Bastarding dry sore skin on eyelids - how to sooth and calm?

So for about 12 months now, having never had sensitive skin, my eyelids are taking it in turns to suddenly go a tiny bit dry then BAM overnight really puffed, sore and even drier. Occasionally it happens under my eye but I think certainly since November I’ve had sore eyes more often than not.

No allergies apart from hay fever which I’ve managed all my life.

In the early days I found after a few days they would settle then for a few days after a tiny bit of Skin Food helped them heal and moustused very gently.

Now anything I put on my eye lid sends it mad. I barely wear any make up and only occasionally a Decleor eye cream under eyes which touch wood that seems ok.

A few weeks ago after yet another flare up on my right eyeI saw a gp who diagnosed blephatitis and antibiotic cream shifted it.

I’ve since binned all eye makeup up just in case snd was happily wearing just mascara for work last week no problems and removing it/cleaning my eyes with Blephasol which certainly on one eye seems to have cleared it.

Yesterday this was my left eye (right on pic) I accidentally dabbed a tiny bit of eye cream on it Saturday night, idiot I am,

I don’t think it’s blephatitis again as it’s not originating from the lash line.

As I say I barely use any products now so can’t pinpoint any irritant there.

No skin irritation anywhere else even on my face.

Beautician hasn’t changed wax or brow tint either.

Any suggestions of how to calm and gently moisturise it without sending it to Defcon 1 every time?!

I know it’s vain but it’s really getting me down and my eyes have aged horribly. I started thyroxine and HRT shortly before symptoms started so wonder whether there’s a connection there.

My current solution is a cica balm (there are lots) followed by an fine occulsive ointment. I used 50/Fifty last night and it worked pretty well. But you need to have spent a lot of time in dermatology clinics to learn which creams work for you. My skin hates liquid parafin, which is the default suggestion from most pharmacists. I have no allergies, fully tested and screened. I like best Balneum Plus which has an anti-itch component that worked for me.

Not rtft but after incredibly sore bleeding dermatitis my go prescribed me hydrocortisone... don't use!! My eyelids are so thin from the steroids. It turned out it was SLS allergy

Askingforafriendly · 13/02/2023 21:10

I’ve had this periodically for years. It’s so annoying.

I use hydrocortisone cream on it- just don’t tell the pharmacist that’s it’s for your eyes or face as they won’t sell it you- you have to say it’s for arms or somewhere on body and that you have used it before.

Just be extra careful not to get it in your eyes so no rubbing etc for a few hours after it’s gone on and don’t use it at bedtime.

Gp prescribed erroneously! To the poster after me - pharmacist won't prescribe for eyes because it's not suitable for use on eyelids!!

Do you get gel nails?

No but have read an ingredient in polish can be a trigger. Sadly had bare nails since before Christmas z

Hate to say it but I’d be popping a small amount of hydrocortisone onto it for a couple of days to get rid of the inflammation and then find a good moisturisers to keep on top of it. Maybe take antihistamines to keep on top of any allergies and some anti inflammatories. I’m not a medical professional but I have had this on my eyelids a couple of times.

I do the same after the GP told me to.

blitzen · 13/02/2023 21:24

Could it be periocular dermatitis? Might be worth joining the perioral dermatitis support group on Facebook and asking. But you'd need to avoid steroids like the plague if so.

Derbybound2022 · 13/02/2023 21:26

I saw an eye consultant for it and got prescribed doxycycline 50mg one daily for three weeks. Also I have to apply maxitrol ointment to my eyelids for three weeks.

I'm currently suffering with it , fourth bout in just over a year as I bought a new eye pencil. I don't dare wear eye cream in case I react like last time I had a flare up.

I was wondering what the allergen is I need to avoid? How do they diagnose?

Derbybound2022 · 13/02/2023 21:26

Was told it's blepharitis btw as my eyelid swelled. I have rosacea and eczema too

tentinginmarch · 13/02/2023 21:31

Agree with all the above - I have similar. Any simple straight forward moisturiser (even Vaseline!) will sort you out. BUT prevention is better than cure. It's so much easier to prevent this than fix it, so once it's better, maybe daily / every other day depending on what you need, just a gentle moisturiser - perhaps when you've showered or go to bed - honestly keeping this at bay is so much better. ☺️

I developed an awful reaction on my eyes. Turns out niacinamide in my skincare was winding my skin up. I have a history of skin allergies developing so I went back to my standard "peeved skin" basic which is Aveeno.

So I'd say cleanse and slather on plain Aveeno cream. The tube one.

Nothing else on there til it's sorted.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/02/2023 21:35

Can I ask which Aveeno?

I had this exact same thing. Nothings shifted it. Everything stung. Couldn't even use E45 cream. Steroid cream helped but dodgy on face, let alone eyelids.

Clinique All About Eyes Rich is what you need. Absolute total god send.

I’ve been using hydrocortisone cream for this but then started using Elemis pro-collagen eye cream and it has completely resolved.

Piffle11 · 13/02/2023 22:04

My doctor told me to use hydrocortisone, twice a day, very thin layer. But don't tell the pharmacist you're putting it on your face ..: say you've got dermatitis on your leg or something.

ButtonMoonMrsSpoon · 13/02/2023 22:12

I've got this at the moment too. So so sore.
Im in an induced menopause and recently started hrt and it's really the only thing that's changed. My eyes have aged so badly in the last month and look awful. This started in December.
I literally slather on vaseline at night and it seems to be helping. Not been able to get a GP appointment.

Sassoon · 13/02/2023 22:16

It sounds like Blepharitis which I have. I use Blephaclean wipes to wash my eyelids and take off my make up morning and night and I rarely suffer from it now. Baby shampoo well diluted with warm water used to clean your while lids twice a day on a cotton pad does the same job but the wipes are really handy.

Holliejollie22 · 13/02/2023 22:28

I get this and the only thing that works is sudacream - it takes 2/3 days but it will clear up and stay cleared up for some time until I have another reaction to something.

I’m very wary of using hydrocortisone on my face as although it works, it never stays clear for long.

Holliejollie22 · 13/02/2023 22:30

@ButtonMoonMrsSpoon vaseline won’t provide the moisture needs to help clear that up you need something with moisture in to take away the dryness. As with my last post I’d try some sudacream.

dinmin · 13/02/2023 22:33

Try a bit of coconut oil!

Hi Button gosh it's like looking in a mirror. Crap isn't it. Sounds like you have been through the ringer. Flowers

Keep me posted of any eye miracles and I will you!

Is this eczema? I get it on my eyelids only when I am stressed. Sulphur cream may help.
