What pyjamas do elderly women wear?

Haveahappyholiday · 17/12/2022 19:12

My dm is 80 and has never worn pyjamas! She always wears a traditional nightie. She’s been freezing in bed recently and is finally considering a pair.

She doesn’t like the look of fleecy pyjamas with a tight leg like younger people might wear. I can’t see her wearing the checked shirt with buttons style as they have to be easy to get on and off. I looked at some today but the legs were long and flared so I would probably need to take them up for her.

Any tips? And where would I get them from?

M&S, Primark, Next, TU all do decent pyjamas. I get the bottoms in Primark and then get vests or tops from M&S or Next.

My mum wears M&S pyjamas.

Zombie pyjanma thread

Ha! @Harebell is the guilty party.

But at least she doesn’t appear to be advertising anything, which seems to be the fashionable reason for reviving an old thread. Hmm

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/10/2023 11:28

I’m not elderly, just a person who really feels the cold, and have found this zombie thread a very useful read - thanks for reviving it!

My contribution is another vote for brushed cotton bedding. We also have a big throw over the bottom of the bed. I can’t stand actual pyjamas for sleeping in, only as “loungewear” so for me it’s the bed itself that needs to be as cosy as possible.

I have some fab pjs from primark.

they are long legged, and loose so no tight legs
long sleeves, and button up
but because the fabric is soft to the touch (really lovely soft to the touch) and slightly stretchy, they go on like a T shirt, no need to undo buttons.

No idea what they are made of but they feel lovely and are warm.
They are long though, so they may need taking up

steppemum · 24/10/2023 12:22

Oh bugger missed the zombie bit

Any1Else · 24/10/2023 12:23

Doesn’t matter - it’s useful for this Winter, too!

Haveahappyholiday · 24/10/2023 12:27

Haha this just came up on my feed and it’s still relevant to me as I never did manage to get a pair of pyjamas my mother would wear. I’ll try again this winter!

Did you not even persuade her to a wool duvet, @Haveahappyholiday? Sad

SirVixofVixHall · 24/10/2023 12:29

Also, does she have an electric blanket ? That helps, or a fleecy wool under blanket.

Gettingbysomehow · 24/10/2023 12:33

Try cotton traders, they do nightwear for all ages.

SunnySomer · 24/10/2023 12:36

My mum (79, always cold), would wear this kind of thing https://www.calida.com/en-GB/p/family-amp-friends-pyjama-with-cuff-p-41453-339/. She has 13.5 tog duvet and sometimes an extra blanket. I believe she wears socks to go to bed which she kicks off during the night. She reckons this combination keeps her cosy through winter.
They are expensive but extremely warm and very durable (I’ve had a pair for 15 years which a still like new). She likes the stretchy bottoms. In their page of warming nightwear, they also have nighties https://www.calida.com/en-GB/Women/Sleepwear/Warming-nightwear/

Lands end have a good range of PJs, with petite sizes if excessive leg length is an issue, some are mix and match.

Wishiwasatailor · 24/10/2023 12:39

Sainsbury’s did some brushed cotton loose pyjama bottom but with an elasticated leg band which are perfect for avoiding trips paired with some slipper socks? Or a heated under sheet?

GladysHeeler · 24/10/2023 13:08

My mother is 79 and also never wore pyjamas. The last time she came to stay she forgot her nightdress and ended up borrowing my DD's M&S children's pyjamas with dinosaurs on.

She loved wearing them, not how they looked but how they kept her warm and is a full convert. Now she's bought her own pyjamas from next with fairies on.

Oh, she loves them. Especially after the dinosaur ones.

FLOrenze · 24/10/2023 20:11

Have you thought about an electric blanket that you can keep on all night. Mine lasts for 9 hours and I have it on the lowest setting. It hardly uses any electricity.

Pyjama bottoms, vest and nightie or pyjama top over them. Socks.

YourWinter · 24/10/2023 20:38

I’m in my late 60s and prefer satin or equally slippery pj trousers as I find it really hard to turn over in bed in cotton, especially brushed cotton, or jersey pjs. And I really hate pj tops with buttons.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 24/10/2023 20:51

I work with older people in a hospital setting. Most women just have jersey pj’s, the sort you would buy from M&S or a supermarket. Most avoid twee pictures but I’ve seen a few random designs!

Nighties are uncomfortable for all ages, they rumple and cause skin indents where the fabric gathers which can be a real problem for older people.

From my experience, older people like layers. So vests underneath and cardigans over the top. Avoid small buttons which can be tricky as you get older.

They only go up to age 16. How petite is your DM?
