What is "in" vs what people are actually wearing

I often read on here that no-one wears heels, skinny jeans are dated and short bodycon dresses are out.

I went out in Leeds last night, and all the young girls (I am an old gimmer, so I am talking late teens, early 20s) were either wearing short bodycon dresses/skirts and tight tops with heels or skinny jeans and heels. I felt a little out of place in my jeans, jumper and trainers.

I’m in Edinburgh. There’s a lot of practical dressing here. Hardly ever see heels - very steep hills, lots of lanes, cobbles everywhere, tram tracks and icy pavements, means you are taking your life in your hands wearing them.

Puffa jackets (North Face amongst under 30’s) or puffa coats and high waisted jeans with platform trainers or chunky Chelsea boots. Skinny jeans I only see tucked into knee high boots. Ganni sweatshirts,l and Scandi dressing is very popular. I’d say lots of people wear boho dresses to go out at night with practical footwear.

Some of those baggy pants are expensive, especially the Skiboarder brands.

The only people I see wearing skinnies around me (affluent Surrey) are women around 50 who are slightly behind the curve, wear Mint Velvet and leather biker jackets and think they are edgy. Anyone with any actual fashion or style sense is wearing wide legs, baggy or tailored trousers with flats.

Nice 🙄

I can’t picture wide leg trousers and chunky boots looking good 😬 could someone send pics of what they mean?

It doesn't look good 😁but it is what is in fashion at the mo so people will spend their money on it.

Aleaiactaest · 07/12/2022 09:37

I still have flares and wide legged jeans that fit me from the early 00s but I refuse to wear them because I don’t want to look like my teens. I am wearing the wider legged flared black trousers though and woolly styled ones. No way am I going to dress in joggers or cargoes. I still look young and am a size 8 but I refuse to keep up with daughter too much. I find mums who do that very strange.
Rewearing the trends of my youth is quite nostalgic but I draw the line at looking too much like a student or a teen. I also still have lots of junky jumpers and boots.
Wondering now when cords will come back into fashion and those pointy shoes… because I still have some

My 18 year old dd as a size 6 looks great in it, but that's because she pairs it with a midriff-baring top, even in the depths of winter 🥶

Menopants · 07/12/2022 09:46

I think post Covid with Vinted, fast fashion and Instagram ‘fashion’ is a lot more fluid. I think the days of everyone wearing the same boots or jacket are on the way out. There are trends but on the whole I think folk are more likely to wear what they like. There were racks and racks of those ghastly prairie dresses everywhere this summer but I can only imagine they are languishing in landfill, perfectly preserved viscose leaving future archaeologist to wonder at what frumpy cult ruled in our era.
that said I did try on some old skinny jeans recently cos I have lost weight and hated the sausage leg look.

peaceandove · 07/12/2022 09:47

DD1 is at art school. A lot of her friends are studying fashion & design. Lots of baggy jeans and huge, chunky shoes or trainers. Oversized vintage Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirts seem very popular and 90s style puffa jackets. Very little in the way of glamour.

Trees6 · 07/12/2022 09:56

I was watching the original Do They Know It’s Christmas video yesterday and it occurred to me that the uni youngsters around here are dressing like Bananarama did back then. High-waisted baggy jeans, flat shoes and oversized tops.

FB546 · 07/12/2022 10:05

I like fashion, but don't feel a slave to it. If sometthing really doesn't suit me, style or colour, I don't wear it.

Having recently pottered around New Look, they had a wall display with every type of jean imaginable - with a label eg super skinny, bootles, mom. Every possible option. Therefore anything goes!

astronewt · 07/12/2022 10:22

I work by Central Saint Martin's and the fashion is truly epic. It leans heavily to the 90s and grunge at the moment. Night-out fashion has always had a big north-south divide though, and tends to go for broke up Norf.

I haven't taken out my skinny jeans in a year. Wearing straight or wide legs. Or gym leggings, but I do work out a lot.

MorrisZapp · 07/12/2022 11:17

It's all very well for the bloggers to wear wide beige trousers, a huge beige wool coat, trainers and a cross body bag when they're fully made up and standing in their fabulous kitchen.

Unmade up, with crap hair, struggling on a bus with groceries etc I would look like the pigeon woman from Home Alone if I tried that style. It only works if it looks fully intentional, which I don't have time for most days.

Skinnyish jeans and boots with a bit of height make me feel so much more confident in daily life.

At 51, obviously I'm not aiming for current street fashion in it's edgiest form. I wore all that nineties stuff in the nineties and even my hot young bod looked meh in most of it.

As a lifelong Edinburgh dweller (and top floor flat resident) I can cope fine with a couple of inches of a heel, especially in wedge form. Good wedge boots make walking easier as they lengthen my stride!

StaringAtTheWater · 07/12/2022 11:26

Bit of a mix where I live - some skinny, some in more fashionable baggy styles. I'm never out late enough to see proper party clothes, so no idea on that! 😂

I'm sticking with my unfashionable skinny jeans. My slim legs are my best feature and I'm quite short, so in baggy jeans I look like an overgrown toddler. Also I like to be warm so I don't want any gaps between the top of my boot and bottom my jeans - they should overlap for better heat retention!

Roominmyhouse · 07/12/2022 13:20

People need to remember why fashion changes, and it’s mainly to get you buying more clothes. If they didn’t keep saying different styles of jeans were in fashion people wouldn’t buy as many pairs!

I’m in Kent and I see all sorts of trouser shapes on the go. Skinny, wide legged, flared. I own a mix and just wear what feels comfortable and looks flattering. Trying to keep up with fashion seems pointless really, much better to know what looks good on your body shape!

eyope · 07/12/2022 13:41

I'm in the apparently trendiest bit of East London and still see lots of skinnies and biker boots with slouchy mock neck jumpers. The high waisted ankle length barrel jeans with DMs and a beanie is popular too. I do notice most women in flat or low heeled boots and sneakers now. No high heels really anymore, though it may vary in places with a dress code.

Mostly I notice women wearing whatever they want and looking great in it!

eyope · 07/12/2022 13:42

Oh and smart little backpacks seem very popular now too!

xogossipgirlxo · 07/12/2022 14:24

I'm up north and must admit, haven't noticed too many people in skinny jeans. More baggy jeans, sweatpants or leggings (which I don't get, but anyway). Young girls look like models from Pretty Little Thing, or this sort of shops. I think adults care less about fashion, and it becomes more about the style. I don't understand why heels are out though. I can't imagine wearing flats to some glamour occasion etc. Some heels are not nice, I agree (like the attached), but Princess of Wales or MM wear very nice shoes, and their outfits never look dated with them that you'd look at them and say "huh, it would go better with loafers".

Uhm. The Princess of Wales's outfits could nicely be referred to as "classic", but they often do look really quite dated, and ageing too.

SolitaryMind · 07/12/2022 15:02

I’m still seeing lots of skinny jeans here (Scottish city) still in the shops too.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 07/12/2022 15:18

Skinny jeans are definitely still widely worn in the places I've visited, but I rarely see proper heels now. I see a lot of stompy boots, chunky block heels, or shoes with 'fat', platform like soles.

That's true, I should have said us middle aged mums don't get away with it as much as we might like to think we do. For some reason lots of us continue to buy every new trend that pops up.

Crabbi · 07/12/2022 15:31

People have always worn fashions from previous years. Some people are more fashion forward and wear new trends straight away. This is true of a lot of things like new technology. Also, remember in London there are lots of tourists so fashions will be quite diverse.

Echobelly · 07/12/2022 15:36

Day to day dressing in London everyone's in those long teired shirt dresses (which TBH I think look pretty rubbish on most women) with trainers or ankle boots. Daytime heels have pretty much vanished since COVID.

Stevie6 · 07/12/2022 15:46

I just hope nobody is wearing this outfit that's showing as an ad on this thread - I'm mean Wtaf?

AnnieSnap · 07/12/2022 15:57

Is it just me that thinks that, maybe for the first time, recent fashions have followed what women feel comfortable in? During 2020/21, with all the WFH, worry and stress, women started wearing clothes that felt good. Comfortable fabrics and styles, so loose and soft, with flat footwear. I think fashion houses have tried briefly to bring discomfort back, but without success, so have (in the interests of their profits) gone with the zeitgeist.
