Make up at 40

I'm steadily approaching 40 and feel that my make up, eyes in particular, needs to change. I've always kept to a fairly minimal combination of eyeliner and mascara but feel it looks a bit harsh now. Does anyone have any good tips for what to try for eye make up, or any good Instagram accounts etc to follow to get some ideas?

Thank you!

Whatever you do, please don't go overboard on the eye makeup. Especially black liner. I know you said you don't OP, but just some tong for anyone else reading this. I've actually got a friend on her 50's who lines her eyes with dark black liner and it looks terrible. I've not got the heart to tell her.

The other day I saw Claudia Winkleman on TV and she's really got to stop using such heavy black eye liner. It's so harsh on her and she's her face so much now.

Actually you’re right. I’ve got a friend who wears heavy black eyeliner in her lower rims and it looks awful. The way I do it if I do do it is very lightly and balanced with mascara.

If you don't need much coverage, I just use a tinted moisteuriser and a bit of powder to dial down any shine (I've got combination skin that can get a bit greasy). I swap between Laura Mercier and Beautypie's own.

Also a big fan of the eyeshadow as eyeliner, but make sure to put concealer on after, as sometimes there is a bit of splatter if you use a powerdry eyeshadow.

Also +1 to tubing mascara. I just use the no7 one, but I used to love the estee lauder one. They didn't have them in stock a while ago(not sure if they've been discontinued) and I switched and the No7 is fine for everyday use.

Today for work I just did eyeshadow along the lashes and some mascara and I think it looked much better - you were all right! I was looking at some of those eyeshadow stick things - does anyone use those or have a particular brand to recommend? I'm thinking purely for lazy reasons, something easy to swipe across the lashes that's softer than an eyeliner.

I don't usually wear anything except mascara on my eyes. I haven't worn eyeliner on a regular basis since I was about 25. I don't really like the look of heavily made up eyes
