Black Tie Terror

I have the option to go to a black tie event and I haven't really dressed up since the 90s.
I can't stand wearing heels any more and I look enormous in any kind of dress mostly owing to having let myself go as they used to say.
How do you dress for black tie under such conditions, it's enough to make me not want to go at all but I think I need to face to challenge one day

Actually I find that black tie events are better for wearing flats than other, slightly less formal events as the dresses are full length and so the flat shoes can be hidden away. Plus I think a lot of people feel the same re heels these days so there’s some really lovely posh flats out there.
Dresses can be a little trickier as it’s hard to know what best suits when you don’t often wear black tie attire, but order lots with the mind to send back lots would be my advice. It’s so annoying that physical shops are getting more and more scarce as trying on in store would be ideal, but I suppose you do get the comfort of your own home now… and no changing room lighting!!

I am absolutely longing for an incontrovertible reason to give myself this:

Or this:

Things might have changed since the last time you stepped out, OP; the important thing is to find something that flatters you and looks celebratory. It doesn’t have to be a floor length frock.

Thank you so much. I would love a smart suit if that is acceptable for black tie?

I've always loved Hobbs and Jigsaw

Look at Phase Eight evening wear dresses too. I am overweight and have a bit of tummy and the dresses really flattered me. I ordered four dresses to try for a black tie event and ended up keeping two.

I went to a black tie event recently and a lady wore suits, a guy had a yellow bow tie and another one showed up in a bright blue shirt with linen white trousers. For my part I had a jumpsuit from Whistle, and block heels. I think the standard has loosen up a lot after Covid.

Two wondrously retro evening dresses, and another almost tuxedo jacket:

Aren’t they?

The dresses remind me of my mother in the 70’s, setting off with my father for some evening do.
