I went perfume shopping but John Lewis was a but busy and the perfume shop was small and didn't seem to have many options

I'm mid 40s, haven't worn perfume for years but I've got some Christmas money and would like to get a new one.

I don't know the right words for scents I like but here goes:
I used to wear Chanel Chance, I have a little left in my old bottle and still quite like it but it's a bit too sweet and fudgey for me now, I'd like a slightly more sophisticated, maybe more floral scent, but keeping that richness IYSWIM?

I also used to like Acqua Di Gio, I like the light freshness (again I have some in a 16 year old bottle which still smells nice to me!)

Both of these scents are 20s me and I'd like something new for 40s me

I really like the smell of Sure Cotton stick deodorant, that kind of clean linen smell.

I think Chanel no 5 is quite nice, maybe I should just get that... keen on any other ideas people can throw at me. I'll go back to JL and try them all next week! So fairly mainstream scents if poss please

A nice perfume (and not overly expensive) is Emporium Armani in the tin

give it a try- I always admire this on people and repurchase myself

I used the scents you like in my 20s and now my fave is alien, the original purple one, but lots of people seem to dislike it, maybe its like marmite? But i like it

Have a look at the scents from Le Labo. I get a lot of compliments when I wear perfume from this brand.

Ooh fantastic, loads to try! Huge thanks

I'll report back once I've tried the ones listed (which I can find) and hopefully I'll be smelling nice again soon...

If JL stock Miller Harris, try Fleurs de Sel as well. And I'd always recommend a squirt of Diptyque Philosykos as it's simply delicious.

Chanel No 19 is a bit more grown up and sophisticated than Chance, but not as powerful as No 5. You need to let it warm up on your wrists before you get its full depth.

SqueakyDinosaur · 09/01/2023 15:52

No19 always smells of watermelons to me! In a nice way, but that's what I get from it.

ShesNotTheMessiah · 09/01/2023 15:57

Penhaligon's Halfeti.

Expensive (but cheaper in the unboxed sales) but so incredibly delicious.

Mmm replica - try bubble bath and lazy Sunday morning to sniff

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/01/2023 16:11

You could try Burberry London
or Gucci Rush
both quite fresh clean scents
