I’ve not owned one myself but have heard enough people extolling their virtues and seen how flattering and easy to wear they are to highly doubt they’re going anywhere.

Are you bored of them yet?

Obviously those pictures are not of Cos dresses- I just mentioned Cos as an example of plain dresses.

KILM · 12/02/2023 13:23

@Twisting I will also take the flattering dresses for long bodies and big boobs please - I want a lower neckline that isn't those bloody matrons v necks that are always cut too high, and I want it to show that I have a waist! Is it really too much to ask 😆

Also I love a mini backpack so wear those, but if you aren't wearing a backpack isn't a crossbody your only option if you want your hands free to live your life?

Annasgirl · 12/02/2023 13:27

Not quite a floral midi, but I just saw a monochrome patterned midi dress, paired with thick soled- Chelsea boots, in the window display of Dolce and Gabanna - I think they are probably more aware of trends than John Lewis.

Quite. I've been wearing crossbody bags in one form or another all my adult life - it started with travel advice and I've stuck with it because it's practical and looks okay. In fact I bought one yesterday. I'm late 50s.

Also casual ageism isn't just limiting, it's really bloody tiresome.

Niftythrifter · 12/02/2023 16:27

I’ve just watched Women Talking and there seemed to be some floral midi dresses on that so to update the midi dress just wear ugly sandals with socks, stick a hair scarf on or plait you hair and wear a hair net. Job done!😂😂

olivehater · 12/02/2023 16:31

I’ve never worn a floral midi , being 5’3” with muscular calves, I get into dinner Lady territory.
have worn floral minis. Are they still allowed?

So you saw a dress that isn't a floral midi at D&G. Well done. Hardly points to floral midis being on trend though so not sure of your point.

Well journeyofinsanity aren't you rude. Looks like Dolce & Gabanna didn't get the memo about floral midis not being "on trend"

@NatashaDancing I think we can all agree that a D&G classic floral dress is about as far removed from a mumsnet floral midi as a leather gimp suit is.

No , I don't agree with you. A midi floral dress is a midi floral dress.

Looks like Erdem didn't get the memo either. And they still have puffy sleeves and frills, heaven forfend!

They do seem to have got the white trainers are out memo though.

Haahaaaaa hilarious that you think the average mumsnetter wears anything even vaguely resembling D&G. So funny. Boden floral frock is nothing remotely like D&G I'm afraid

I went to the Tiffany exhibition in London last year. Every single woman (and it was a packed exhibition) was wearing a floral midi dress and white trainers.

The thing is it is a great outfit for the…er… middle-aged woman. Dress flowing and cool, hides mum tum, covers knees.. and as for trainers - bliss!

And I think this is why it will continue as a favoured summer wear look. It's easy to wear. It's breezy.

I'm happy for midi floral dresses to hang around I just wish the puffed sleeves and tiered skirt elements would bugger off.

What a snob you are.

journeyofinsanity · 13/02/2023 18:33

@NatashaDancing I'd rather be a fashion snob than a dated frump

woodhill · 13/02/2023 20:02

Bring on the frumps I say

I'm firmly in their camp😀

NotMeNoNo · 13/02/2023 20:51

What is the incoming trend for dresses then? That's what I want to know.

Fairyliz · 13/02/2023 21:02

Thank goodness. I’ve never ever purchased one of these floral monstrosities. Perhaps now we can find some plain dresses in the shops.

Amongst other things, oversized tailoring, short dresses (not for all of us!) and longer slimmer skirts. Like a bias satin skirt or a midi denim skirt. Or a longer pencil skirt with long split. Dresses tending towards more plain. Not floral. Of course the odd floral will be ok but moving towards neutral colour palettes

I don't know why but I always look like a sofa in the floral dresses, even though I am not overweight. Something to do with the proportions. I like the comfort of them, but would prefer midi dresses in solid colours and plain cap or half sleeves with no tiers or frills. Doubt I will find any though.

There were plenty of plain dresses available. I don't know why people pretend that because one particular item is very popular it was impossible to buy anything else.

DorritLittle · 13/02/2023 23:41

I don't have a floral midi dress as they would look awful on me. However, I highly doubt they are out just because John Lewis have decided this.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 14/02/2023 03:16

It's summer where I am, and I keep reaching for my floral midi/maxi dresses then putting them back. They're just not feeling right at the moment. I'm preferring more utilitarian looks - shorts/joggers, or a plain linen slip or shift dress.

I'm hoping to get some wear out of them in winter with tights, chunky boots, a turtleneck under, and yes the ubiquitous leather biker. It's still pretty formulaic but feels ... not edgy, but less prissy?

faffadoodledo · 14/02/2023 07:20

We're those dresses lovely and cool to wear last summer though? And gave good coverage against the sun. I think if we continue to have hot summers, and now we're educated about the sun, they'll continue to be worn
