Working from home outfits

I’ve been working from home nearly exclusively since the pandemic and I’ve really gone downhill. I used to enjoy getting dressed up for work but now I’m sat in my box room in increasingly slobbish outfits! Well, they’re fine but the kind of thing I ought to be wearing to pop out to the supermarket rather than work! I want to look smart but not overdressed for sitting at home all day. All my calls are video calls but I don’t have them every day. I’m thinking some nice plain tops or jumpers with big necklaces but I’m utterly clueless. I’ve lost all sense of style and what I like. I’m a size 12 and 5’0” - a bit chubby for my frame. Please let me know if you’ve got any suggestions or are happy to share what you wear!

I'm curating a collection of nice jumpers and smarter tops to go with my collection of leggings and joggers. You can get some nice jumpers with built in collars that look a bit smarter but you are still comfortable. I always think jewellery and a bit of lippy pulls it together but not much needed - a small necklace and subtle earrings is plenty.

For me:

  • Shower before work and perfume
  • Comfortable trousers and slippers
  • Nice block colour jumpers / tops (no patterns) covering shoulders and clivage
  • I don’t like necklaces so for me it is earings
  • A bit of make up
  • Nice hair as if I was out

I have set days for meetings but impromotu requests for calls do pop up often - video on not mandatory but I do like it, it is so much better for rapport building

I find this stylist on YouTube really good...

Thank you! Good ideas about the colour block tops and jewellery. That’s exactly what I’m after. I’m always always always showered and dressed, and I do my hair like I’m going out. Haven’t been bothering with make up or accessories, and what I’m wearing feels too casual. These are great ideas.

I quite often wear leggings or jeans but a nicer top or jumper, earrings, make up (minimal just tinted moisturiser, cream blusher, mascara and lip balm), hair done either naturally curly or straightened but not a mess or just scraped up and always perfume, something about wearing perfume makes me feel more put together.

I wear leggings but on top I have some plain sweatshirt type jumpers in different colours, I then cheat by wearing a "fake collar" tops/attchment underneath that have embellished bits on them . I bought them off Amazon and they are just like a weird bib you wear underneath the jumper.

I always have nice hair and a bit of makeup on.

People think I'm dressed in a shirt, jumper combo, but in reality im in sweatshirt and leggings which is so comfy!! 🤣

@HereComesMaleficent these sound lovely ...can you link?

HereComesMaleficent · 09/02/2023 22:13

I'll warn you now though, there are hundreds of pretty ones and I have become a bit addicted...

I have a staple of 5 sweatshirts.

Black
Light Blue
Magenta Pink
Olive green
Navy

And then about 15 collar bibs.

You can make so many different combos 🤣

PositiveIntelligence · 09/02/2023 22:22

@HereComesMaleficent and where are the sweatshirts from?

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 09/02/2023 22:23

My laptop camera washes me out, so I use brighter colours than I would normally wear. I'm on a no/low but this year so it's been a nice way to use up clothes and makeup which don't quite suit me in real life and would've been out the door otherwise. Always comfy pants on the bottom though!

ouse · 09/02/2023 22:31

Thanks - those collars look beautiful!

I have ordered 4 tops from Boden in navy, a mulled wine shade and a forest green and 4 from Fat Face in teal, plum, navy and dark red. They’re all very plain but made from nice fabrics or with some nice details like broderie. I’m hopeful most of them will be OK. I would like to buy some jewellery next and I fancy some harem jersey trousers too. Probably treat myself to some new perfume too and some new make up bits. I’m hoping the jewel toned block colours will make me look smart! It’s odd being at home by myself all day every day.

Mark's and Spencer about £17 each.
H and M about £12 each.
Fruit of the loom £12 each

They have washed so well, kept their shape and colour well.

I didn't see the point in spending lots of money on home workwear, not that I'm rolling in cash anyway...

Sounds lovely! You will look lovely and smart.

You get used to it, and after a while you cant believe you used to have to share a busy office and deal with colleagues face to face on a daily basis 🤣 Basically you embrace being hermit eventually haha.

NotMeNoNo · 09/02/2023 23:05

I'd like to say I have a selection of tops and jewelry but I've spent nearly all winter in the same two thick navy blue sweaters accessorised with scarves, snoods and Turtle Doves. I agree a natural make up gives you a bit of a boost. Also have "Teams lipstick" to hand when a bit more impact is called for .

FiddleLeaf · 09/02/2023 23:23

I wear arket jogging bottoms & a warm jumper with a necklace and headband. Accessories give the impression that you’ve got your sh|t together

BHRK · 10/02/2023 06:10

M&S merino jumpers are really lovely and cheap for wool! They look smart on Zoom and come in an array of colours. Wash them on hand wash setting in your machine. If you need to be warmer, M&S cashmere is great value, always looks smart. Wear with a vest underneath and you’ll get several wears out of a jumper before it needs washing

Sounds great - could you share the links as I'm looking for similar Smile

I felt in a bit of a rut, looking scruffy and feeling scruffy. I would sometimes go to the shops in the stuff I had been wearing all day and felt a right mess. I have gotten rid of my leggings that were stretched out of shape and my oversized jumpers and I have treated myself to some new jeggings from m&s and some nice cosy jumpers, with some base layers underneath, I also got some new jeans and cardigans for weekend wear to try and keep work/home a bit separate x
