Do you think people are wearing jeans a lot less now?

I can't put my finger on it but there seem to be less people wearing them, at least where I am. I see tons still in the shops/online but not so much out there in the wilds.
I see more sweatpants, leggings, dresses than jeans now, on the whole, kind of a first in my lifetime.

I don't see a lot less jeans, though the All Saints (the group) look has returned for some younger women.

Jogging bottoms and leggings I would never wear and have never decided which look worse on women- jogging bottoms on men should be deemed indecent.

Porridge, you're right about the longevity of jeans. And even more right about buying second hand. I've got quite a bit of second hand denim, and I can see it outlasting me.

There is still a lot of new denim for sale and lots of young people are wearing denim. I find new and distressed particularly galling.

smalbert · 11/12/2022 23:05

Yes thankfully, have never liked them

CampervanKween · 12/12/2022 00:16

Yes I think you're right. They can be pretty uncomfortable though unless you get the ones with a bit of stretch in. Or they're very old and worn in.

I wear leggings and Boden Richmond trousers over them atm as its very cold. I have them in lots of different colours. They're very good quality and last well.

ratmatazz · 12/12/2022 02:31

I need a skinny Jean to suck in my tummy really, the looser jeans style just doesn't look good on my or make me feel put together. If people are wandering about in leggings as trousers (as opposed to an alternative to tights under a dress) - which leggings are you wearing?? I don't have any that would look appropriate as trousers in their own right

malificent7 · 12/12/2022 12:56

I find them uncomfortable and wear cords, joggers, Velvet joggers and leggings in the winter, cotton printed trousers in the summer.

33goingon64 · 12/12/2022 12:59

I'm 44, work from home and hardly ever wear jeans now. Too uncomfortable, too cold for winter and too hot for summer. Joggers, yoga pants, leggings at home then chinos or tapered tailored trousers for being smarter.

OwlingAround · 12/12/2022 13:07

I’ve only just pulled out some of my jeans to wear (with thermals underneath!) for winter walks.

Otherwise, I haven’t jeans for a few years. They’re not that comfortable and I don’t like the modern styles. I don’t think they’re flattering to my figure.

I wear gym leggings for very casual wear, slim cords occasionally, mostly tights and skirts/dresses. 3/4 length work trousers when it’s milder weather.

OwlingAround · 12/12/2022 13:08

*havent with them for a few years

felulageller · 12/12/2022 13:18

The charity shops are chock a block with jeans atm.

So people must be getting rid of them.

I was never a huge jeans fan anyway. I have flared low-ish rise ones from the mid noughties that I wear with boots now.

Otherwise I'm in sport leggings if intending on exercise (gym/ jogging) or cords or long skirts. I bought a couple of pairs of dungarees recently but I hardly ever feel brave enough to wear them!

At this time of year what I wear is weather determined. I figure what type of coat I need then work out what will fit/ look ok under that.

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 14:33

That's interesting @emptythelitterbox this is how I'd describe my own feelings about certain clothes, especially traditional women's shoes. I feel completely out of sorts with handbags too.

@PorridgewithQuark Which Fjallraven trousers do you like? I have a pair of the abisko leggings which are fantastic but I haven't worn them in a while. I used to have some trousers called vidda pro but the sizing was a bit off.

Yes, shoes have to feel balanced and comfortable for me to wear them.
I didn't used to be like that.
Some handbags just feel too heavy and awkward.
I wish there was a handbag like a clowncar, tiny but able to fit massive amounts of things!
Full makeup even feels uncomfortable like a mask.

vestedinterests · 12/12/2022 16:40

I am clearly in the minority as I wear jeans everyday. I spent the last 18 years going into an office everyday where the dress code has always been quite formal and I hated wearing the black trousers and nice top/ jumper combo, skirts and dresses.
At the beginning of lockdown I switched to sports leggings but two years later 'upgraded' to jeans and have been wearing them since, even on the days I need to go into the office.

RaraRachael · 12/12/2022 17:05

@vestedinterests I'm with you there. I've recently stopped working and am glad I no longer have to have good "work clothes". I don't like wearing leggings unless I have a very long top to cover my bum and think I'm a bit old to go about in joggers unless I'm going to the gym.

vestedinterests · 12/12/2022 19:25

@RaraRachael I always hated having the office wardrobe and a weekend/casual wardrobe and felt like once I wore something to the office it was somehow tainted and I could no longer wear it to relax in. I weirdly don't feel like that about my current wardrobe and really appreciate the change in the workplace dress code post covid

bluetongue · 13/12/2022 09:55

This is not the news I needed to hear. I have a big winter trip coming up in January and need new clothes! At the moment I really only have skinnies which aren’t really skinnies now since I lost weight.

Also, I’m short and curvy. Not sure if I can pull off wide jeans. Plus what shoes do you wear with them?

Help …

CornishGem1975 · 13/12/2022 10:04

The only place skinny jeans are 'done' is on Mumsnet 😂

MintyFreshOne · 13/12/2022 10:33

I’ve always hated jeans, fabric too unforgiving, too cold in winter, too hot in summer and doesn’t dry quickly when wet.

Very glad they aren’t ubiquitous anymore like in the 90s. Can’t even remember when I last wore a pair, I guess I should get rid of them seeing as they’re just collecting dust in my closet

EthelHollow · 14/12/2022 00:44

No i dont wear them any more either, just got tired of them pulling, stretching or never fitting properly.

Alternatives are hard though. I like combats, cords and linen in summer, and have one pair of wide leg cords right now.

I also mix with short skirts, as I suit them. I like a toned down, indie kind of look.

i see all jeans as the same really, so dont perceive skinnies as 'out'.
