A nice coat that will last years

I'm looking for a nice winter coat that will hopefully be something that lasts years and years. My criteria is:

Warm
Waterproof
Has a hood
Covers my bum
Smart enough that it doesn't look like I'm going fell walking

I've got some Seasalt coats on my Vinted favorites lists, they look to tick the boxes although not the height of style. Any other brands people would recommend?

Sizing is pretty standard I think. I'm a size 12 and have a 38 in that one. It's quite snug, but as it's padded, I didn't want it to look too "big" iyswim, I can still fit a thick jumper under it. I have a size 40 waterproof (their Thelma coat), which is definitely more roomy, I can fit a thick jumper and a padded gilet under it.

Barbour will last you years. Loads in vinted but house of Fraser has them on sale.

Stutterheim are the absolute best. :)

I love that but I've never heard of Griggs is it legit?

Griggs are definitely legit. They’re in St Austell, Cornwall. I’ve purchased Aigle wellies from them twice. Delivery is Royal Mail tracked 48 hours (barring postal workers strikes)

Have you tried Tog24? Lovely coats

NotMeekNotObedient · 27/12/2022 19:29

Try Helly Hansen, they do a nice trench style.

I’m an average size 16 but had to go up to a size 20 in my Didrikson raincoat. It was too tight for my arms. (I don’t own anything else in thst size) But the one I have is a light raincoat so probably designed to wear over thinner Spring/Summer clothes. Also as they are a Scandinavian brand, they are designed for taller wearers, so if you are shorter, you might find the arms too long.
I’m very tempted to treat myself to a heavier Didrikson coat for colder days as the quality is excellent. No wet shoulders from where my bag touches the fabric like on with other raincoats.

I got the Didriksons Mea parka which you can get in Blacks or Go Outdoors. It's waterproof and lovely and warm. I preferred this one as it has built in pockets rather than pockets which sit on top of the coat. That gives it a slimmer silhouette I think. It suited me better anyway.

I have three Landsend Squall coats. A lighter weight parka one which I wear mostly walking the dog. Also have same style in a warmer weighting (only wear when v cold) and a Stadium length one which is perfect for standing pitchside watching the darling teens play football or wandering around Christmas markets etc I'm 5'6" so comes to mid calf on me
You can probably get more stylish coats but the wind/waterproofing on the squall range is amazing.
Nice colours as I hate boring black - I have green, blue and plum

I've ordered the Barbour one, will report back when it arrives. Thanks everyone :)

The Barbour one looks lovely.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/12/2022 19:27

So I took a punt on the Barbour coat in a size 18 as I do like to wear a jumper under and layer up. It arrived today and it's lovely and the fit is nice too. Shouldn't take long to test its waterproof credentials with the forecast over the next week.

Thank you S&B that's a mission accomplished!

I'm so pleased. Enjoy your coat.

It’s a bit over but you’d get 10% if you sigh up to the newsletter; this is a high spec waterproof, longer length down-filled coat that i do not need but do like to drool over

Tog24 long waterproof duckdown coat

The grey is nice!

I already went with the Barbour that was suggested on page 1. I can report after a few days battling the Manchester weather that it is completely waterproof, something I was worried about as its so incredibly lightweight and the fabric is so soft!
