I'm looking for some seriously warm thermals for when I go skiing. I'm always cold! Can anyone recommend some really good ones

I've never had silk/merino sets (pricey!) but read outdoor gear guides and they are always rated top.

Uniqlo Ultra Heather for me. They have different levels of thermal, these are the highest level.

Sorry, I really cannot get the name right today:

HEATTECH Extra Warm

I have two different makes, the Uniqlo heat tech ones and the M&S ones. The m&s ones are so much nicer, they seem a bit thinner but warmer. I don't know how 😀 I found the Uniqlo ones made me feel a bit trussed up .

Pure merino wool, or silk+merino wool
Dilling are excellent

Which M and S ones would you recommend ?

M&S heatgen leggings are lovely and cosy.

BumbleNova · 09/12/2022 18:37

If you are skiing you need proper thermal layers -m&s/ uniqlo will not cut it.

Have a look for merino wool. Lots of brands, icebreaker are brilliant. Sportspursuit does some really good options at good prices.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 09/12/2022 18:40

i wear uniqlo Heatech for every day in winter. For actual skiing, try the adult sizes of Smalls Merino or the merino mixes/pure stuff on Sportspursuit as someone above mentions. Added bonus is they don’t get smelly which is helpful on a ski trip - less washing.

ChristmasTidyings · 09/12/2022 18:52

Odlo (warm or extra warm, not light)
icebreaker merino
mons Royale Merino

LadyLaLaa · 09/12/2022 22:05

@MoriaRoseForever The ones I got were the heatgen thermals. Personally I found them very comfortable.

Cynderella · 09/12/2022 22:49

I bought two Icebreaker Merino base layers - they so different weights, so you'd look at the higher ones. I alternate them - machine washing on 30 wooden programme - wearing them under other thin wool layers. Essentially, I'm wearing the same every day while I WFH - the top will layers don't need washing very often. I've found them easy to wash and dry even indoors.

I also have M&S fleecy leggings as mentioned above. Again, they're worn under another layer, and it's one pair to wear and the other in the wash.

SmartWatch · 10/12/2022 01:04

Uniqlo for me too. Plus pay more for a ski jacket with taped seams and wind chill protection etc. I wa sceptical but it made a difference.

Mercurial123 · 10/12/2022 08:31

Another vote for Icebreaker merino thermals. I also have the underwear merino boy shorts. Quality is excellent I've had them for at least 5 years.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/12/2022 13:07

I'm currently using Uniqlo and not finding them that great.
People are mentioning skiing base layers. Would I be able to find some at Decathlon?

talomon · 10/12/2022 13:26

for skiing, I like isobaa and smartwool.

Check sportpursuit website. They have a lot of sales

Giftwithpurchase · 10/12/2022 13:27

I am coveting the new Sweaty Betty ski base layers - they are gorgeous - merino wool in skandi patterns

Timeforachangeisitnot · 10/12/2022 13:29

Kari Traa - great quality merino and some very jazzy patterns

formulatingAresponse · 10/12/2022 18:22

Decathlon have everything you'll need

Marks & Sparks

Fedupwitheveryone · 11/12/2022 08:17

Another vote for the M&S Heatgen thick fleecy ones - super soft and the only ones I don't want to take off as soon as i get home - i've been wearing them all week. Not as clingy but still warm
