2023 19:28

Another wool coat diehard here. I'm steeling myself to bin my gloriously soft Jaeger cashmere coat (still the most expensive single item I've ever bought, even in the sale) because after c.15 years there are actual holes in the sleeves, from wear rather than moths.

minipie · 19/04/2023 19:31

I need a wool coat! I used to live in mine pre-kids, then realised they weren’t compatible with having to go out in all weathers and not having a free hand for a brolly. Finally the DC are older and I’d like to go back to something more flattering than the obligatory mum puffer coat.

DianasTeacup · 19/04/2023 19:31

I've just bought a vintage wool coat on Vinted and am wondering how to freshen it up. How do you all refresh your wool coats?
