What pyjamas do elderly women wear?

Haveahappyholiday · 17/12/2022 19:12

My dm is 80 and has never worn pyjamas! She always wears a traditional nightie. She’s been freezing in bed recently and is finally considering a pair.

She doesn’t like the look of fleecy pyjamas with a tight leg like younger people might wear. I can’t see her wearing the checked shirt with buttons style as they have to be easy to get on and off. I looked at some today but the legs were long and flared so I would probably need to take them up for her.

Any tips? And where would I get them from?

Haha this just came up on my feed and it’s still relevant to me as I never did manage to get a pair of pyjamas my mother would wear. I’ll try again this winter!

I recommend Cyberjammies. On their website, they have a 1-5 rating and a suitable and not suitable for so for example a number 5 could be suitable for colder mornings. My explanation is probably rubbish because I’m not good at explaining things but the website should explain more

They only go up to age 16. How petite is your DM?

Ha ha ha my Mum wears age 11 boys jeans. This year she returned some age 12-13 boys shorts as they were too big.

She five feet tall if she really stretches and is a shoe size two.

Haveahappyholiday · 24/10/2023 22:07

My mother will 100% not use an electric blanket and can not be persuaded. (I love mine and have it on now.)

I got her a pair of pyjamas from Next which she didn’t like so in the end I got her a thermal nightie from Damart which she does wear. There are some great recommendations so I will try again before it gets too cold and see if we can get some which suit.

Pyjama bottoms are annoying because when you turn over in bed they don't and you end up garrotting your own crotch. A nightie is better, with bed socks and an extra blanket over the bottom of the bed.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/10/2023 22:12

How do people not get tangled up in nighties out of interest? Short ones seem to end up gathered under my armpits, long ones just get tangled round and round me.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/10/2023 22:14

I used to get my mum the thermal PJs from Damart .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/10/2023 22:18

I definitely think PJs are better for the elderly than a long nightdress which has risks of tripling and falling .

LovelyGreenCushions · 24/10/2023 22:20

hanro if she can afford them
sizing is generous

NotMeNoNo · 24/10/2023 22:22

My mum really loves the soft touch pyjamas from Peacocks. They look like traditional button up pyjamas but the material is quite soft and warm.

Age 16 in Next is not a small size as long as you aren't tall. I'm a twelve and five foot two and I wear can Next girls clothes for work.

GreenVelvetCushions · 25/10/2023 07:51

Electric blanket?

CambridgeLass · 25/10/2023 07:54

I dislike pj’s in winter as my back gets cold. I wear a knee length, long sleeved tshirt nightie and pj bottoms and socks if its too cold.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 25/10/2023 08:29

Mid 60's and I sleep naked and prefer a cold bedroom. I have a wool duvet which is light and warm so problem solved.

Not pyjamas. Traditional nightie and bed jacket. If she can't manage bedsocks then extra blankets over the bottom half of the bed and tucked in to keep legs warm.

This sounds a better idea

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 25/10/2023 10:35

I changed my so called all weather duvet that was 10 years old (two duvets that could be used single or together) for a lower tog (really) White company duvet and it's much, much warmer. I only use it September to April. This one, I think it was

Perfect Everyday Duck Down Duvet - 10.5 tog,

Any1Else · 25/10/2023 10:37

I don’t think it’s surprising that a ten year old duvet would have lost much of its substance, @marmaladeandpeanutbutter.

But wool is definitely best!

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/10/2023 10:38

I’ve always worn brushed cotton, expect I will when I’m ancient.

Yeah - the OP was talking about her mum in her 80s. Mid-60s isn't exactly elderly !

She’s small but so is the OPs mum as she says she had to take up some pyjamas for her mum.

Both Next and M&S go up to age 16 in their kids pyjamas and they are really big. As are actual 16 year old children! My mum’s new fairy pyjamas are age 13.

borntobequiet · 25/10/2023 14:47

It is, though. The current accepted definition of “elderly” is 65 or over.

I’m 70 and have no issue with the factual terms “elderly” and “old”. They’re not derogatory.

StarlightLady · 25/10/2023 17:22

Sorry OP, but elderly women are not a herd. What one person might wear is not what another might wear. It's one for the potential wearer.

Squirrelsbite · 25/10/2023 17:30

My DMil (90) had hers from Bon marche
or primark

Don't be sorry. She probably knows that.

But people in their eighties probably do have some of the same issues due to their age that younger people won't have. Which is likely why the OP mentioned these in her opening post.

StarlightLady · 25/10/2023 17:42

@MetalFences - Thank you. I was just trying to emphasise that I wasn't trying to be clever. But it's also important to remember that the so called elderly of today, grew up with Sgt Pepper, Purple Haze and do not necessarily see themselves or their style as elderly. Of course there are practical issues though.

starfishmummy · 25/10/2023 17:44

Happyher · 17/12/2022 20:21

I buy separates instead of a set. I don’t like baggy legs as they ride up and annoy me. Also don’t like the top too long as it creases up underneath me and that annoys me too. Flannelette legs are nice with a long sleeve cotton top

I'm the opposite. I buy the separate pj trousers and wear them under my nighties as I like a longer top to avoid a gap round my middle. (I'm a fidgeter). I do agree about the pj trousers not being baggy though.

And @Haveahappyholiday maybe some nice bedsocks too!
