Bastarding dry sore skin on eyelids - how to sooth and calm?

So for about 12 months now, having never had sensitive skin, my eyelids are taking it in turns to suddenly go a tiny bit dry then BAM overnight really puffed, sore and even drier. Occasionally it happens under my eye but I think certainly since November I’ve had sore eyes more often than not.

No allergies apart from hay fever which I’ve managed all my life.

In the early days I found after a few days they would settle then for a few days after a tiny bit of Skin Food helped them heal and moustused very gently.

Now anything I put on my eye lid sends it mad. I barely wear any make up and only occasionally a Decleor eye cream under eyes which touch wood that seems ok.

A few weeks ago after yet another flare up on my right eyeI saw a gp who diagnosed blephatitis and antibiotic cream shifted it.

I’ve since binned all eye makeup up just in case snd was happily wearing just mascara for work last week no problems and removing it/cleaning my eyes with Blephasol which certainly on one eye seems to have cleared it.

Yesterday this was my left eye (right on pic) I accidentally dabbed a tiny bit of eye cream on it Saturday night, idiot I am,

I don’t think it’s blephatitis again as it’s not originating from the lash line.

As I say I barely use any products now so can’t pinpoint any irritant there.

No skin irritation anywhere else even on my face.

Beautician hasn’t changed wax or brow tint either.

Any suggestions of how to calm and gently moisturise it without sending it to Defcon 1 every time?!

I know it’s vain but it’s really getting me down and my eyes have aged horribly. I started thyroxine and HRT shortly before symptoms started so wonder whether there’s a connection there.

I get this sometimes too. I use Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream Concentrated Unscented (the one with a red lid) on it when it's bad and that seems to help. I only use Clinique Dramatically Different moisturising lotion on my face day to day and don't seem to react to that.

vix3rd · 13/02/2023 15:47

I had something like this.

Turns out I'd become allergic to Fatty Alcohols - Stearyl Alcohol, Cetostearyl Alcohol, Myristal Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol.

It's used to thicken stuff so is in anything thick & moisturising. Hair conditioners, Mascara (not many), Moisturisers, suntan lotion, creams from the doctor. Although most make up is ok & it doesn't seem to be in the moisturising gels. (Revolution do a nice one)

Ask your GP to refer you for allergy panel testing.

Mouthfulofquiz · 13/02/2023 15:51

Hate to say it but I’d be popping a small amount of hydrocortisone onto it for a couple of days to get rid of the inflammation and then find a good moisturisers to keep on top of it. Maybe take antihistamines to keep on top of any allergies and some anti inflammatories. I’m not a medical professional but I have had this on my eyelids a couple of times.

vix3rd · 13/02/2023 16:20

Meant to say try Diprobase from the chemist. Only has 1 ingredient you can be allergic to so will help.

LadyLapsang · 13/02/2023 16:28

Moorfields eye hospital has a good information booklet online on dealing with blephritis. You need to clean your eyelids at least twice per day. You can also use heated wheat bags - put them in a clean pillowcase. You can buy OCuSOFT lid scrub plus on Amazon.

BadgerFace · 13/02/2023 16:40

Oh my goodness I have very similar and had been wondering what it was! It started last month and I eventually (after a couple of weeks trying all sorts of different moisturisers) used 1% hydrocortisone on it which cleared it up in 2 days. It has reappeared over the weekend and I wondered if it was a reaction to drinking alcohol on Friday or maybe a new hair conditioner (although that has not been near my eyelids).

I am mid 40's and have never had any skin problems before last year so have found it a bit of a mystery. Posh eye creams did not help. Aveeno helped a tiny bit. I've gone back to the Hydrocortisone today...

MaverickGooseGoose · 13/02/2023 16:42

The only thinks that sorts mine is a tiny bit of hydrocortisone for a couple of days.

Whatskillsgap · 13/02/2023 16:42

Aveeno works for my eye eczema. The skin is so thin and fragile

watchfulwishes · 13/02/2023 16:46

My DH was prescribed protopic for eczema that looked similar.

Coveredinivy · 13/02/2023 17:15

I've had this too and Hyurolic Acid serum made it go away

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/02/2023 17:24

I had similar although mainly under the eyes. A Boots pharmacist recommended simple eye ointment (that's the name of the product, nothing to do with the Simple brand, looked like a petroleum jelly type thingI think it is sold for use within the eye but it worked a treat. This was a long time ago now so can't say whether it is still available. Worth asking maybe?

Queenmargery · 13/02/2023 17:27

Bioderma Atorderm intensive Eye cream .
I had something very similar around my lower eyes for months.
The Bioderma sorted it out within days.

Thanks you lovely lot. I'm going to read theses replies and do some googling properly after tea 😊

I have this and the only thing that cleared it up was Lush's Dream Cream. It's amazing.

BowiesJumper · 13/02/2023 19:10

Yes the 1% hydrocortisone (I get the boots own brand over the counter one) is only thing that shifts mine when mine get like that.

I can feel them being irritated right now actually but it’s because I used a certain eye shadow today which they obviously don’t like!

Furball · 13/02/2023 19:24

I have this too. I don't use anything on my face that contains Sodium lauryl sulfate aka SLS an emulsifier (found in alot of high street liquidy type soaps as that is know to remove all oils)

But I just use the teenest smear of extra virgin olive oil and it seems to keep that at bay.

Furball · 13/02/2023 19:25

Forgot to say - I use skin food light on my face and even if I use that on my eyelids it flares up

DressDilemma · 13/02/2023 19:27

I had this after I started using a Vitamin C cleanser and my skin reacted. Hydrocortisone 1% cream helped reduce this. Then I used Dermalogica barrier repair cream. It took a couple of months before I could go back to skincare containing retinol and other reactive ingredients.

Galadriel90 · 13/02/2023 20:14

I have this exact thing! Mine flares up in the cold weather or when I'm stressed. Bit of hydrocortisone cream is the only thing that helps for me.

schnubbins · 13/02/2023 20:19

Bepanthen or Panthenol cream from your pharmacy .It's non irritating and doesn't burn .I use it on any sore spots .

Bewildermum · 13/02/2023 20:29

My sympathies OP, it's a horrible thing to deal with. I highly recommend Ucerin Aquaphor Balm (which was shared by another lovely Mumsnetter) - I occasionally get hideous eczema flare ups around my eyes (making my face all swollen and making me reluctant to leave the house!), but since using this regularly I've not had a problem, it's fabulous.... (I also use emollient cream instead of makeup remover to remove eye makeup, and started using tubing mascara as it seems to be less irritating). Good luck!

FlyMeToDunoon · 13/02/2023 20:39

I had this! Thought it was blepharitis but didn't quite fit. Then decided it was eczema. Dr prescribed a very mild steroid cream which cleared it up and recommended cetraben which keeps my eyelids moisturised without irritating them.
My eyelids can get tight, dry and itchy if I forget to use it

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/02/2023 20:45

Wow. So many things to consider!

I'm a bit scared to use hydrocortisone as I've heard it can accelerate the ageing look and I already look 10 years older Confused however accept I may need to give it a go.

Right ... plan is I may try the Eucerin balm first as it seems to help minimise the irritation and help skin calm too. I'm going to read back at everyone's replies and really pay attention to common ingredients that seem to trigger it. Likely to consider the steroid cream option if I need the Big Guns later.

I'll stick with the Blephasol as my other eye hasn't look this nearly normal in a loooong time.

Thanks so much again everyone for taking time to reply. I really appreciate it x

See I'm not convinced that this is either. Interesting!

I do however now know I've been spelling it wrong Grin
