What style and beauty lessons have you learnt in 2022, the good, bad and the awful?

Wearing what makes me happy tends to get more compliments than wearing something "respectable". I'm not always spangly but I'm definitely channeling @MrsPicklesonSmythe

Motorina · 29/12/2022 19:16

Sainsbury's jeans. I know, I never would have guessed. But they fit me really well, wash great, and cost like £14. I'm usually a 'get what you pay for' person, but these are great.

Having my nails done with polish and extensions is a bit of a faff but makes me feel glamorous.

Having my brows micro bladed was the best thing I ever did and I won’t ever stop.

I am over 50 and my hair looks brilliant long.

Mcmcmcmc · 29/12/2022 20:11
  • it is really worth it not tweezing my eyebrows in between waxing appointments. My eyebrows look much cleaner if I wait and just do waxing
  • Leave-in hair products make a much bigger difference to how my hair looks than shampoo, conditioner or even masks
  • Using powder in my T-zone really helps me look more polished
  • Having a baby and all the sleep deprivation that ensued aged me 10 years in 1 - but there’s not much I can do about it now except for continuing to look after myself the best I can

Urban decay brown blade is amazing I used the same pencil for 30 years then I saw Mrs hinch unsung one and ordered it.

pastypirate · 29/12/2022 20:32

Aldi shampoo dupes are very good. The one in the orange bottle and the conditioner is amazing we all
Use it in my house and it's 89p!!

Littleguggi · 29/12/2022 21:08

Don't fall for buying things that so called influencers use, what suits others may not suit you.

Don't fall for trends, and if you do don't throw them away as they'll be back 'in' soon enough!

Think twice before buying and think about cost per wear, saying goodbye to fast fashion.

Who wears heels anymore, give me all the trainers and flats! Comfort and practicality all the way.

TheOGCCL · 29/12/2022 21:55

That skinny jeans are often more practical than flattering (basically denim leggings).

That tucking things in is normally more flattering.

That you have to balance your hormones to beat hormonal acne.

That deliberately oversized shirts solve bust gaping.

Hair always grows back.

Agree with this! I have quit heels completely I mean wtf?? Why did we just hurt ourselves?

ModeWeasel · 29/12/2022 22:26

Basics mean you have more actually wearable outfits.

TitInATrance · 29/12/2022 23:14

Long hair suits me even in my 60s. I don’t need to wear makeup but small heels help me look smart in a skirt.

Clothes that can be worn anywhere get the most use.

KillingMeDeftly · 29/12/2022 23:37

Invisalign is totally worth it.

AnnieSnap · 30/12/2022 00:42

I’ve learned that I shouldn’t avoid knee length or above the knee dresses,as they probably suit me more than longer ones despite being 63.

Niftythrifter · 30/12/2022 11:45

That sometimes you find products that suit you better without spending a fortune. I got an M and S foundation that suits me in terms of finish etc for less than £13 and so saving me over £20 on what I was spending on an EL foundation. Admittedly the M and S applies better with a primer compared to the EL one but mixed with a Maybeline primer and it does the job.

True @Niftythrifter one of the best foundations I've found recently is the L'Oréal tinted serum. Usually on offer somewhere for less than a tenner and gives nice light coverage that doesn't look like foundation.

PublicTransport · 30/12/2022 12:31

Accept that I'm two stone heavier and buy new clothes rather than live in things that don't fit or only one baggy-jeans-and sweatshirt combo "until I'm thin"

DesertIslandCondiment · 30/12/2022 13:21

I'm definitely into no high heels. I live in 3 pair of chunky ankle boots. However my step daughter wears high heel knee high boots and it looks good where as I don't think the style would suit me anymore.

ppeatfruit · 30/12/2022 13:31

After "not going grey gracefully" I've been using quite expensive hair colourants that has turned out to be either too dark or too light. (I'd prefer highlights but in the HD they always leave grey roots that isn't what I want) SO, I love essential oils and have found out that the Lemon one is amazing for gentle hair lightening , and it just seems to create highlights without any effort.

Oh and hear hear to the poster saying with fashion go with what suits you also 2 fingers to heels (but in the mud and wet I wear boots with waterproof wedges (living in the muddy country you need them)! I have started to hand wash clothes to stop the semi manmade ones going out of shape. I soak them for a day in tepid softened water (saving electricity) . You don't need to scrub (except underarms) if nec. or rinse excessively.

Shitfather · 30/12/2022 13:36

Glossier cloud paint.
Check Vestiaire and Vinted for high end stuff (and the one that got away item).

I've ditched the lipstick altogether. I'm in my 50s.

Pigtailsandall · 30/12/2022 15:45

Wear your best stuff daily; don't save "nice" clothes for a special occasion.
Get rid of anything that doesn't make you feel great, despite how expensive/branded/whatever it is.

PegasusReturns · 30/12/2022 16:27

Persevering with a decent shampoo has been worthwhile.

Good underwear is essential.

Dior tinted glosses are the only things I can wear on my lips.

this year I’ll probably succumb to lid surgery.

Niftythrifter · 30/12/2022 18:06

That if an item of clothing makes you feel bad about yourself (Weight gain or whatever) then consider ‘resting ‘ it or charity shopping it etc.
