Please help me find a maggot coat

That's what DH calls them, what does he know...

I'm after a long, padded coat. Preferably with an oversized collar or hood. Rather not with fur trim. All the ones I've found look either really cheap school coat material, or just drab.

I'm after glam and thick and luxurious, and it's hard to find in this style of coat. Don't really want a belted one, but happy to be persuaded otherwise.

Megan McKenna had one on, in MasterChef, when they do that slow-mo walk at the beginning, in like a pinky beige, which is almost exactly what I wanted but I can't find a pic of that at all now.

Finally, don't want black. Yes to khaki, nude, grey and navy.

Pic attached is just to give a rough idea, but I think all of those are just so ...meh. The olive one at the end I like best because it's that soft feel matte fabric, which I think makes it more sumptuous, I don't want shiny.

Anyone know of anything?

Thank you! Xx

I imagine standing still might be ok but yeah I walk to work (30 mins each way) and don’t normally get cold so these coats seem a bit much but I haven’t ever worn one to be fair.

You are right, they are suited to cold dry winters like Canada, not mild wet winters like the UK.

The good-quality down ones are way too warm to wear here, and also usually aren’t properly waterproof (soaking wet feathers are not great news). Obviously the cheapy fashion ones are often not particularly warm, because they aren’t made of real down and aren’t designed for really cold climates.

Well all I can say is that ive lived in mine. It is lightweight, warm and water resistant enough to keep me dry in showers. It has a really good deep hood as well. I love it!

I’m not saying there are no nice ones out there! Just that a jacket rated to -25C is not really suited to a standard UK +10C winter day, and that since most of them are just showerproof, you risk completely wrecking them in heavy rain as well (which is obviously also very common in the UK in winter).

I lived in Canada for a couple of years, and had that type of coat (not CG), it worked great there. Warm, lightweight. Didn’t need to be fully waterproof because it mostly snowed, not rained, in winter. I have an unpadded, fully-waterproof raincoat for the UK, and that works much better over here.

@TwinsAndTiramisu look at the raleigh coat on tog24 www.tog24.com/products/raleigh-womens-jacket-washed-black?refSrc=6730247503962&nosto=productpage-nosto-3-copy

no feathers/down but great reviews and 4 colours.

otherwise Roman had some nice ones?

MerylSqueak · 29/12/2022 00:20

I love that tog 24 coat. Thanks.

This is technically everything I'm looking for, so why do I not feel it's glamorous?

Do you think the colour looks a bit washed out/faded?

Because a 'Sausage coat' is not glamorous.

I'm quite sure Arket does the definitive version.

Just Google it.

I love the Rino + Pelle ones - this one is super-maggoty, reversible and comes in loads of colours. I love the graduated stitching too

i was after the full maggot effect and in the end went for a H&M one (full length, down filling) which I mostly wear indoors to save on heating!

Janedoe82 · 29/12/2022 00:49

Holland Cooped have more glam ones

Well a lot of people wear puffer coats - and have recommended them on here - which aren’t really as thick as the ones you might get in Canada/the US. And even the really warm ones that are rated to -25 or whatever assume you’ll be wearing layers. I quite like just wearing a puffer over a thin top as I find wearing lots of layers uncomfortable in winter so a really nice warm coat works well for me.

As for the UK is a standard 10 degrees C in winter….. Even in London the average high for winter months is more like 7/8 and lows of 2. I’m in Scotland, and I can tell you it’s a fair bit colder than 10 here for most of the winter!

Gronkle · 29/12/2022 01:11

I bought a Barbour today in mustard, it is glorious.

Why do people keep insisting that they aren't suitable?! Loads of people in the UK are wearing them atm and they aren't all drenched, sweaty messes.

To be fair, the men I see on the rush hour tube in Canada Goose generally are. I can imagine in Scotland you might have better conditions for them.

I'd say a large proportion of women were wearing them in the part of London I was in last week and everyone looked perfectly fine. Do you tut inwardly if you see anyone wearing anything you deem unsuitable?

BarbaraofSeville · 29/12/2022 07:41

Only looked at the thread to see what maggot was a typo for, but given that I've seen people wearing puffa coats during August heatwaves, I think a lot of people don't actually care if its appropriate to the weather/season.

redferrari · 29/12/2022 09:29

Superdry had a good range of long padded coats

AsCoolAsKimDeal · 29/12/2022 09:38

Rains - waterproof as well as warm

JustAnotherManicNameChange · 28/12/2022 22:44

@TwinsAndTiramisu was it the 2020 green one? From the front it did indeed look great but the back...

Wasn't this one.

It was a matte beigey colour and the best way I can describe it, was the collar was so large it came out over her shoulders laying on to her arms. It looked like big duvet, you know when you see like a really plump duvet and think, oooh I bet that's comfy to snuggle up in. It just looked so casual, but really glam. It was about 6 inches above her ankles.

(To PP, I have an above the knee Canada Goose, and just got rid of my Holland and Cooper as it was completely non breathable. Looked nice but I don't know what they lined it with but it was like wearing a plastic bag, after 10 mins I was peeling it off!)

Haven't RTFT but Mountain Warehouse has one in khaki and another colour I can't remember, with an off-centre fastening and in that matte texture you describe. Last time I looked it was in their sale for £120.

MrsVeryTired · 29/12/2022 14:45

I like this one John Lewis.
I have a similar one, its so cosy, I love it!

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/12/2022 15:02

I got a really nice one in New Look recently. Mid calf, lovely big hood, amazingly cosy. Was £39 in the sale. They're not the most flattering of garments though, I always think "caterpillar".

WithIcePlease · 29/12/2022 15:22

Barbour international do them - ive got a platinum collection black shiny one but they do other colours

Has anyone said Uniqlo? Shower proof and a bit shaped. So less maggoty (love the DH description btw)
