Hi could anyone help me with advice for new outfits please? I'm a size 18/20 and only 5ft and I just feel I look awful in all my clothes. I've a big tummy which really doesn't help! Thanks

Who are your style icons OP? Who do you think dresses really well?
We could start from there and build up some lookbooks

LookItsMeAgain · 13/01/2023 18:05

I would highly recommend getting some really good quality underwear. Something like this will hold in all the wobbly bits (I know I'm a similar size with a tummy too):
www.marksandspencer.com/firm-control-magicwear-waist-cincher/p/clp60498572?color=BLACK#intid=plpnav_pid_pg1pip39g4r1c1

That will really help with whatever we suggest to wear over it!

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 13/01/2023 20:10

@crochetmonkey74 you know it's not something I've ever thought about! I'll have a Google

@LookItsMeAgain great idea would you say they were comfortable?

I find it really useful. Put their name followed by outfits into pinterest and you'll get some good ideas

20thcenturygirlwithherhandsonthewheel · 13/01/2023 20:20

I’m similar sized: and live in dresses

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 13/01/2023 20:23

@20thcenturygirlwithherhandsonthewheel what type of dresses? Any ideas? Thanks 😊

OP posts:
KezzabellaB · 13/01/2023 20:38

Blimey OP you could be me! Lol Same height, size and I've also got a big tummy. I also have a small bust which means I don't have a 'boob shelf' and tops cling to my tummy and don't skim🫤
I have no style icons unfortunately but would love to look 'well put together'. I'm watching with interest and hope you get some advice (that I can steal)☺️

crochetmonkey74 · 13/01/2023 20:59

Would a swing dress suit you do you think OP? With leggings and boots?

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 13/01/2023 21:01

@KezzabellaB I'm different as in I do have a big bust but I just feel all the focus is on my tummy! Yes I'm the same I'd just love to look nice for my size I haven't a clue.

I wear a lot of Joe Browns stuff from Simply Be - my work uniform is jeggings with a tunic top and smart cardigan with knee length boots. M & S and White Stuff are brilliant for jeggings and tunics, as well as Adini London. I also find skater dresses really suit my shape with thick tights ( M & S or Snag tights).
I also love Taking Shape as their stuff fits really well.

Merple · 13/01/2023 21:19

I'm a similar size and big busted. I wear longline shirts and jeans or leggings. Shirt dresses sometimes. This sort of thing.

crochetmonkey74 · 13/01/2023 21:59

I second Simply Be and I think Yours is good too.

For summer, i love this type (with cycling shorts or cub rub pants under them)

What's your budget op? I find yours a bit cheap and shapeless I buy from M&S, new look ( can be hit and miss but ive some dresses that I always get lovely comments in, again some items here can be a bit cheap), river island (I get sale items), Karen Millen (I'm a 22 so can't always get stuff but you might)

I'm a 22 with big belly, I find I feel better in more structured fabrics, I find with yours the fabrics are a bit flimsy and shapess, better quality fabrics hangs better

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 14/01/2023 09:11

@Guavafish1 Thanks I've ordered a dress and a top they're lovely

OP posts:
OwletteGeckoCatboy · 14/01/2023 09:17

@FredaFox my budget isn't massive probably about £30 an item slightly more if I really like it.

I used to love new look but a lot of the nicer dresses only go up to about a 14 and there's too many crop tops for my liking these days.

I can never decide on m&s I really like the maxi dresses but I feel they'd drown me! I'll keep an eye out though 🙂

Have a look at Laura.Adlington on instagram. She was on GBBO a few years ago and now has a podcast but also posts lots of try on photos of plus size clothing. Lots from Simply Be, Very, Joules, various supermarkets so reasonable prices.

LookItsMeAgain · 14/01/2023 10:46

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 13/01/2023 20:11

@LookItsMeAgain great idea would you say they were comfortable?

They are. There are loads of varieties of these in various different shops including supermarkets in their clothes sections. Get the ones that go up to the bra line. You need good support underwear before you can get the clothes to go over them.

Then I'd make these suggestions
Option 1
Option 2 (the whole outfit that the model is wearing here)
Option 3
Option 4 (the whole outfit that the model is wearing in this picture)
Option 5
Option 6

Just a couple of suggestions from the new season in Next. As I was browsing I noticed that they also have Spanx available on their website so could be exactly what you're looking for.

I was just going to say the same thing, she's fab inspiration for plus size clothing. Her website has some good reviews and links to plus size retailers too.

Just reading the other posts that have been made and someone suggested following someone on Instagram. I've thought of another person that you might want to follow there - Stylemecurvy. This is a woman named Louise O'Reilly who is an Irish model and she is a size 18. Some of her fashion choices are simply stunning and she does reply to posts asking for advice. Definitely give her a follow!
