Casual work dresses

I'm looking for some dresses for work. My job involves visiting people in the community, so I can't have any pluging necklines or high splits in skirts or anything, but not as formal as office attire.

I would quite like some comfy dresses. I really hate sweaty man-made materials, and need a petite size.

Does anyone have any ideas? I quite like fatface but would like some recommendations.

Hush, Fatface, M&S and New Look are my go to for easy to dress up / and be casual dresses. I don't think you can go wrong with a floral print, black tights and patent loafers, especially with a smart blazer type jacket.

Just saw you want petite. I wear petite too so I'd sack off M&S for dresses tbh, they're made for Amazonians.

JennyDarlingRIP · 09/02/2023 22:01

Seasalt do petite, usually organic cotton, dresses

Have a look at Weird Fish. Similar aesthetic to Fatface, but much cheaper. Heavy cottons, wash well, mostly have pockets.

I assume you aren't health related/nursing or you would be in uniform

Apricot, Louche of London and Mountain Warehouse.

Simply Be have a super soft midi with pockets that comes in short + 3/4 length sleeves and a whole heap of different patterns that I recommend. Very comfy and practical

Get into the charity shops if you've got time.. petite sizes often more readily available and I've picked up some real gems

Both make their dresses in the UK.

Seconding the charity shop recommendation by a pp. I have picked up quite a bit of Topshop petite from charity shops. I was also lucky enough to pick up a Boden petite dress in a charity shop but have bought non petite Boden and that has been fine. I also second New Look as they have nice things in their petite range and you can pick up some bargains on the sale rail. M and S might be worth checking out online for short/ petite length.

Sunnycats · 10/02/2023 08:21

I work in an office but fairly casual, I'm petite like you and I like a nice denim dress. I also have a black denim boilersuit that works well (cotton) one short sleeve and one long sleeve.

Yes it’s this one! For whatever annoying reason Simply Be list every different colour/pattern option as a different dress, so the easiest way to see them all is just to search “midi with pockets” on the site.

I wear this one to work with black tights, boots and a cardigan

I would go for knee-length shirt dresses with a relaxed blazer (3/4 sleeve, or ruched, or slightly oversize). If you prefer fitted/waistlength that would work too.

Shirt dresses combine smart for work with casual IMHO. If they are just above the knee, get one in a print that has a little bit of black in it so you can wear with black opaques and then flats/brogues/heels.

They are quite easy to search as unlike seaching "work dresses" (which brings up everything from bodycon to maxi dresses), shirt dresses are quite specific as a style.
