I’ve not owned one myself but have heard enough people extolling their virtues and seen how flattering and easy to wear they are to highly doubt they’re going anywhere.

Are you bored of them yet?

It doesn’t have to be one or the other! 😂

Did I say that?

Theos · 11/02/2023 17:32

What if you are not fat though, do you still have to wear them?

No one HAS to wear them 😀

I do care about how I look and I care about fashion. Several posters have said that floral midis work on any age. Not so. Florals can have a very high potential frump factor for us "women of a certain age."

If you are going to go that way then remove the age factor as I have seen some young women in them and it's not been the best look but think less to do with the dress and more of the rest of it ? Hair/face/what's on feet etc. I hate eg the obviously athletic trainers with dresses.

AuntieStella · 11/02/2023 21:27

I really don't get this idea that clothes have certain ages attached to them.

People can look fantastic or terrible at any age, and it's not down to rules that by Age X thou shalt not wear Item Y.

Casual ageism is very limiting.

I find this to be the case now I'm in my late 60s. Looks simultaneously mutton-y and frumpish.
What they are good it is disguising stains, invaluable when I was breast-feeding and I imagine they'd be just as forgiving of perspiration.

TheDeadOf course everyone is free to wear what they like whenever they like....but this the the 'style & beauty' board & some of us here actually like to think about & talk about....you know.....what's in fashion.....I think it's hilarious how affronted people get by stuff like this . Of course you can keep wearing your floral dresses & trainers & skinny jeans but that doesn't mean things won't move on & some of us will move with it.

If only we were all as "on trend" as you ay?!

There you go proving @TheDead right by getting all sniffy. @TheDead didn't say anything offensive or incorrect. But somehow you managed to be offended.

Loadofoldshart · 12/02/2023 00:21

Yeah they don’t do this to Mens’ suits or the t shirt and jeans combo?!
wear what you want

RhadamanthNemes · 12/02/2023 00:28

No skin in the game here.

I've never owned a floral dress.

I do have to ask, why floral?

Why not plain?

It's quite amusing that you think I'm offended 😂 where did I say the other poster was being offensive?!

You think my reply was "sniffy" it was anything but. When I wrote it, the voice I was using was sarcastic/humour, yet here you are, attempting (rather poorly) to turn it into me being offended.

No wonder it knows up on here with feeble attempts like yours to froth everyone up.....

People can still enjoy and follow fashion though, just because they don't ditch a dress that John Lewis tell them too.

Following fashion doesn't mean you can only wear what JL, Vogue or whoever you follow decides is in. Especially if it's a style or trend that doesnt suit you.

You say everyone is getting affronted. I don't see that, its just comments saying the will continue to wear them as it suits them.

And with all due respect this isnt exactly a high end fashion board where people are only interested in the latest fashion releases and only wearing those, I've seen the photos on the what I'm wearing today posts which proves that! And that absolutely fine because it shows exactly what people wear, clothes that suit and flatter them and shows peoples own styles and how they mix looks to create some incredible outfits which is always the better option that keeping up with latest fashion releases and discarding outfits because you've been told to.

Floisme · 12/02/2023 09:26

You aren't being told to ditch them though, why are you saying that? JL might be planning to destock them but presumably you'll carry on wearing the ones you've already got. The worst that will happen is that you might not be able to replace them in a few years. If you're concerned, I'd take one to a dressmaker and get some copies made.

In any case, for all their bold 'time to move on' chatter, the photo accompanying the article, labelled 'one of the new pieces' looks suspiciously like a flowery frock to me. I suspect much of this is promo hot air designed to get people talking - successfully.

Theos · 12/02/2023 09:33

Also. John Lewis is not exactly the most fashionable place.

Floisme · 12/02/2023 09:38

Evil me thinks they're hoping people will now go and look at their new stock, even if only to point and say how much they hate it, that they'll then realise there are still frocks after all and decide they'd better buy them while they still can.

Ohifyouinsist · 12/02/2023 09:59

Jumpers that go past your belly, in warm fabric, not acrylic. Long arms

Yes! A jumper like this has been almost impossible to find this winter. My old Uniqlo ones are going bobbly, but it's short, or even cropped, jumpers everywhere this winter. Any suggestions (not v neck) gratefully received.

As for floral dresses, people should wear whatever they like. Years ago, a small group of colours were 'in', hemlines were all one length, jeans were all one style and choices were limited to a few clothes shops in your local town. It's great that there's so much more choice nowadays.

arket - loads of choice in cashmere, wool and alpaca. Not cheap but not bad for real wool, and good designs and colours. If they don’t have exactly what you want you can usually find something similar at the sister brands (h&m, cos, other stories) but arket are the best imo.

Ohifyouinsist · 12/02/2023 11:38

That's great, thank you @SockGoddess

There's nothing wrong with floral midi dresses, it's the puffy sleeves, flounces, tiers, and those awful collars that make them look too fussy.

In your opinion
Oh

I like the midi and longer lengths

Wasn't keen on the puffed sleeves though

I will wear what I wear

Also more suited to work than jeans

Twisting · 11/02/2023 09:36

Wouldn't it be amazing if JL could actually ask us what we want?

Right, we need to attract women, aged ..... into our shops. Let's ask them what they will actually buy.

My list would be:
Decent fitted shirts, in interesting colours and patterns, with proper length arms.
Jumpers that go past your belly, in warm fabric, not acrylic. Long arms.
V neck t shirt tops.
No ruffles.
Dresses to fit different body shapes. I don't need 8 badly fitting dresses in different fabrics, how about 1 pattern, but in different shapes? I'll have one for women with long bodies and big boobs please.

Yes and me

MadeOfSteel · 12/02/2023 13:01

I'll still be wearing mine! I'm a bit old to take notice of what us declared fashionable and wise enough to know what suits me.

mistermagpie · 12/02/2023 13:08

I'm in my 40s and still feel like I'm a bit too young for John Lewis, so I'm not sure who they think they are aiming at really.

Skinny jeans never really went away, loads of teenagers and much older people wear them where I live. My teenage neice lives in them and hoodies and she is always telling me how unfashionable I am, so I think she's probably got her finger on the pulse. She wouldn't be caught dead in a floral midi dress mind you.

It's a nice enough look, but I don't think anyone who wears it is really likely to claim to be fashion forward are they? They won't be going anywhere either way, people like them and will continue to wear them regardless.

lieselotte · 12/02/2023 13:12

I don't wear dresses as I don't feel comfortable in them and I do definitely look like a sack of spuds, but it seems very odd to stop selling something that sells well!

And what's wrong with a "uniform"? Saves effort and time when going out - people are busy, they just want an easy life and easy care wardrobe.

NatashaDancing · 12/02/2023 13:20

RainyDaysareCarp · 12/02/2023 12:50

because you look like this...?

I don't think Cos has ever sold a floral dress in its life. Cos has loads of plain but stunning dresses.

The other thing about Cos is that Cos dresses are Cos dresses - it doesn't really matter what some "fashionista" has declared is "in" "out" or "dated" Cos will continue to sell its love 'em or hate 'em dresses.
