I’d like a perfume that makes me feel like Dame Maggie Smith is offering me a scone and telling me kindly that I’m doing a great job and everything’s going to be OK.

For clarification I do not want to smell
like Dame Maggie Smith (although I bet she smells lovely) or a scone.

I have a sometimes grim job in a grim part of the world interacting with sometimes grim people and I’d like to be able to put my nose down my top in private and smell something that makes everything a bit better.

No idea about perfumes. Perfume people scare me. Going to JL next week and would like to have a sniff of maximum 5 perfumes and buy one of them.

Do not want anything remotely sexy, rude, obnoxious, syrupy girlie flowers, loud antibacterial sunshine or clean sheets in the rain I just mowed my lawn in a long dress bullshit.

Anything that fits the bill?

Perfumes preferences are an art not a science aren't they... I read this and thought 'wow, someone genuinely actually likes it!' which is amazing to me because it reminds me of cat urine. 😬😷

I’d say the opposite - they’re a science not an art, in that it’s about ones scientific, chemical make up. What smells bad on one smells amazing on another. It’s why I love perfume.

(I’ll try not to be offended about smelling of cat pee 😂)

nuxe prodigieux. It’s warm and comforting. I use it as my base scent. I layer over it in the evening

Emporio Armani - She. I was recommended this on here and I love it. Very powdery, soft with a hint of citrus and pear.

I'm not good at perfumes but I just wanted to say you sound like an excellent person to know.

Personally I shake lavender oil on everything. It reminds me of my mum and holidays and smells clean.

My first thought was Guerlain Mitsouko. It's just yummy and warm and all the lovely things.
I also love Shalimar, although I can't abide Samsara.
I would also try liz Earle no 15, chanel no5 and Clarins Eau Dynamissante.

My latest favourite is ysl libre intense. It’s fairly strong without being overpowering and it lasts all day.
other firm favourites are Penhaligon halfetti or Luna and chanel chance. The green one. That doesn’t have such staying power but you still be able to smell it if you put your nose inside your top.

I always get compliments when I wear jo Malone sea salt and wood sage.

I'm currently wearing tom ford santal Blush & I absolutely adore it - it's worth having a test spray of that if you're near a perfume counter that stocks Tom Ford range.

I'm a huge fan of his perfumes & have worn lots of them over the years. Other favourites include Neroli Portofino, Costa Azzura, Black Orchid, Rose Prick but I think santal Blush tops them all for me

I am not a fan of chanel perfumes at all

I find the problem with Jo Malone scents is that they wear off very quickly. For what they cost, I resent having to top up every couple of hours.

I'd second O de Lancome, simply because it doesn't tick any of your "don't want" boxes, and JL sell it.

The nicest perfume I've smelt recently was Creed Aventuis - it's marketed as a man's scent but who cares when it smells so gorgeous? Unfortunately the price is less than gorgeous --

Have you smelt the womens aventus? It's beautiful

I like le Labo Another 13, as it has a sharp note which I find uplifting and stimulating.

If I'm looking for a comforting smell, I wear something from my younger years, before responsibility hit, like Dune, Tresor, Anais Anais or Amarige

I know you're not after a laundry smell, but I do spray Miller Harris Lumiere Doree after my bath, as it smells just like persil soap powder from the 80s

Dior Homme Intense.

It isn't manly and it isn't intense. It's like a warm, lovely hug on a floaty cloud. Never overwhelming but it lasts on coats and jumpers for days.

I love estee lauder beautiful, it's really lasting on me. I think it's more sexy than comforting though, but I appreciate perfume is personal!

I can see a PP has recommended Clarins Eau Resourcante. That's my go to comforting scent. Gentle rose without being headachy, lovely botanical undertone. soothing blue bottle that looks just medicianal enough for you to feel it must be good for you. not too pricey so I feel OK about splashing it on. If I know I've got a tough day coming up, that's what I put on

Comptoir noir Sud Pacifique vanille abricot. Basically, it smells like someone is baking a birthday cake. It’s heaven

Perfume is very personal, but Frederick Malle iris poudre is incredible and fits that description in my opinion. It was love at first sniff for me.

I love Givenchy L’Interdit nocturnal jasmine. It’s unlike anything I’ve smelled before. It’s not too sweet, not too spicy, not powdery or fruity or musky. It’s just special. Lots of perfumes that loads of people love smell vile on me. Perfumes that I love on other people often smell vile on me too. But this is perfection. It makes me happy.

Jo Malone Amber and Lavender has a lovely comforting scent.

I wear Fredrick Malle L'Eau D’Hiver when I want to boost my mood.

Frangipane by Chantacaille smells exactly like that. https://chantecaille.co.uk/pages/frangipane Link here.] You won't find it at John Lewis but you should definitely seek out a sample.

I had a bottle of this in the Nineties, from their shop in Paris, no less, Grin loved that stuff.

I love Diptyque Philosykos. It smells green and clean to me, like crushed nettles on a walk through the fields. Maybe not so Maggie Smith, but a sniff down your top in a grimy workplace location would be refreshing.

I agree. While it's quite green there is still a real warmth to it. It's like a slightly sweeter version of Chanel no.19. I mainly wear perfume with a patchouli note as I love it, but this is a nice alternative.
