Hi, I’m going into John Lewis today to spend some Christmas money. I’m approaching 40 with good skin but no idea about make up. I’m looking for under eye cream, concealer and mascara. Where would you recommend?

If you’ve no idea about make up I’d say Bobbi Brown or may be Clarins.

Lancôme’s concealer is awesome (teint idole one). Mascara from Charlotte Tilbury.

I think Nars is a good all-rounder. I particularly like their face products; foundation, concealer, cream bronzer and blusher.
I prefer Lancome for mascaras.
Armani's cream eyeshadows are fab.
Have fun!

Thanks for the tips. I’m looking forward to it!

The staff on the Dior counter are always really helpful. I’m currently using Diorshow mascara and love it, Benefit mascaras are also good.

Clinique All About Eyes is a lovely eye cream.

I like Rodial concealers.

Under eye cream my preference is Kiehl's, NARS concealer is lovely and then either Too Faced or Lancome for mascara.

TheOGCCL · 21/01/2023 10:09

I think Clinique would suit best for the all products you want.

MAC are actually proper trained makeup artists so are great for advice. Just don't be intimidated by the beautiful girls in full makeup they employ!

PAFMO · 21/01/2023 13:04

I'd agree with Bobbi Brown, Clarins and Clinique for basics and without the hard sell.
BB for concealers, powders and eyeshadow
Clinique for Quickliners and chubby sticks

GetOffTheTableMabel · 21/01/2023 13:09

Lancôme do fabulous mascaras and concealer.

Metabigot · 21/01/2023 13:14

I would go to Bobbi Brown

Funnily enough, I'm going to JL this afternoon to get post Xmas bits and I desperately need a new concealer as well. Tarte shape tape covers the shadows but makes my eyes look puffy somehow. Thanks for pp's recommendations

I went to John Lewis in White City Westfield recently. I wanted a certain MAC eye shadow. I could see they did not have many there and when I asked for it she had not heard of it and called me 'Dear'. Luckily, they still have a Mac store elsewhere in Westfield so I went in, was immediately seen to and the lady knew what I wanted and all without calling me 'Dear'!

Some of them are , not all of them as a friend works for them and isn't trained.

I would echo BB for subtle makeup .
