Jeans and a ‘nice top’

GoldenCagedBird · 14/02/2023 21:45

So short of ‘nice tops’

i have jeans of every shape, leather trousers and skirts- but my top half is a bit lacklustre. I went out to the pub earlier and felt like I dressed exactly the same as if I had popped to the supermarket.

I have either basic casual tops- wraparound, striped bretons, plain shirts and a few ‘going out tops’ which are pre covid and just aren’t my style any more.

Can anyone suggest a ‘nice top’ to go with mom jeans or flares? Anyone bought anything nice lately?

I wear vests or band t shirts with jeans under a blazer or a vest under a lace tunic with leather leggings or a fitted shirt

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/02/2023 07:11

It’s so hard to find anything. Everything is either very plain or flouncy with huge sleeves and dreadful fabrics.

Marks place…

There's a lot of disconnect on here, women posting Hobbs, John Lewis, fatface, are not paying attention to what OP is posting from ASOS. She's in her twenties didn't do the nineties the first time round and is looking at things that are reminiscent of 1997 select/new look.
Don't get me wrong I much prefer the items PPs are posting but I'm closer to 40 than 30 and don't want to dress like I did in my teens again.
OP the black long sleeve with the low neck and high cut sides with flared jeans are the kind of things I see younger colleagues wearing on a night out

pattihews · 15/02/2023 08:26

I've already acknowledged the age difference, no need for a telling off.

Interesting how vast a range the word 'nice' covers. Everything from a modest long-sleeved beige blouse that my mum would have worn in her 70s to a clingy see-through black mesh number!

Following!

Spottypaperdoll · 15/02/2023 08:40

I quite like Lindex for nice cheap tops, and if my money can stretch, Goodhood have a good selection of better quality stuff.

Margaret Howell do lovely tops but not always affordable for me

HerbalTeaAndCake · 15/02/2023 08:47

My problem is gigantic norks!
Any suggestions for tops to suit?

VanillaSox · 15/02/2023 08:48

Ooh thanks OP - same here -loads of great jeans etc but dearth of nice tops 😀

VanillaSox · 15/02/2023 08:51

And this whole look (if only I was a 20-something French beauty 😂)
www.sezane.com/en/product/carlotta-blouse/black#size-6

That is gorgeous in black. Will put it on my list of Xmas present options from DH, having a no spend 2 years other than Xmas/birthday presents from DH.

Sorry, OP, too old for you if you're in your 20s. But good for us over-40s.

'Us over 40's'

I wouldn't wear any of those.

Anyway 'Jeans and a nice top' is a rubbish plan.

It's an excuse, not an outfit.

Get a theme, an idea. Then build an outfit.

C'mon you're here so you obviously care a bit.

I really like the floral tops from fat face- something like this for the pub in the evening. But then I'm not a very dressy up person!

Ewwwww - you’re joking, aren’t you??

No, I would just like a couple of tops to wear with jeans or leather trousers which I don’t also wear to collect my Vinted parcels from Tesco or look after my DD in

You are completely right about me- but everyone should feel free to share their nice tops :)

Yes! Brilliant post and true S&B.

OP are you wedded to the jeans idea?

Flyinggeesei234 · 15/02/2023 09:38

Oops sorry OP. Cross post. It’s your thread, ignore me.

well yeah because I literally just want to buy a few nice tops as I have great denim of every shape, leather skirts of every length, leather trousers, cargos, chinos, slim fit trousers….

all that need to be worn with tops less I want to walk around with my leaky boobs out

Then what's the point?

I'm not being a dick.

But what is the point?

What's your end-game?

Why do you want to look better?

You either care or you don't. If you do, that's great, drill down and think about why. Then extrapolate.

You asked a question, why did you ask it?

I am honestly asking because I spend a lot of time thinking about clothes, so a 'tell me what top to wear' question makes me wonder why you're asking.

Because you do care.

And I'd like to help.

im sure you could go for something more fashionable than that!

I've had some lovely tops recently through stitch fix. (I also have £15 referral credit for anyone who wants to try it here www.stitchfix.co.uk/invite/y8295x2d93?sod=m&som=c)

I absolutely love my box, I've set it to every 3 months and I generally limit myself to 2-3 items otherwise I could spend a fortune.

These are the two "nice tops" I've had recently. I wear them a lot!

i think these look a bit cheap

Mumsnut · 15/02/2023 10:07

This has long troubled me. Most of the time I am sitting down when out, with only my top half visible above the table. So no matter how good my trousers o r edgy my shoes , they are irrelevant!
