Starting a new thread for the new year. I really must do better. Pretty sure I am in need of nothing after my 2022 spending spree.

Ironically I think this board sets me off a bit.

I’m better with a blanket no spend but how dull. Still thinking about my ‘rules’, eg set a budget or an item limit.

I need to avoid the sales as many mistakes happen there.

All welcome who want to cut down for environmental or ethical or financial reasons, or simply the satisfaction of buying second hand, or the ease of getting dressed when you have less stuff.

I can recommend Lauren Bravo’s book How To Break Up With Fast Fashion.

Its a bit like eating meat, if we all collectively did it a bit less, the world would be a better place.

I e been trying to unsubscribe from clothing related emails, I get so many!

I bought 2 dresses and a new waterproof coat in the sale. Definitely needed the coat after getting soaked and freezing in a lightweight waterproof.

Nothing else for me until summer at least. Feels good to have some control.

Am also doing dry January so at certain times I feel like all the joy has been sucked out of my life but I’m trying to be positive🤣🤣

roselune · 05/01/2023 18:11

I'm doing ok so far, no clothing purchases. I've been reorganising my wardrobe and feeling quite horrified about the amount of clothes I bought in 2022!

I did treat myself to a couple of sterling silver rings on Monday because I've been missing wearing more jewellery (got out of the habit during WFH in covid times), and those have arrived and are lovely.

Pigtailsandall · 05/01/2023 18:14

@Doyouthinktheyknow I'm doing a sugar-free January combined with the strict low-buy rules. Husband suggested a dry Jan too, the masochistic bastard😬

Mercedesbenz2022 · 05/01/2023 18:27

Well I have bought 3 things
a pair of cream suede boots in a sale that I have been looking for for about 2yrs so that was fate

plus a halter neck silky top which will be ok for both holidays and going out ( madly justifying the purchase )

and a golden orange shirt hmm probably because I’m so sick of grey and navy

so not great , but the thread is making me pay more attention to what I’m buying

also trying to buy for the life I have not the one I want

Good luck everyone

What are we doing to ourselves! The most miserable month of the year too🤯🤣

DH is all up for dry January but he is blooming well retired so no work stress there! I’m already missing my Friday night glass of wine🤣

TheOGCCL · 05/01/2023 22:08

Day 4 and I haven't bought anything, though its tempered by the fact I bought a few things that are yet to arrive at the very end of 2022.

I'm hoping it's about habit and once a good bit of time goes past, it will be a) more meaningful not to break and b) easier not to.

I'm in a similar position and have refrained from looking at my favourite online shops. I tend to obsess about clothes when I see them and often order with the intention of returning anyway and then of course like them when they arrive. Its ok when its a top but not ok when its two coats!

I 'think' I received my last package yesterday - a pair of trousers from Cos which I bought as they were the last pair in my size and thought I'd return - but I like them so they have gone into wardrobe!

I bought a hair product recommended on here which is due for delivery tomorrow. After that I hope I won't see the delivery guys for a long time!

NegroniLover · 05/01/2023 23:10

I think I'm.going to join in if that's OK? I seem to go through phases of buying v little & then going a bit mad. I bought lots in 2022 & in particular around Nov/ Dec. And mostly dressier going out clothes. We do go out a lot & I def wear them & I adore knowing I have a fab outfit just waiting to be worn but it's everyday & work clothes I now need to focus on & fight the urge to but another velvet kimono or wool Cape!

I've also stopped drinking & I've signed yo to a healthy living programme. I aim.ti lose between 1 5 & 2 stones thus year
I have a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes from sezane, whistles, maje etc that I've never worn as I got too fat.
I'm really excited to start wearing then all! And I'm determined that this is the year.
I don't buy lots of makeup & I have tons of perfume.
I was doing great but today I crumbled & bought a bag I've been watching- it was over 50% off & I'll use it for years

EasterIssland · 05/01/2023 23:15

Joining you. Hopefully my anxiety that makes me buy impulsively can be under control
I have got enough beauty products from two calendar so hopefully don’t have to buy much.
im not too keen on buying clothes but I tend to buy every now and then. So hopefully I can control it

IndianSummer78 · 06/01/2023 05:15

Fell off the wagon already. Had to buy something on Amazon. That under £10 item cost me £90 due to the notebook, tights, skirt and top I got tempted into buying. The notebook will get used, the outfit is the type of thing I'll live and die in and under £100 is quite restrained for me so I can't get too bothered by it. If I didn't need to buy the first thing I wouldn't have seen the other things so hopefully I can get back on track.

StealingYourWiFi · 06/01/2023 11:18

Still a no spend month! I had surgery yesterday so have a couple weeks off work. Trying to avoid social media (which triggers my impulse buying!) but also difficult when you have lots of spare time on your hands at home.

If I get desperate I do have an Amazon voucher I can use but honestly there’s nothing I NEED.

MsDastardley · 06/01/2023 14:14

I was feeling quite smug as not bought anything this month, then realised it's on 6th January. The test for me will be from the 10th, which is when my credit card statement is issued. I do pay it off in full, but as soon as it resets I think it's time to starting spending again.

To be honest, I'm just not feeling it at the moment anyway, which is good. I have got so much stuff that I would be duplicating things which I don't want to do. So nothing for the time being, then one in one out for basic stuff.

I might be singing a different tune when new season clothes start coming out though. I'm very sad, I get so excited when I get a new season notification.

Have a lovely no spend weekend everyone

Work2live · 06/01/2023 15:37

Joining!

I want to buy as few clothes and shoes as possible this year. I have SO MUCH STUFF and I bought loads last year. I must’ve spent around £1k on clothes and shoes, possibly more. It’s not happening this year.

I’m on a complete spending ban until April (I really don’t need any new winter stuff at all) when I might allow myself to buy one or two nice pieces for summer.

I’ve unsubscribed from a few fashion brands that were emailing me about sales. I’ve also deleted the asos app and the Klarna app from my phone!

Tiddlywinkly · 06/01/2023 15:51

Joining! My weaknesses are clothes and books. I'm determined to try 'shopping my wardrobe' (I've read up on a few articles to get some tips) and not buy any books for a good few months. I'm aiming for Low Buy. Also doing dry January!

I've purchased 2 99p books on Kindle 🙄, but I've returned 2 parcels of clothes that I ordered in the sales.

Coconut80 · 06/01/2023 16:11

Joining please, aiming for low spend. I need to avoid eBay, I got the annual review and I had purchased 181 and sold only 76. I am seduced by the low prices and the pieces being second hand. I have tonnes of makeup and beauty products thanks to the John Lewis and markies advent calendar so no need to buy these.
I have recently gutted my wardrobe when I got new furniture so hopefully I am wearing everything I have.
I've ordered new pants and socks from marks and after it arrives I'm aiming for no spend.
Hopefully this thread will keep me accountable. Good luck ladies xx

Alienbigcat45 · 25/12/2022 00:16

Count me in too. I keep buying stuff for a lifestyle I don't lead - 1970s NYC disco diva maybe Bianca Jäger - the sad reality is I'm middle aged with a very unglamorous life.

Ah yes.....this is my problem!

DashboardConfessional · 06/01/2023 18:57

Ok, the bag I wanted with my Christmas bonus went down to £77 so I bought it but now I am Not Buying Anything Else.

moimichme · 06/01/2023 20:02

So far, staying strong. I've been doing this for a wee while now and it seems to be getting a bit easier over time. I felt tempted by sales but didn't have time to browse (very busy this week at work) and there's nothing so far on my radar that I need. Let's hope I don't do any boredom scrolling this weekend, and I should be OK!

Icanneverthinkofausername · 07/01/2023 09:08

I have a little list of things im allowed to buy, trying to resist the impulse purchases and buy better quality.
Was very proud of myself for not getting the shirt and cardy I saw yesterday. I was thinking I might keep a list of all the things I don't buy to see how much I save?

FirstTimeMum072022 · 07/01/2023 09:09

I have shockingly little clothes since I was pregnant/recovering most of 2022 2020 2021 I worked from home and no social life really. I'm going to buy some bits next week but that needs to be considered outfits that I know I'll wear a lot, nothing oh but it's only a fiver, nope.

NeedWineNow · 07/01/2023 10:24

I'm pleased to report that the Onjenu skirt that I mentioned up thread arrived yesterday and I am very happy with it. Hangs beautifully and will be lovely now with boots and thick jumpers but equally in the summer with flats/sandals and a t-shirt. I know from experience that it will be a great travel piece as Onjenu dresses and skirts just don't crease.

Avon parcel with essentials also arrived yesterday with some perfume samples included so might treat myself to an inexpensive fragrance as I'm getting low.

just waiting for my travel bag to arrive now and then that's it. Have got a bag ready for the charity shop when that reopens on Monday and am intending to add to that over the weekend as I need to go through my scarves and pashminas of which I have far too many.

Wiennetta · 07/01/2023 11:08

Checking in! Got through the first week of Jan - and the hundreds of sale emails - without being tempted. I just kept saying to myself I do not need anything. Also sorted out a pile of stuff that I will sell on eBay or Vinted.

I’ve decided to make two lists - a wish list of things I really want/need. There are a couple of gaps in my wardrobe that I could fill and I don’t mind buying something that’ll get used a lot. But I want to stop the impulse buying. So this’ll be a way to hopefully encourage me to think about what I buy before I get anything.

I’m also making a list of clothes, shoes etc that I buy in 2023. Hopefully this’ll keep me accountable and I’ll look at it before I buy anything else!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/01/2023 13:10

I've given two bags full to the charity shop. Have bought a couple of things but two of them were accessories which I should be able to use for a very long time, and one was a very basic skirt that I ought to get a lot of use out of.

lindyloo57 · 07/01/2023 15:41

I did say I wasn't going to buy any cosmetics, was in marks and brought a mini hair gift set, hairspray and a balm, only £6. and I will use it when on holiday , picking up my order from next that's from before Christmas in the sale, a mint velvet dress and a sequin bomber jacket, if I keep them I will pay with my Christmas money. There is a john lewis order to pick up too, two pairs of sale jeans and a shirt again if I keep, only if I love them, they will be Christmas present.

Pigtailsandall · 07/01/2023 16:46

A parcel arrived for my husband from Rapanui. He was in desperate need of t-shirts and got a few in the sale. I got a black scoop neck t-shirt too, which was on my wishlist above.

I put my old one to textile recycling before Christmas because it was just tatty. It's a purchase I can't really get too excited about, but it's something I wear probably once a week so very necessary. Two items down and it's only the 7th. At least this was on my actual shopping list
