I need some serious foundation help !

Up until two years ago I was a brunette. I never had a problem with foundation. I always managed to find a colour to suit me.

Now my hair is silver. It is a beautiful colour and people compliment me on it. The problem I have now is that the foundation I normally use looks wrong now. It all looks too orange and I think it is because of the hair.

If I go too light I look like a corpse and even when I have tried mixing foundations together I am not having any success.
Is there a magic formula for ladies with grey/silver/white hair that I am missing ?Even BB cream does not work for me now.

For context I normally use illuminating foundation YSL La touche eclat and similar which has been great until now.

Thanks

Try asking at a beauty counter, then check how it looks in natural daylight before buying it

DannydeVitooo · 29/12/2022 20:03

Agree. You need to go to counters. Take your time

Niftythrifter · 29/12/2022 20:09

Yes get lots of samples that you can take away. I have found that M and S are good for samples of their foundation (given to me by the Clinique SA) and I am sure Clinique would probably do the same.

KirstenBlest · 29/12/2022 20:10

I'd try the Boots No 7 counter first, they have lots of shades and is not £££.

Good shout then use findation website once you're happy with the shade

If you can get to the shops, try Bobbi Brown and Clinique.
They both do foundations that come in 30 and 28 shades!

B Brown Skin Foundation is very light and slightly glowy. They will colour match you but as it's over £30, look at it at home- get a sample.

Ditto for Clinique. Their Even Better foundation is good.

Both will allow you to return foundation bought online if you choose the wrong shade. You can do a quiz on their sites to try to work out your shade.

Boots only do around 8 shades in their foundations. None is quite right for me.

KirstenBlest · 29/12/2022 20:28

@JinglingXmasbells , my local Boots branch has lots more shades than 8

Maybe I wasn't clear.

Their No 7 Hydraluminous foundation comes in only 8 shades, as do most of their other No 7 foundations.

Just looked there's about 40 shades of No7 Stay Perfect Foundation on their website.

And at least 18 of hydraluminous.

Admittedly it probably depends how light/deep your skin tone is as to if any of them are any use though!

ReindeerBelieve · 30/12/2022 00:41

Depends where you are of course but I went to the Lisa Eldridge pop up in Covent Garden just before Christmas and was colour matched outside in daylight and I was very pleased with the match - I certainly wouldn't have chosen the shade if I had relied online but it was spot on

Otherwise I'd second Bobbi Brown as they do returns . Not sure if they still do it but I did a session via zoom which matched me very well too

deepcambor · 30/12/2022 00:48

Hmm, is your skin pale? Are you trying to use foundation to warm up your skin? Would be better relying on blush/cool tone bronzer? Just a question because this is where I was going wrong with my make up!

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 30/12/2022 00:57

Agree with above, now that your hair is silver, you may need a foundation with a cooler (pink) undertone rather than a warm undertone. MAC will match to this and also The Ordinary. You probably don't need a paler colour just a different undertone.

MistyRock · 30/12/2022 03:18

It sounds like you are wearing the completely wrong undertone. Try either a Neutral tone or most probably a Cool tone. So ones with a C or N on the bottle.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 30/12/2022 10:41

Thank you. Lots to think about here. I am also of the opinion that I am using the wrong undertone. My skin is not pale but the stark difference when I use makeup against the hair looks ill thought out and just wrong.

@imalreadygone , thanks. I sometimes think that if I posted an indisputable fact on here, someone would contradict me.

They must have changed it because when it first launched there were only 8- that was a criticism of the beauty gurus in the media, too.

New foundations often start with a shitty shade range so yeah I belive there may have been 8 initially. Not really acceptable from a big brand is it!

Correct! There still isn't a shade for me. The pale ones are too pink .

Booo!

Anyway OP - might be a good and affordable place to start to try and get a shade match, just be weary not all brands do the undertones right.

LadyLapsang · 30/12/2022 14:36

I use Armani Luminous Silk and Chatecaille tinted moisturiser, Just Skin, although L’Oreal Paris with SPF and hyaluronic acid recently got good coverage in The Times and is only 9.99 in Boots and they are doing GWP if you spend 20.00.
