My hair is (dyed) blonde, just below shoulder length and prone to being flyaway.
Have used Kérastase but want to find something less spendy.

Any ideas?

Heave tried all budgets.
Apart for Olaplex I don't think you can beat Garnier Banana Hairfood which is as cheap as chips!!

BaconAndAvocado · 30/12/2022 20:28

Thanks.
I can’t stand the smell of bananas! Does it come in any other varieties?

Liz Earle Mask smells delicious but I've just re-purchased Phillip Kingsley Elasticiser and it has made a huge difference to my cotton-wool hair .

I know the PK is a love it or hate it product , but the 1 Litre works out better value £/ml

It does! For example Papaya and also coconut; each for different hair needs.

Garnier did nothing for me but it has loads of raving reviews. I can't stand banana either, forced myself to try it saw no change then tried the watermelon one, no change.

Like skin, what works for someone's hair may not work for you and a lot is down to the nature of your hair and whether it needs protein or moisture for example.

I have dry hair and love Protein Mask by Palmer's. I also had great results with Aussie intensive hair mask. I love Pantene's Keratin mask. As an after styling treatment, Marula oil from The Ordinary is really good on taking down the flooffyness and flyaways that I still get after blowdrying, makes it so shiny but it doesn't make it look greasy.

Hair food made my hair feel like straw.

When you say less spendy do you mean initial outlay? Or cost per use?

Because I find Phillip Kingsley goes a long way. I put it in damp hair. Put a shower cap on and then sleep on it and wash the best morning.

For the last year I have been using the brand ‘hair syrup’. It’s a hair oil, so it depends how well your hair/ scalp tolerates oil. I use the growsmary on my scalp, and a bit on the ends. Once a month I use their buttercream conditioner on the end. Leave it on a few hours and then rinse out. The butter cream isn’t recommended if you have really porous hair. I have been doing this for a year and it’s really improved my hair.

The syrup is is about £13 a bottle and lasts about 6 months.

Fanola mask .. heavenly

Blue so tones , very hydrating on my bleached highlights

fuckthemail · 31/12/2022 07:19

Super spendy but lasts ages - another vote for PK

Twilightstarbright · 31/12/2022 07:26

Another vote for PK. Try a small size then a
litre bottle is good value if you like it. I’ve spent so much money on dupes, waste of time!

Hair types are different, depending on your hair type - dry, oily, normal etc - you'd choose a mask. BTW if you want to try natural hair masks, that you'd later rinse away: egg (yolk/ white- each is for different type such as dry/oily. I can't remember which is for what type though), milk, lemon/lime juice, soaked fenugreek seeds paste, fresh hibiscus leaves paste( a bit difficult get hold in the U.K. except summer if you have a plant in the garden), plain coconut oil (or you could make rosemary infused oil). All natural alternatives are really good. Except egg which will leave you with egg smell, which some don't like - to put it mild. Oil will have to be washed off after an hour, you can do this once a week. Other herbal treatments can be rinsed off with water. Hibiscus is considered very good for hair, gives silky feeling after rinsing. Also is fenugreek paste ( 3tb sp seeds soaked overnight and pasted in the morning and then apply to hair and scalp), which is a particularly an all round ingredient for women's health. Milk and egg will provide with good nutrients for hair roots and will rejuvenate hair growth. All that you need is a bit of time and patience for self pampering.

Coconut oil from ALDI is best and economical that I have seen so far, equal to or better than coconut oil sold in other shops such as boots. Some also sell as coconut butter which is just coconut oil anyway - IMO.

When I was younger always had lovely shiny hair, never even had to blow dry it now in peri menopause it gets so flyaway and a frizzy mess, I ordered Opilex no 6 from Amazon and it is life changing but you only need less than a finger tip of it and it leaves the hair supersoft and not flyaway. It is amazing. Some local chemists also sell them. It is expensive but will last for ages as shocked how little you need. Hope this helps.

schmalex · 31/12/2022 08:56

I loved the banana hair food but found papaya was completely useless.

My absolute favourite hair mask though is Davines Oi Hair Butter. You can put it on damp hair before washing, leave for a few hours and wash out, or just use it as a conditioner. Super moisturising and I love the smell.

Mojitomogul · 31/12/2022 08:59

L'Oréal professional vitamino colour mask , it comes in a light pink tub with black top. It's amazing, so light but nourishing, always come back to it, lasts for ages. Can get online or from a hair trade shop.

Just used it for the first time and my dull grey hair actually has some shine again and feels lovely. I’m so glad you commented Flowers

catmademedoit · 01/01/2023 12:08

I used kerastase for years and then saw a recommendation on here for Bleach London Reincarnation mask. It’s a fraction of the price and just as good (for me at least) - leaves my hair much more manageable and shiny. Definitely worth a go!

babyboyHarrison · 08/01/2023 22:13

This.

I used to do mobile hairdressing so always had bleach and peroxide in the house. This led to DD bleaching her hair off several million times.

This along with Olaplex and Aphogee two-step protein treatment has kept her hair attached to her head when it would usually be down the drain.
