I am plucking up the courage to try a low-impact Zumba class. It's for 'seniors' (over 50 I guess) so is not so intense. Group stuff isn't really my thing, but I want to give it a whirl.

Clothes??? I don't want to splash out on stuff I may not need.

I don't have 'gym' stuff. I have a pair of black leggings but I have very skinny legs and they just look crap!

I have a pair of 'keep fit' trousers from M&S that are years old and are like straight leg joggers in a stretch type fabric.

I assume jeans are out as they are just too tight, but give me some ideas.

Definitely not jeans! Either the leggings or the joggers, with a loose fitting T shirt (support bra underneath). That'll get you through first lesson, and you can see what others are wearing.

I have on ly ever seen people wear leggings at zumba and similar exercise classes. No-one is going to judge you for wearing them.

TokyoSushi · 28/12/2022 08:56

I've been to Zumba weekly for 7 years so have seen all the outfits!

You need leggings ideally or the joggers if not. A t-shirt and a supportive bra.

Remember that nobody will really be looking at you, just enjoying the class!

trader21c · 02/01/2023 17:37

Leggings or joggers with a t shirt are fine enjoy!

lindyloo57 · 02/01/2023 17:41

If you feel your legs look skinny in black legging, try a printed pair with a plain t shirt/ top

dementedpixie · 02/01/2023 17:46

I wear cropped leggings and a sports tshirt
Wear something comfy and wear a sports bra and trainers.

I have been doing Zumba for 10 years and it has led me to lots of different dance classes. I have gone from prematurely aged coach potato to exercise enthusiast with massively improved mood, self esteem, energy and fitness. So, OP it’s a great choice!

Unless you are doing Zumba in Kensington then any leggings and T shirt ate fine. Not jeans because you do need to be flexible. I have been to a wide variety of classes. Some wear fancy workout stuff but the vast majority wear standard leggings and an old T shirt.

Honestly, anything you can move and feel comfortable in - stretchy leggings and a sports bra deffo, plus anything else you want. You will get hot, hair up - no one will care what you are wearing or what you look like. Listen to the music and enjoy!

simplefree · 02/01/2023 18:24

The zumba class I go to is a lot of fun and full of the friendliest bunch - all ages, fitness level, and even men!
Wear something comfortable and that won’t make you too hot.
Gym trainers too.
Enjoy!

simplefree · 02/01/2023 18:26

I’ve seen people in tracksuit bottoms but that might get too hot!

Don’t forget a water bottle!

Troublewithtribbles · 02/01/2023 19:38

Zumba & Zumba Gold instructor here. First don’t worry, I find that participants are usually really welcoming to newbies, supportive of each other and non judgemental especially so in Gold. Eyes are on the instructor to follow the moves and not each other. Be comfortable, wear a supportive sports bra, even for low impact and supportive sports trainers rather than fashion ones. Leggings that stay up and are bend over proof and a tee shirt / vest top to start with are ideal. You will probably get hot. Take water and most of all enjoy!

NeedWineNow · 02/01/2023 19:45

I do Zumba Gold in our village in a lovely friendly group. We all usually wear leggings and a t-shirt or sports vest but really wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I wouldn't wear jeans though. Agree that a supportive sports bra is a must.

Most importantly, have fun!

Diegofrompennyburn · 03/01/2023 07:58

How did it go, OP?

rookiemere · 03/01/2023 08:02

Recently started going myself and sometimes I go straight from work so don't have time to change to full gym gear. It's fine in stretchy trousers and casual trainers, but if you're generously endowed like me you need a sports bra.

How did it go, OP?

Ah, thanks for asking.

Classes don't start till next week.

I've bought some new leggings and a baggy-ish T shirt :)

Thanks @Troublewithtribbles

Yay! The biggest thing is to be comfortable and to enjoy. Dance fitness is my happy space. It’s as much about my mental health as my physical. There is something life affirming and fundamental about movement and music. Some time for me, just me as well! I love the social side too and through classes have met some fab people who have so enriched my life! Hope it brings you al this!
