If you hate heels and have wide feet, what smart shoes do you wear at work?

My old Hamble Oak brogues are scratched and a bit shabby, plus they’re still giving me blisters three years in (I have a wide forefoot but narrow heels so they rub on the heel). I was going to buy another pair and live with the blisters, but are there any other options for a smart, conservative office? I mainly wear trousers, a mix of wide leg and skinny, occasionally a dress.

Birkenstock have a good range and I wear their sneaker style shoes and boots all the time. I have wide feet but am a narrow in Birkenstocks .

Optionally · 21/01/2023 12:37

I love Birkenstocks, but I can’t see anything that looks smart enough. Most women seem to have pointy toe heels, which do look lovely, but even if I could fit them on my feet I’d never wear them through sheer discomfort. I need something that’s equally smart and professional looking.

flat heel ankle boots for cold weather, ballet flat style for hot temps (had an office that had both extremes daily, so kept both styles at work).

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 21/01/2023 12:39

DMs.

Sleepwalkingintothewall · 21/01/2023 12:39

I wear Chelsea boots or biker style boots (not too chunky) with dresses.

Queenmargery · 21/01/2023 12:41

I wear Caprice lace up shoes. Sort of half way between a trainer and a brogue. I work in a hospital and do a lot of walking.

Optionally · 21/01/2023 12:42

Chelsea boots would work for winter I think. DMs aren’t smart enough. I’m still stuck for summer as I’ve never found a pair of ballet flats that works for me, and Converse are more of a dress down Friday thing than something I could wear every day.

I wear Chelsea boots, DMs, chunky brogues and flatforms.

Don’t know anyone that still wears heels tbh.

HeyMicky · 21/01/2023 12:47

Brogues, Chelsea boots, clean white trainers and smart biker boots.

Flat leather sandals in summer

ReamsOfCheese · 21/01/2023 12:50

Depends on your age but I tend to wear Mary-Janes. Tricky to find atm but a lot easier on the heels as I have wide feet with narrow heels and can't keep ballet flats on unless they have the Mary-Jane strap.

UglyBeauty · 21/01/2023 12:53

if I had to be smart, wide fit loafers.

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 21/01/2023 12:54

I would go for a D’Orsay flat with a strap. Something like this.

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 21/01/2023 12:57

Or with wide leg trousers I would wear some chunky loafers probably.

Optionally · 21/01/2023 12:58

Mary Jane’s make me look older and a bit frumpy, unfortunately. I’m mid 40s and am trying to avoid frumpiness (which is my natural look), so that isn’t good. I’m sure other people can get away with them. Or maybe there are some really smart ones (perhaps less round toed) I’ve missed? I think loafers might also be a good option.

What size are you? Could you check out men's shoes? I'm a size 7 and often wear men's boots and sandals. I don't ever need smart shoes but would probably go for men's brogues if I did.

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 21/01/2023 12:54

Would never have thought of that style, but yes! Can you link to sort of chunky loafers you meant, too? Thanks so much!

I have the same problem OP and came to recommend the hamble oaks!

Fitflop sometimes come up trumps with something smart enough but I have an ongoing search for smart work shoes. Office occasionally has suitable styles in wide fit too

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 21/01/2023 13:17

These are the sort of loafers I was thinking of. They are not that pretty to look at but you need a bit of a shoe height with wide leg trousers and chunky soles do that without uncomfortable heels!

I have a wide forefoot and narrow heel combo, it’s a pain (literally!) for finding smart shoes and I haven’t cracked it yet. I have Hamble Oaks but can’t wear them for longer than a couple of hours.

Fir summer I have two different styles of Fly London heeled (low wedge) closed-toe sandals but they’re probably not smart office friendly.

InflagranteDelicto · 21/01/2023 13:24

I have wide feet with a narrow heel too. I'm also on my feet all day so comfort is important. I have a pair of ecco suede ankle boots with arch support insoles. They are so comfy!

TheOGCCL · 21/01/2023 13:28

Are your Hamble Oaks wide fit or standard? As they come in both and even in narrow.

Standard fit. Which is fine on the forefoot (my feet are not that wide, just wider than average for smart shoes) but doesn’t work on the heel.

Thanks! It’s the right look, which is what I was finding elusive.

For those recommending Fly London, I can’t see anything smart enough, but I’ve heard brilliant things about how comfy they are so I will keep looking.
