Home hair dye

I need a good home hair dye. My hair is brunette medium brown but when I put it on it has that really obvious dye look and I hate it.
I can't afford the hairdressers for a colour so need some advise how to get rid of that harsh colour and make it more natural. I am quite grey so may need to go abit lighter. Is there any way I can get a more natural looking colour or do highlights myself?
Thanks

Is that your natural colour before you went grey? I'd go a bit lighter, our skin pales as we age. I use Excellence Crème and find it covers grey well. I wouldn't worry this time if you've just dyed it but in 6wks when you do it again do your whole head a few shades lighter, keep doing that each time until you find a shade you're happy with.

Thankyou. Will give it a go! Yep I am 48 and need to go lighter.
