Do you think people are wearing jeans a lot less now?

I can't put my finger on it but there seem to be less people wearing them, at least where I am. I see tons still in the shops/online but not so much out there in the wilds.
I see more sweatpants, leggings, dresses than jeans now, on the whole, kind of a first in my lifetime.

Oh but you're right. I wouldn't approach an absolute stranger and ask why they were in active wear Grin

I wear crop or 7/8 SB power leggings on my way to yoga type classes (with long socks if need be, I must look a sight. I usually prefer crop tops or those gaping back tops, but at the moment I wear one of those Italian fleece cover up hoodies over the top of everything then a big coat.

Though I saw a man wearing shorts and exercise gear yesterday in the train station (temp was below freezing).

Fleece is underrated! If you find a good one, never let it go! Perhaps the guy had been very active - my DP sits in summer shorts after housework for a few hours too cool down, I suppose it will help with the fuel costs:)

That's interesting @emptythelitterbox this is how I'd describe my own feelings about certain clothes, especially traditional women's shoes. I feel completely out of sorts with handbags too.

@PorridgewithQuark Which Fjallraven trousers do you like? I have a pair of the abisko leggings which are fantastic but I haven't worn them in a while. I used to have some trousers called vidda pro but the sizing was a bit off.

I'm not sure which ones they are - I bought them on Vinted. I have two very similar pairs, maybe a bit like the Karla on the Fjall-Raven website but not exactly... I just looked at them and can't see a model name on them. They're not leggings though, definitely trousers (straight leg type fit).

I agree jeans are less ubiquitous and the obvious go to for all sorts of occasions. Skinnies are particularly tricky whereas they used to be the answer to everything. It's good really as plenty of people do not suit skinnies and diversity and lots of choice is always better.

I think maybe it started with the jean leggings hybrid so a move away from traditional denim and towards comfort.

Personally I tend to find jeans too cold in winter but wear cords in the same style as jeans.

I love jeans, they suit my body shape, they work for so many occasions, I feel very comfortable in them. It's hard to find jeans but if they're uncomfortable you are probably wearing the wrong style or size. Dresses and skirts make me feel fussy and exposed. They also used to be synonymous with youth but interestingly nowadays that isn't the case and maybe eventually the most common wearers will be 'cool' pensioners.

SnowyPheasants · 10/12/2022 15:36

I wonder if certain other types of clothes will lose popularity if denim does.
Such as waxed jackets, certain styles of knee or calf boots, and so on. I can't imagine styling a wax jacket with with a thin skirt or baggy combats.
It's kind of interesting to see where this is going.
It puts a whole new spin on the concept of 'investment pieces' because some will naturally become obsolete whether we like it or not.
I remember when you could not get hold of a midi dress for nearly 20 years, unless it was for evening wear or a wedding.

I agree with this point about people who are uncomfortable in jeans not having the right jeans for their body (style or size - a lot of people buy or wear their jeans too small). I do think women with very tiny waists and very broad hips in proportion to waists genuinely can't find off the peg trousers of any kind except very stretchy ones and get stuck with dresses, stretchy active wear or ill-fitting trousers though.

I don't think jeans will age out but think they'll become more niche/ one of many options rather than the default casual wear (in fact I think it's already happened). Young women do still wear them IME, just not as their default.

Season0fTheWitch · 10/12/2022 16:10

There are so many non-denim options in fashion now, cords and loungewear especially. I live in flared leggings now but do still wear skinny jeans when I'm out out

TwoBlondes · 10/12/2022 16:23

Two DDs in their late twenties don't own any jeans.
I have about 15 pairs 😳

MattDamon · 10/12/2022 16:44

The young and trendy in our London office still wear skinnies quite a bit. Never see them in any other jeans.

Lampzade · 10/12/2022 16:51

Before Covid/ lockdown I wore jeans and high heeled boots.
I now wear leggings and hoodies/ sweatshirts

RoseMartha · 10/12/2022 16:59

I dont wear jeans as much as I used to, I more often wear a dress or tunic dress or skirt and sometimes jeggings or leggings. Only joggers at home. I also very rarely wear shorts.

kerstina · 10/12/2022 19:28

i am bored of jeans after wearing them most of my life . I now wear soft thin cords ,linen ,cashmere joggers, combat and mainly lose fit jogger style trousers . I only wear two pairs of Jean type trousers . I don’t think they are denim nut they were from H&M’s featherlight jeans in blue and charcoal. Lovely and soft and comfy . I am 53 still like to buy clothes that suit me but jeans fill a bit restrictive for me now .

VanillaImpulse · 10/12/2022 21:07

Too uncomfortable and not even particularly nice looking. Glad they have been replaced!

dudsville · 11/12/2022 09:00

I stopped wearing jeans in my 40s when I wanted a smarter way of dressing casually. Similarly i stopped wearing trainers in my 30s (started again in my 50s!)

Soccermumamir · 11/12/2022 09:08

Yes definitely. I work in a college and barely see anyone including students wearing them. Probably since Covid when everyone was in joggers, leggings lol They're not as nice to wear anymore. I have 2 pairs and don't wear them that much either.

SallyWD · 11/12/2022 09:18

My children just want to wear jogging bottoms all the time. I see many people my age (40s) in jeans. I work in a university and the students wear a real mix of trousers - there are a lot of jogging bottoms and leggings, also other types of flared and cropped trousers. Plenty of them wear jeans too.

What do you wear instead? X

nancy75 · 11/12/2022 09:25

I’m finding wider leg jeans difficult in winter because I can’t make any shoes look ok! Fine in warmer weather with sandals but none of my boots or trainers look right

familyissues12345 · 11/12/2022 09:30

I've stepped away from jeans, mainly helped by starting my first ever job that doesn't include a uniform! I'm loving wearing smarter chinos etc, skirts

FlamingJingleBells · 11/12/2022 09:41

I saw a woman in town wearing a jersey/ Lycra catsuit and nothing else. Even though she was covered up, her outfit was revealing. I saw that as a base layer rather than outer wear, I certainly wouldn’t wear that round town. It looked like that she’d forgotten to get fully dressed, way too casual.

Kalasbyxor · 11/12/2022 09:47

Not a bad thing to see less of denim jeans -terrible for the environment.

HeleneLagonelle · 11/12/2022 09:56

I’m certainly wearing them a lot less, though I still own lots of pairs — partly in my case, it’s needing to dress both more warmly and in a more put-together way for a job that has a lot of talking to large groups after I’d worked from home for ages. (Our house is a building site and freezing, and I walk everywhere.)

I’m wearing knitted dresses from Reiss and Cos, have rediscovered skirts — I have a gorgeous new Cos A-line wool one, a tan faux-leather one, and a very old asymmetric pinstripe one I found at the back of a drawer — that I either wear with biker boots or chunky-heeled ankle boots. (I’ve also discovered heels for the first time in my life at 50, just when everyone else is discarding them!) I’ve rediscovered my own legs!

That’s absolutely true.

Moon22 · 11/12/2022 10:35

Yes I have definitely noticed this.
The only thing is that skinny jeans are so wearable with winter boots so I am still wearing mine. I'm looking for alternatives though.
I like wearing tgermal leggings and longish jumpers with winter boots

PorridgewithQuark · 11/12/2022 16:18

All fast fashion/ buying clothes new is bad for the environment. Cotton is bad for the environment but many trousers are cotton, not just jeans, and most get less wear. Most synthetic fibers are also bad for the environment.

At least proper denim (not lycra mix) jeans last for at least a decade of regular wear - unlike a lot of soft, stretchy high lycra content leg- wear.

My jeans are all from Vinted as I prefer to pay 20€ a pair rather than 120€ for the exact jeans I've found work best for me. I think they're probably better for the environment than multiple pairs of new fast fashion leggings/ tights/ sweatpants which need replacing frequently and are worn far less times over their "lifespan".

doorheckk · 11/12/2022 16:27

yes sweatpants/joggers definitely been styled how jeans would have been
