What is "in" vs what people are actually wearing

I often read on here that no-one wears heels, skinny jeans are dated and short bodycon dresses are out.

I went out in Leeds last night, and all the young girls (I am an old gimmer, so I am talking late teens, early 20s) were either wearing short bodycon dresses/skirts and tight tops with heels or skinny jeans and heels. I felt a little out of place in my jeans, jumper and trainers.

I think it depends where you go. Brighton last night 80% of the women were in fiat shoes. Up north has always been dressier than the south.

SquirmOfEels · 04/12/2022 20:42

I like in London, not hipster bits, but travelling through affluent west London regularly.

Over 50% wear skinnies - esp with boots. Despite all the column inches saying they're dated/unfashionable, they remain the clear preference (many not in jeans are in gym leggings, so same skinny silhouette)

Heels, not many.

Bodycon - not much seen, during daytime at least. But looking at DD it seems to be very much a choice for after dark

Ohmygoshposh · 04/12/2022 21:00

I went out for drinks last night, affluent area down south. Was with a group of women age 35-45.

A few of the women were in heels and skinnies (jeans or leather look). A couple of the more fashion conscious ones were in wider trouser & chunky boots.

I get the sense people are getting fed up with wearing super casual stuff all the time after the Covid years and now people are ready to dress up & party again

emilydickinsonscat · 06/12/2022 17:43

I just think fashion is very tribal.

Yes if you are travelling through west London (Kensington rather than Shepherd's Bush) you are going to see Preppy Smart - skinny jeans and leather boots.

If you are on a night out in Leeds you are going to see skimpy outfits, high heels, fake tan.

These aren't 'fashion' but people wear what works for them, and their lifestyles and to fit in their crowd. Was always thus.

If you want to see fashion you need to hang out where the fashionable hang out.

askagainlater · 06/12/2022 17:56

Where I live, most are in flares, cargo pants, trainers, DMs, chunky boots etc. I very rarely see skinny jeans. People do wear leggings, but with chunky boots and oversized jackets or coats.
I don't live in a trendy area, and usually see quite a lot of different groups of people.
I'm in East London

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/12/2022 18:38

I’m just here to hear about the fiat shoes @CraigDavid , lol

yoyy · 06/12/2022 18:52

massive platform shoes are in

yoyy · 06/12/2022 18:53

higher waistline

Batcountry8 · 06/12/2022 18:56

I've just googled fiat trainers 🤣

I thought oh they sound cool and have definitely not hit Devon yet.

Ah Fila, you mean Fila! X

yoyy · 06/12/2022 18:57

cargo trousers & that awful denim shit from the 00s so coming back

JackGrealishsLegs · 06/12/2022 18:57

@CraigDavid meant flat shoes.

LadyAstor · 06/12/2022 18:57

I’m in the Midlands and see all sorts of styles; skinnies & heels, wide leg trousers with either trainers or chunky boots. MIDI and maxi dresses. a few mini dresses/skirts. flared jumpsuits.

It’s more casual down South, more glamorous from Cheshire northwards.

Whattaboutit · 06/12/2022 18:59

Very area dependant. Skinny jeans have pretty much disappeared where I live. Visited a small town about an hour away at the weekend and, hanging out in a busy playground, noticed that every single woman bar 1 was in skinnies.

Aleaiactaest · 06/12/2022 19:07

My mum kept some of my late 90s teen clothes- few cargos, ripped jeans, wide dungarees, skater tops- my teen DD is wearing them and her friends think that is cool. Fashion trends are so weird! She also found some old leather jackets. DMs are their choice for school shoes. They are all wearing black puffers this season. Some of the fashionable mums are dressing like their teens which personally I find very strange…

I am sticking to my mum skinnies mostly for now but with trainers and puffer because it is just more comfortable on the go. For work I dress like most of my colleagues and nights out I dress to look nice not according to fashion. Past a certain age looking good for your age and feeling comfortable is more important.

HeadNorth · 06/12/2022 19:15

I work in a University and the young ‘uns dress like I did in the 80s 😀Lots of DMs and chunky shoes/boots, baggy grandad cardies, big trousers clinched with a wide belt at the waist, or flared midi skirts with teeny crop top and huge jacket.

No skinnies and heels, but yes to flatforms and flares.

BelenaConhamHarter · 06/12/2022 19:21

Was also out in Leeds on Saturday night - it's wall to wall Pretty Little Thing style Kim Kardashian dresses and sets.

They don't dress at all the same way in London.

'Twas ever thus

pocketvenuss · 06/12/2022 19:24

The only people I see wearing skinnies around me (affluent Surrey) are women around 50 who are slightly behind the curve, wear Mint Velvet and leather biker jackets and think they are edgy. Anyone with any actual fashion or style sense is wearing wide legs, baggy or tailored trousers with flats.

Floraflower3 · 06/12/2022 21:50

I can’t picture wide leg trousers and chunky boots looking good 😬 could someone send pics of what they mean?

RunnerDown · 06/12/2022 22:00

I’m over 50, and I’m not going to pretend I’m fashionable. I like leather jackets and Mint Velvet.
I’ve gone back to skinnies because they suit me much better, and I’m bored with wearing clothes that are deemed to be trendier but actually just look silly and unflattering when I put them on .
In the “students” parts of Glasgow there’s lots of wider leg trousers, crop tops , and midi dresses. Not everyone looks stylish in them . In the city Centre on Saturday night lots of girls are in very revealing outfits. Not everyone looks stylish.
But as long as you feel good in what you wear who cares.

Heartbreaktuna · 06/12/2022 22:36

The young women round here are firmly in a uniform of cargo pants with giant pockets, wide ugly trainers, and tiny crop tops. Scottish city.

i am 5ft1 and would not touch this trend with a barge pole.

WhereAreWeNow · 06/12/2022 22:36

Plenty of women still in skinny jeans in London. Me included! I've got wide ones and baggy ones too but I still like my skinny jeans.

Rockingcloggs · 06/12/2022 22:40

The least well dressed people I have ever come across are the ones who blindly follow trends/fashion! They're usually the same ones who make barbed jibes at people who have the audacity to have minds and styles of their own. They never quite look as good as they or their magazines/Instagram like to think they do!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 06/12/2022 22:43

The best dressed people are non trend following, they are people who aware of what they look good in and suits them, that look becomes timeless and it can be adapted to remain fresh. There is nothing worse than trying too hard to keep up with fashion trends that are only generated to sell products and getting in it so wrong.

I'm in east/central London and haven't seen anyone in skinny jeans since pre-Covid. Well, apart from a middle aged male tourist (I overheard his conversation) by the Tower of London last week.

Schlaar · 06/12/2022 23:03

It takes time for old jeans to wear out. The poor are still wearing their skinny jeans despite them no longer being trendy.
