The Body Shop has discontinued my favourite vitamin e one and everything else I've tried makes them worse. Recommendations please.

For day to day I use the Nuxe honey one.

When my lips are dry and sore, I use Burts Bees (also the honey one).

Anything that's too petroleum jelly ish just sits on top, and cream style balms seem to dry me out more.

Carmex is the only one which helps my lips when they're really bad. I think it's the camphor in it. Vaseline does nothing for my lips

I just saw something where they tested a load of different lip balms for effectiveness and Burt’s Bees did come out on top.

It really is the best. I find some just make my lips worse and so I need to keep using it over and over. With this one, I find it sorts the problem and then lets me get back to normal (not using it) quickly.

KangarooKenny · 17/12/2022 15:13

The Liz Earle one.

MandarinCat · 17/12/2022 15:19

The nivea stick ones are good. You can get tinted ones too

CaveMum · 17/12/2022 15:25

Carmex all the way! I have a recurring crack in my lip (happens every few months in the same spot ever since I had DS almost 6 years ago!) and without Carmex it splits further, bleeds and takes ages to heal. If I get the Carmex on it (and keep reapplying) as soon as it starts feeling tender it prevents the bad split and it heals up quickly.

Revolution do lip sleeping masks which are excellent and only about a fiver. I use them throughout the day as lip balms. These and the nuxe balm in a pot are the only things I've ever found to sort out my sore and cracked lips.

I've never found anything as good as lansinoh when my lips are really dry and it lasts for ever!

I use this, started when I took accurate. I have a tube in the house, in my bag, in the car….

Sparkletastic · 18/12/2022 08:21

Burt's Bees Intensive Overnight. I thought Reve de Miel was unbeatable but this manages it. The ceramides just seem to work so well.

sageandrosemary · 18/12/2022 08:21

Nuxe

Divebar2021 · 18/12/2022 08:28

i don’t know how anyone can use a petroleum based lip product and not end up drier than they were to begin with. They’re awful on my lips. My friend bought me Baume de Rose from By Terry which is great but ££££. I don’t drink enough water in the cold weather plus the central heating makes mine awful.

Nancywhiskey · 18/12/2022 08:46

Vaseline..anthing else just drys my lips

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/12/2022 09:49

I bought a Burt's Bees lipsalve yesterday based on all the recommendations, because it would be a lot cheaper than buying the 8 hour cream ones. But it is rubbish! My lips would be a cracked mess if I relied on that.

Seriously, anyone who thinks the Burt's Bees ones are good should try 8 hour cream or a tube of Lansinoh. So much better.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 18/12/2022 10:10

I always laugh when I read the lip balm threads. One comes along every couple of weeks, almost every single person swears by a different product. Petroleum based works for some people, lanolin for others.

The thing they all have in common is providing an occlusive barrier on the skin. That's what keeps your lips soft. Biting the skin, repeatedly running your tongue over your lips, cold weather and a combination of all 3 is what makes them chapped and sore. You need to keep a layer of product on continuously to avoid that, which of course, noone really bothers to do.

My experience is that they're all a bit meh. Some stay on for longer (like Nuxe and OKeefes) but aren't as 'slippy' to apply. Some feel nice to apply ( Nivea, Vaseline etc) but need virtual constant reapplying.

My personal favourite because it sits ( for me) in the space between nice-to-apply and lasting, is Lanolips.

In the end, they all do the job.

Anjelika · 18/12/2022 11:49

@LadyOfTheCanyon you're so right. I ran around in search of a Blistex one the other week that everyone was raving about. I bought it and it does less than nothing for my lips. I have the Dr Lipp one which is like nipple cream I think and that is good for me. I might just buy a tube of Lansinoh next time though. The 8 hour one is good for me too.

JustCakeInDrag · 18/12/2022 11:55

Eight-hour cream contains both petroleum and lanolin so probably covers all bases for many people. I just can’t get on with it. I read it about it so often in magazines and thought of it as a ‘proper’ grown-up product but when I tried it I couldn’t handle the smell and the texture. Do you remember when Catherine Zeta-Jones was a brand ambassador for Elizabeth Arden and declared that she put it on her baby’s nappy rash?!

Psychonabike · 18/12/2022 11:55

This is really good, for seriously chapped lips when you've been viral/ full of lurgy.

The Eucerin acute lip balm is amazing.

I am allergic to lanolin but use my leftover lanolin-free nipple balm (Weleda) for really dry lips and hands and it's great

Oh how strange! That's my absolute favourite and I find it really works. Sorry it wasn't any good for you :(

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 18/12/2022 20:53

@LadyOfTheCanyon Is right. I always think of lip balm as protection for the lips rather than actually healing. Like putting on a coat for your lips. It’s always the last thing I do before I leave the house, I go for wee then put lipbalm on.

If I ever feel I need extra help I just put on cerave moisturising lotion first.

I like lanolips too - the lemon aid one is my favourite - it smells so nice. I like their tinted spf ones in the summer.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/12/2022 21:02

Don't be sorry, I enjoy trying random items recommended on Mumsnet - I'm probably going to try the Blistex next.

Burts Bees ultra conditioning lip balm. By far the best (IMO!!)

I second this 100%
