What style and beauty lessons have you learnt in 2022, the good, bad and the awful?

I've fully succumbed to the wide leg jean.

A bit late to the party on this one but layering necklaces over knitwear.

Hmm, can you tell I live in jeans and jumpers? 😆

How about you, OP?

Cocolapew · 29/12/2022 12:38

DD bought me tanning drops and a brush and the brush is excellent for doing hands and ankles 😄, (I wear a lot of ankle grazer trousers)

LetsGoDoDoDo · 29/12/2022 12:56

@Cocolapew what type of brush? I use a mitt and the results can be rather dubious!

Cocolapew · 29/12/2022 13:01

It's this one 🙂

Thanks, I'll add it to my wish list 😊

Oooh, I’m here for this.

I have learned that I will never regret buying a cashmere jumper. By Terry’s ‘sunny flash’ cc serum thing is amazing. Dark lipstick does not suit me. It’s so much easier to put an outfit together with a wardrobe that is predominately neutrals. Handbalms everywhere means I will use them (car, desk, by sofa, bedside etc).

Rainmakerof69 · 29/12/2022 13:36

I've yet to see a significant difference between cheap and expensive make up, so will no longer hanker over the pricier stuff.
Elf brow wow and Rimmel London Scandaleyes eyeliner will be bought again.

SuperGinger · 29/12/2022 13:37

Do not do strange things to your eyebrows, you might end up looking odd.

Rainmakerof69 · 29/12/2022 13:37

Lipsticks make my lips feel uncomfortable.

Newlifenewme · 29/12/2022 13:44

My face is drying up and wrinkling and I need to look after it, not just wash with a bit of soap and it will be fine.

perfume kept for best doesn’t keep well so use best everyday. I’m worth it

I don’t suit dark brown lipsticks

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 29/12/2022 14:15

I really, really like botox but it makes my eyes hooded and feel sleepy.

Aldi skincare is the tits and I don't need to buy expensive stuff anymore.

Glitter DMs go with everything

My "style" has evolved into 80s pub landlady and I'm not sad about it. I'm happily wearing my sequins on the school run with zero shame.

Thinkingswillbebetter · 29/12/2022 14:34

Passing certain birthday doesn't mean short hair suddenly suits me.

Thinkle · 29/12/2022 14:53

Style and beauty lesson: an undercut can actually improve my cut even though my hair is fine

Style and beauty (the thread) lesson: people can be very critical of others choices and in some cases downright mean. Stay strong and wear the things that bring you joy. Channel a bit of your inner @MrsPicklesonSmythe

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2022 14:58

It is worth splurging on a Chanel lipstick.

I really do mostly just want to wear jeans and a black jumper for most of the year, so I might as well have some nice black jumpers.

It's worth having plenty of coats and pairs of boots if you live in the UK, because that's mostly what you'll be wearing for much of the year.

Niftythrifter · 29/12/2022 15:37

People will always have things to say regardless so I’ll wear what makes me feel good and stuff anyone else.

Don’t wear a favourite pear of jeans and then decide to put your foundation on or risk staining your jeans.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie
What's so good about a Chanel lipstick? I bought a Lisa Eldridge one and although I like the colour it still drys my lips out.

OxanaVorontsova · 29/12/2022 16:38

If the thing you’ve coveted for years suddenly pops up in a sale it’s worth splurging (and then cutting back on other stuff). Buy the good stuff when you can afford to rather than the cheap crap to make you feel better.

Fairyliz · 29/12/2022 16:39

There’s not a lot of difference between cheap and expensive products; what makes the difference is using them on a regular basis. So get yourself in a routine that you follow every day.

CountryCob · 29/12/2022 18:14

Love this thread! I have that brush @Cocolapew but thought it was for bronzer! How do you use it with drops? I have tonnes of actual fake tan would it work with that? I agree with Rimmel @Rainmakerof69 they do my favourite mascara much better than Charlotte Tilbury in my experience. @MrsPicklesonSmythe I am also becoming a spangly older lady. Quite frankly it is better than the alternative and the waife grunge look is extremely hard to pull off after even 28 in my opinion. Although I agree people can be really unnecessarily angry about other people’s style choices.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2022 18:17

@Rainmakerof69 It feels so luxurious when I whip it out of my bag (never had an expensive lipstick before) and it's really hydrating.

Yes to spangles - I squeezed my over 50 fatter than I've ever been self into a sequin mini skirt last week. I also have a sequin t-shirt for wearing with jeans and bovver boots.

Cocolapew · 29/12/2022 18:38

@CountryCob I dot a decent amount of moisturiser, I use Nivea Soft, over my face and neck then one drop of tanning drops on each blob (I'm v scientific as you can tell) then brush it all over my face and neck.
Same with the back of my hands.
I very pale so only use one drop of tan on each blob of moisturiser.

CountryCob · 29/12/2022 18:54

@Cocolapew thank you, will give that a try, and dig the brush out of my make up bag…..

Niftythrifter · 29/12/2022 18:56

This is not a new lesson but worth mentioning. Good boots for me means the ability to have them reheeled and resoled when the time comes. They might cost a little more but are worth it. Also find yourself a decent cobbler that does a good job at a good price.

shivermetimbers77 · 29/12/2022 19:01

The less I do to my skin the better it is and expensive is not always better.

ValBiro · 29/12/2022 19:07

Lash extensions. I stopped wearing make up after the first time I got them done in January as they give me enough confidence to feel "done".
