What pyjamas do elderly women wear?

Haveahappyholiday · 17/12/2022 19:12

My dm is 80 and has never worn pyjamas! She always wears a traditional nightie. She’s been freezing in bed recently and is finally considering a pair.

She doesn’t like the look of fleecy pyjamas with a tight leg like younger people might wear. I can’t see her wearing the checked shirt with buttons style as they have to be easy to get on and off. I looked at some today but the legs were long and flared so I would probably need to take them up for her.

Any tips? And where would I get them from?

Brushed cotton ?

MMBaranova · 17/12/2022 19:15

My grandmother is a Cyberjammies fan.

Athenen0ctua · 17/12/2022 19:16

DGM is 88. She only wears cotton pyjamas, this time of year flannel bottoms with a long sleeve jersey top.

Suzi888 · 17/12/2022 19:16

M&S, Asda? My DM loves them. She doesn’t like high fashion, new fangled stuff. Wants a standard length, not long, not fancy, just warm. She purchased a lovely set from Tesco- I know people will knock it!

isladeltesoro · 17/12/2022 19:16

Not pyjamas. Traditional nightie and bed jacket. If she can't manage bedsocks then extra blankets over the bottom half of the bed and tucked in to keep legs warm.

Quveas · 17/12/2022 19:21

65 here. I don't think pyjamas do much for combating the kind of cold many of us have - I'm arthritic. My godsend? Sherpa fleece fitted sheet, brushed cotton/ flannelette sheet above, light weight duvet, topped with light quilt. I am as warm at night as in summer. Its the right layers, rather than heavy ones. This cold snap, and I'm high up in the North. And I mean HIGH, not just north. That keeps me warm with no heating on!

Dodie66 · 17/12/2022 19:21

I don’t like pyjamas . I wear a Nighty, jacket and bed socks. Keep feet warm and your legs are warm, a nice fleecy bed jacket too

Haveahappyholiday · 17/12/2022 19:21

She said she was wearing a nightie and bed jacket. She has bed socks but I’m not sure if she can use them.

My DM is in her 80s and wears M&S men’s PJs (joggers and t-shirt style) as she likes the longer tops and darker colours.

user2859453 · 17/12/2022 19:24

Marks and Spencer sell just bottoms, maybe get a couple of bottoms to wear with the nighty, socks and jacket, they are on offer at the moment.

borntobequiet · 17/12/2022 19:29

Not quite as old (nearly 70) but I wear an M&S thermal long sleeved vest in bed with long johns if it’s particularly cold. Cashmere socks unless I have a hot water bottle.
I find most styles of pyjama or nightdress uncomfortable, either too loose and flappy or constricting. I hate buttons. The thermals work very well for me.

borntobequiet · 17/12/2022 19:30

Oh and my house is very very cold.

orangetriangle · 17/12/2022 19:40

my mum is 80 and only wears nighties but brussed cotton long sleeve ones in winter with a bed jacket over we managed to convince her last few years to wear the warmer ones she doesnt really like pjs think it's an old people thing

Stravaig · 17/12/2022 19:59

What about some thermal leggings and maybe also a vest to go under her nighties? Might be a more gradual change, if she could manage them? Dilling do some great stretchy merino ones at a reasonable price, so cosy and comfy!

Britinme · 17/12/2022 20:02

I'm 72 and I hate wearing pyjamas. I wear a long T shirt and if my feet are cold I wear bedsocks. I find pyjama bottoms constricting and uncomfortable.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/12/2022 20:04

Would she be better with an electric blanket? In this weather I wouldn't be without mine for a fortune.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 17/12/2022 20:05

Damart thermal nighties are lovely and they do pyjamas too.
Otherwise look for brushed cotton or flanelette nighties, I have 2 and they’re so soft and warm.

MrsDrudge · 17/12/2022 20:08

I’m 64 and always freezing in bed. Most comfortable and warm PJs imo are Tu at Sainsburys. Cheap and cheerful, warm, plenty of choice and a good selection of easy on and off styles with no buttons or fastenings . Sometimes the fabric patterns and designs are a bit childish but that doesn’t really bother me.

Valkirie · 17/12/2022 20:08

Something like this? www.toa.st/products/ada-soft-double-cotton-pyjamas-dusty-pink

Hush have some brushed cotton PJs in the sale too: www.hush-uk.com/liv-cotton-flannel-pyjama-set-koi-carp-navy--multi/000778-4107.html

greenhousegal · 17/12/2022 20:09

Buy her an electric blanket. Safe as houses these days and you just can't beat them. Very inexpensive to run. She keeps the nightie, happy mum.

Baconand · 17/12/2022 20:12

My grandma wears yoga pants or joggers and long sleeved stretchy tshirts (sized up). She is late 90’s although now she’s in a care home she is less cold as they heat it to a zillion degrees

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 17/12/2022 20:12

I'd get her a nightie in warmer material, and some brushed cotton sheets.

Haveahappyholiday · 17/12/2022 20:18

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about thermals. She could wear them with the nightie possibly.

We have had the electric blanket conversation and she is not keen for safety reasons even though I am trying to convince her!

I buy separates instead of a set. I don’t like baggy legs as they ride up and annoy me. Also don’t like the top too long as it creases up underneath me and that annoys me too. Flannelette legs are nice with a long sleeve cotton top

Doliveira · 17/12/2022 21:13

Huge increase of warmth in bed in our house because we bought Dunelm teddy bed linen. It is SO MUCH warmer than even the highest quality brushed cotton.

I think this is a better step than pyjamas.
