Do you think people are wearing jeans a lot less now?

I can't put my finger on it but there seem to be less people wearing them, at least where I am. I see tons still in the shops/online but not so much out there in the wilds.
I see more sweatpants, leggings, dresses than jeans now, on the whole, kind of a first in my lifetime.

Live in jeans have done for years I can hide in them baggy with belt.

SheWoreYellow · 10/12/2022 13:15

Around here the younger ones aren’t wearing them at all, and there are more of them out in town etc. So it seems like no one at all is wearing them.
40 year olds still wearing them a fair bit.

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 13:16

There's definitely a huge drop off compared to the past I think.

Yep the explosion in active wear and a few lock downs- throw in the kardashian influence and most people live in work out leggings.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/12/2022 13:18

Nearly 60 and I’ve only ever found one pair that seem to have been made to fit a woman’s body. much more comfortable in other things.

talomon · 10/12/2022 13:21

I think so. Personally I have stopped wearing jeans after the pandemic. They are too restrictive and uncomfortable, and as skinny jeans have got out of fashion I only bought one straight pair that I wear very occasionally.

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 13:24

What are your alternatives? I like loose combats and cords atm. I used to love dresses but can't stand the designs right now, and the sleeves are always too puffy/oddly shaped/cold.

Yes definitely less. I see hardly anyone wearing jeans. Though in the city centre of an evening, so the going out crowd, there's always large groups of over 30s women wearing black skinny jeans and mid length straightened hair. It's like a uniform.

I haven't seen workout leggings as leisurewear since end of lockdown. Ive only seen people wear them who are obviously on their way to or from exercise. Embarrassing if they're asked why they're wearing them if they don't do exercise 😀

Lots of ordinary black leggings and leisure trainers though.

Getdone · 10/12/2022 13:27

They've become difficult 😆 Jeans used to be go anywhere, wear with anything, dress up or down. No I've learned skinnies are done (and never suited me anyway) but while leg ones are either very casual, ripped and worn looking or quute formal and I've no idea what rip or shoes to put with them.

I'm going to the pub to watch football tonight. I've done a ridiculous amount of "thinking" over what to wear 😆

Getdone · 10/12/2022 13:28

Omg so many typos, I hope it makes some sort of sense!

RaraRachael · 10/12/2022 13:29

I still wear them as I can't think what else to wear. Since I've given up work I don't see the point of wearing anything else just to sit around the house. I've never been a fan of sports or loungewear.

Izey · 10/12/2022 13:36

Alternative for me is skirts or dresses and tights. So many comfortable variations. Or active wear when on my way to class (with sports bag, mat and other paraphernalia).

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 13:37

I can't imagine people actually approaching a sweatpants wearer asking them why they dress that way! That sounds terribly inappropriate.. Give me the postcode then I can avoid the place Grin

I agree that jeans always felt a bit uncomfortable but I do like them. I often found wool tights to be much warmer than them though.

Are people afraid of wearing skinny jeans now and then don't feel smart or put together enough in a baggier style? Mom jeans and wider fit, I find easy enough to style in the summer but during the winter I feel like a right scruff bag in a mom Jean, jumper, big coat and boots. I prefer the sleeker smarter style of a skinny jean with chunky jumpers and boots if I'm honest. I feel more put together in leggings and active wear now as a result.

If anyone has seen a smart pair of on trend jeans, I'd love to see them.

amiold · 10/12/2022 13:39

We can't get into them after lockdown 😂😂

I do feel sloppy in baggy stuff from head to toe, but a neater fitting top half can look great. I also like leggings with a long knit over them but not sure I suit that.
To be honest I never quite know what I think suits me, I'm rather changeable and perpetually confused..

I do agree that baggier jeans look odd with coats.

People are definitely wearing them less because it's slowly (and then accelerated during the pandemic) become acceptable to wear sweatpants and leggings as every-day clothing, even to informal workplaces sometimes, plus of course so many people work from home and do the comedy 20th century newsreader thing of smart clothing on the top and pyjamas on the bottom 🤣 and that creeps into pyjama-like clothing on the bottom at all times.

I still wear jeans because they're practical- after decades of trail and error I found my perfect jeans model and have four identical pairs. No other women's clothing except cargo trousers and certain brands of walking trousers (Meru and Fjall Raven) has the pockets I need as I hate carrying a bag and my work is active. I need to be able to move totally flexibly and I need pockets as and I often need a lot of stuff immediately to hand. Almost all my colleagues wear jeans or cargo trousers. One wears leggings but she uses a cross body jogging bag.

Jeans were originally designed as workwear for manual workers not as fashion and they're practical in their original (lycra free) form! I love them for their practicality and wear them at least 9 days out of 10. I do think that they work for plenty of women if you find the right style and size but am more of an "athletic" build though - 8 inch smaller waist than hips. For a "true" hour glass or pear shaped woman with a really big difference between proportionately very small waist and wide hips lycra free jeans are probably never going to work unless made to measure!

My late teen daughter still sometimes wears jeans but more often various other trousers. They're certainly no longer a casual wear uniform.

Was that to me?

Workout leggings, other gear, not particularly sweatpants (don't really see those !) and if parents and friends are wearing workout gear they're asked what they're doing and they're usually happy to talk about what thzt us; be ut gym, running or something else. One of our acquaintances is a dance and yoga teacher so often dressed in active wear.

Izey · 10/12/2022 13:44

Lots of silly autocorrect there. I think it's still legible!

RaraRachael · 10/12/2022 13:53

I didn't realise skinny jeans were a thing of the past, I just bought a pair from Next as I really like wearing them tucked into my winter boots. Oh well, I'll be unfashionable then - like I care 😆

just my humour - i love my yoga and tend to dress that way quite a bit throughout the warmer months but struggle in winter as I can never quite find trousers I like. I really look awful in sweatpants of any variety though!

I too like Fjallraven but hiking gear bothers me, the jackets are always too short for our miserable rainy, damp weather.

OP posts:
Izey · 10/12/2022 14:10

Oh but you're right. I wouldn't approach an absolute stranger and ask why they were in active wear Grin

I wear crop or 7/8 SB power leggings on my way to yoga type classes (with long socks if need be, I must look a sight. I usually prefer crop tops or those gaping back tops, but at the moment I wear one of those Italian fleece cover up hoodies over the top of everything then a big coat.

Though I saw a man wearing shorts and exercise gear yesterday in the train station (temp was below freezing).

PorridgewithQuark · 10/12/2022 14:11

I must admit for proper winter I have a thigh lenth snowboarding jacket and for miserable, rainy, damp weather a Berghaus waterproof with room to layer under - I like Meru and Fjall Raven for trousers only - actually prefer Under Armour for hiking tops as I like the cuts, colours and neck line options (v necks and plain colours but possible to find jewel type colours).

I don't like wearing patterns which may be another reason why I've never been attracted to leggings except as a base layer (I do wear heattech leggings under my jeans or walking trousers if it's really cold).

emptythelitterbox · 10/12/2022 14:17

I seldom wear jeans anymore. I have sensory issues and they feel funny on me.

I'm very short and anything wide leg looks ridiculous on me.

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 14:33

That's interesting @emptythelitterbox this is how I'd describe my own feelings about certain clothes, especially traditional women's shoes. I feel completely out of sorts with handbags too.

@PorridgewithQuark Which Fjallraven trousers do you like? I have a pair of the abisko leggings which are fantastic but I haven't worn them in a while. I used to have some trousers called vidda pro but the sizing was a bit off.
