StellaGibson2022 · 09/12/2022 00:27

Hello,

would you all be kind enough to give me your must haves for make up for someone in their late 40s.

ideally I want a make up collection that I can take from office to evening with just a few tweaks.

Bonus thanks if you can also recommend online tutorials so I know how to apply etc!

Thanks :)

Clinique “Even Better” makeup is light enough for day wear but gives good coverage at night.
A tubing mascara - Clinique Lash Power is great.
Two cream blushes: one light for day, one darker for night. Ditto lipstick and cream eyeshadow.
Laura Mercier makes a beautiful cream eyeshadow stick

Bobbi Brown if you prefer brown tones

Trinny London cream blushes are really nice. You could get a Lip Luxe, blush and eyeshadow all in one stack, throw in your bag.

The great thing about all of these is just slap it on, you’re good to go.
There are tons of blush placement videos
trinnylondon.com/au/blog/how-to-apply-cream-blush
One good tip is to place two fingers next to your nose to find the spot to apply, brush the blush upwards along your cheekbone.

StellaGibson2022 · 13/12/2022 09:32

Thank you! I do like cream blush and use already.

unfortunately I have an oily T zone and dry skin and I think Trinny’s base looks too shiny.

I have been using the LRP BB blur cream but they have discontinued and I think I would like a little more coverage these days! but that was so easy to apply and looked brilliant

Follow @katyjanehughes on Insta if you like a dewy fresh look. I'm mid 40's and love her tutorials and have got more adventurous with colour too!

LadyGAgain · 13/12/2022 09:35

Sorry @katiejanehughes

LadyGAgain · 13/12/2022 09:37

Ester Lauder double wear sheer gives lovely coverage without feeling heavy or caked (I never liked the double wear) and can use translucent or powder bronzer to take some of the shine.

Bobbins36 · 13/12/2022 09:39

@StellaGibson2022 ref Trinny the BFFDestress is the glowy one, BFFRebalance is a matte finish, love the stuff! It’s changed my midlife make up 😀

MissyB1 · 13/12/2022 09:47

I recommend Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser (it’s not shiny just looks fresh). Charlotte Tilbury cheek and lip tint. And yes to the Laura Mercier eyeshadow sticks.
What I’ve had to accept is that as we get older we have to spend a bit more on makeup.

Sparkletastic · 13/12/2022 09:58

Erborian BB cream
Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter
Nars radiant creamy concealer
Brow pencil of your choice - Soap and Glory do a great one
Charlotte Tilbury bronzer if you want to warm your complexion up or MAC Warm Soul blusher
MAC Boldly Bare or any NYX lipliner
Lipstick of your choice - Lisa Eldridge are great for high end, Maybelline Vinyl Stay are great for a cheaper option

Thank you all so much - I completely forgot I have the estee launder double wear sheer already and I do love it!

will look at the tutorials and have been eyeing up the Laura Mercier eye pencils.

e.l.f eye shadow sticks are a budget version of Laura Mercier which are very good. You can go in with a heavier hand for an evening look or apply some powder shadow over the top.

I usually apply a full face in the morning and in my make up bag just have concealer, an hourglass palette for powder/blush, a couple of eye pencils and a lipstick to ramp my face up for an evening out.

haribonoyoudont · 13/12/2022 13:15

I tend to go for, and would recommend:

  • Eborian CC cream (if you're feeling good about your skin, you can just use this instead of a foundation - it's really good for evening out skin tone)
  • Estee Lauder Hydra Futurist foundation (super flattering)
  • Concealer (I switch between Hourglass and Glossier, mostly for under the eyes)
  • Brow pencil (currently into Benefit Goof Proof)
  • Powder eyeshadow (I really like NARS and the Glossier trios)...
  • ...or stick eyeshadow - these can be good for darker colours / lining on a lighter powder base (e.l.f is great and cheap; Laura Mercier if you want to spend more)
  • Blush (NARS again, also Glossier Cloud Paint - good for blending) Lipstick (I have loads* - current favourites are Lisa Eldridge / MAC / L'Oreal for heavier coverage, or Dior Lip Glow / Chanel Rouge Coco Balme / Burts Bees tinted lip balm for something lighter).

What I've noticed about changing my make-up as I get older is that my skin is so much dryer and paler, so I need my make-up to be super moisturising, blended and glowy, and less flat and harsh. That kind of super-matte structured bold look which looked great when I was in my 20s and early 30s now just makes me look like Bette Davis in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?"

Deathraystare · 16/12/2022 19:04

see the following on you tube - Lisa Eldrich, there is a lady called (something and flashy ? fit and flashy - basically type mature make up or make up for forties.

PollyPicket2 · 18/12/2022 14:18

Estee Lauder Hydra Futurist foundation is very flattering. Get colour matched at a counter in John Lewis or Boots.

Charlotte Tilbury eye shadow quads are lovely.

Benefit dandelion blush is flattering.
