TikTok beauty recommendations

I spotted a face cream called face floss by Smoom on TikTok which claims to reduce redness and spots. I have red patches and the only thing that used to work for me was korres sleeping facial, but that stings and smells very strong, also quite expensive. Was massively sceptical but purchased it … and it actually works just like the reviews say.

TikTok seems to be a place where you can get genuine beauty reviews from real people. Rather than paid influencers. I used to follow beauty journalists but became disillusioned by their so called independent advice.

So what are your top beauty recommendations spotted on TikTok?

I’m aware of products that have exploded on there such as Tom Ford frost lip balm and Baccarat rouge perfume.

Are you a journalist?

PotatoFacedWombat · 26/01/2023 06:47

I've seen a lot of TikToks recently saying the exact opposite- that lots of makeup and beauty TikTokers are lying through their teeth about these products because of unofficial advertising deals. There was one who was testing out mascara on one eye, and it looked amazing- until you noticed that it was quite clearly a false lash.

I'd be very surprised if this was true. Anyone getting any real numbers of followers will be getting paid.

No definitely not a journalist, just a regular mumsnetter who has posted a lot on S&B about products over the years, have name changed but used to post a lot on the perfumista thread and snail skincare.

Interesting responses, I’m guessing maybe you don’t use TikTok if you think it’s like other platforms, lots of people can go viral with few followers. Actually, the influencers from other platforms not doing so well on there. I guess it will go the same way soon, but definitely seems to be easier to see real people with genuine non-paid for content that is not highly polished.

just like any other platform there will be some content creators who are genuine and make trustworthy reviews, and there will be some where impartiality of the creator is limited because of product placement, disclosed and undisclosed ads, items gifted...

I can't be doing with tiktok influencers. They lie through their teeth and i will never buy plouise or made by Mitchell or anything recommended by that awful Mikayla woman simply because it's blatantly had advertising space bought for it on social media

I fall for crap all the time because I follow the more 'credible' accounts on Instagram, the ones who are accredited experts themselves and fully declare partnerships etc. Nadine Baggott, Sali Hughes, the hot American blow dry guy etc. They speak with experience and authority.

If I could have a tattoo it would say 'what works for thee may not work for me'.

I even bought the Milkshake hair conditioner spray recommended here and it was meh.

This is how the beauty industry works. Create a desire for the new, and women like me won't even get to the bottom of a bottle of shampoo before having our head turned and buying a new one.

CoconutAmericano · 26/01/2023 13:11

You better believe they're being paid on tt to influence us!

thedevilinablackdress · 26/01/2023 13:23

And I reckon this is why they discontinue favourite products @MorrisZapp , so we end up buying 5 different serums to replace the lovely Ren one you can't get any more...

Heyjoewhatsup · 26/01/2023 18:55

Interesting replies, maybe it’s just my TT account algorithm but I seem to be shown content from accounts with small numbers of followers. I’m certainly not seeing Sali Hughs and the usual influencers. That’s what I like about it - the lack of influencers and real people!
