Help - ideas needed for mother of the bride / groom outfit

I have a friend who sadly is quite unwell with early onset dementia. Her child is getting married shortly (end of March) and I have just realised that her husband had no plans to try and buy her a new outfit for the wedding (he will be in the same hired suits as the men but was planning that she would wear a casual outfit from her limited wardrobe). She has no family close to her other than her husband. It is a stately home type venue.

I have agreed to help to try and find her a suitable outfit but time is now short and the budget is limited - as low as possible and certainly not more than £120. Added to which I have no sense of style myself.

Preferences would be quite tailored, knee length and blue. I am thinking a shift dress and short jacket or similar? She does not like clothes to be overly fussy.

I will need to order outfits that she can try at home. She is not well enough to go shopping. Early 60's size 14 / 16.

All ideas for styles / shops / websites would be gratefully received. It really is a very sad situation.

Can you help me find a suitable outfit?

Thanks🙏

@weddingoutfitssues perfect :)
i would have been more helpful with links but my time zone isn't the same as yours and i was a touch too tired but didn't want the thread to be left unread.

I actually ordered that exact outfit earlier today after the recommendation here from a previous poster to check out the Hobbs.

Also ordered another couple of dresses from Debenhams so hopefully by the time I see her next Wednesday I’ll have a few outfits for her to try on and choose from. I do hope I can find her something she’ll feel and look amazing in.

Thanks everyone.

You are so kind to take this on.

I love that Hobbs outfit OP. Hopefully it'll look gorgeous on and the lady will feel comfortable in it.
Just to reiterate what others have said, you're a very, very kind and thoughtful person. XX

Ive no idea about dresses or which shops to try, however, I just want to say your kindness is beautiful

NotMeNoNo · 21/01/2023 19:48

I took my mum shopping for a dress before Christmas which is the first time since her dementia diagnosis. We tried Seasalt. She only managed to try on a few but the main thing was getting them comfortable around the neck/shoulder, not too low and gaping or high and uncomfortable. One of their dresses (perhaps shortened) might do with a soft jacket.
If it's not too smart she might be able to wear it later.

I don't have links to suggest but I would like to praise you for your kindness in wading in here. If you are near a nice market town, there are often very small independent shops who are likely to be much more helpful than the big high street stores. If you were in the southwest, I would suggest Brigid Foley in Tavistock for example. They have a website, and a shop, and the lady who owns the shop is of an age to be super sympathetic and helpful.

ANd she has a really good eye for styles that will suit and be comfortable.

Roman have some lovely dresses and they have a sale on too at the moment. Are you near a TK Maxx or Boundary Mill? They are very good too for more dressy outfuits.

bookmarking in case you have a chance to ipdate us on Wednesday after you e seen your friend. She’s very lucky to have you looking out for her. Dementia is a thief and it does strange things to loved ones, I hope her daughter comes round and appreciates the effect that you’ve put in to support her mother, it’s very thoughtful of you to not want her to experience any discomfort liking at the wedding photos after the fact

weddingoutfitssues · 26/01/2023 20:02

@asparalite thank you!

I ordered this exact outfit and she tried it on tonight. She looks wonderful and says she feels comfortable. She loves the jacket especially and it’s her favourite colour. Managed to pick up a new pair of shoes in a charity shop that fit well and she is good to go.

Thanks so much everyone for your help. I hope she can have some lovely photos with her family and enjoy the day as much as she is able to.

Very pleased to hear the outfit is a success, I sincerely hope she has a lovely day, thanks indeed for updating us.

Sussexlass84 · 26/01/2023 22:04

No advice OP but just came across this thread, and wanted to say what lovely friends this lady has in you both.

PolliFlinders · 27/01/2023 07:24

So pleased you found something lovely. Thanks for the update.

CMOTDibbler · 27/01/2023 08:10

Bless you for helping your friend. My mum was more into moderate dementia when my brother got married and I got her an outfit on Ebay from Jacques Vert for very little but it was so important to me that mum looked nice as it was an echo of who she was before

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 27/01/2023 09:54

Yes I also think it's a lovely thing to be doing.

My DF was amazing when my DM had dementia: he went through absolute hell and coped amazingly well under increasingly hellish circumstances. The one thing he was rubbish at was smarter dressing: I needed to step in and help whenever it would be appropriate for her to dress up a bit, and it did improve her mood to be looking nice in the attractive collection of clothes she'd gathered over a lifetime.

Thank you for the update!
