What is "in" vs what people are actually wearing

I often read on here that no-one wears heels, skinny jeans are dated and short bodycon dresses are out.

I went out in Leeds last night, and all the young girls (I am an old gimmer, so I am talking late teens, early 20s) were either wearing short bodycon dresses/skirts and tight tops with heels or skinny jeans and heels. I felt a little out of place in my jeans, jumper and trainers.

Short bodycon dresses are most definitely in fash in the "younger" stores where I live. Ankle length high waisted skinnies as well. Not wanting to offend but mumsnet is (on the whole) very out of touch these days.

Where do you live though? I don’t see anyone young wearing skinnies in central London.

ComfortablyDazed · 11/12/2022 17:29

I’m at the arse-end of the planet, and nobody under 30 wears skinnies.

mewkins · 11/12/2022 17:49

I own a wide variety of jeans but this week wear skinnies because I can wear them with snowboots which is the only acceptable footwear for me right now! I may wear DMs if I was going into London (or into work) but my feet would be freezing. When the temperature moves above zero I may consider a woolly dress and tights and boots.

It takes time for old jeans to wear out. The poor are still wearing their skinny jeans despite them no longer being trendy.

Only absolute paupers use the term 'trendy' nowadays.

I don't understand how skinny jeans can ever be out of fashion. They look flattering on so many people, whether you are thin or overweight.

I vividly remember people saying exactly the same thing about bootcuts when they finally went out! Now that makes me feel old. I think our eyes have collectively adjusted to see skinnies as the default jean shape - about 20 years ago they were viewed with horror and suspicion!

I just think fashion is very tribal.

Yes if you are travelling through west London (Kensington rather than Shepherd's Bush) you are going to see Preppy Smart - skinny jeans and leather boots.

If you are on a night out in Leeds you are going to see skimpy outfits, high heels, fake tan.

These aren't 'fashion' but people wear what works for them, and their lifestyles and to fit in their crowd. Was always thus.

If you want to see fashion you need to hang out where the fashionable hang out.

Yes exactly. It’s very tribal.

Skinny’s aren’t high fashion but people still wear them, like they wear white shirts and hoops. They are a basic item that works for many, if you want to look nice rather than fashionable.

Heels aren’t that unusual or out of fashion at night, to a greater or lesser extent, depending who and what.

And bodycon dresses are like little black dresses to a lot of people. They are generically sexy and dressed up, and that suits lots of people.

Right, that's possible that they will slowly go out of fashion.

However, I am half a stone overweight, I have a c-section belly no matter what exercise I do and skinny jeans make my body look so much more toned and fit and hug me in all the right places.

They look nice on a lot of people, and if you aren’t totally slender they allow you to wear a loose top, but keep a slim overall silhouette, which CAN be flattering.

However if you are really un-blessed in the leg shape dept, they do tend to make your pins look like upside down parsnips so I think universally flattering is pushing it.

I grew up in the 90s bootcut era, and I’m sure they weren’t great on everything either - but we absolutely thought they were the most flattering Jean hands down.

You just get used to a shape and you stop really seeing it.

The same way anything can be out of fashion. Don't you remember the time before skinny jeans? It was bootcuts or nothing and then when skinny came in, people who could not imagine life without bootcuts were saying exactly the same thing you are saying now about skinny's. And then eventually even those slow to adopt new styles started wearing skinny's.

NoelNoNoel · 11/12/2022 19:39

South East here, all the women over 35 or so wear skinnies or leather leggings with chunky ankle boots, Doc Martin type boots.

cyrila · 11/12/2022 19:48

I was in the pub this afternoon. Admittedly it was very very cold, but women of all ages were wearing skinnies and boots. London.

Indeed. I was one of those people.

I have actually either charity shopped my skinnies or just wear them when wfh now though.

I use the term “on trend”. Is that as bad? 😳 I am not a pauper, but I am old, so that could explain it! FFS1 🙄

verdantverdure · 11/12/2022 21:06

I don't know if I don't see many women in skinny jeans in east London or if I just don't notice them.

Mezmer · 11/12/2022 21:10

Am looking into this too. Skinny jeans are totally out. Most modern style now is cropped flares with heavy boots and a cropped waist length top pref batwing and a cacoon coat. My wardrobe is complete dated so am waiting for the sales.

no one wears this where I live, if I go half an hour down the road to Brighton lots of the youngsters do.

Buteverythingsfine · 11/12/2022 21:12

Uggs are back in and can't be worn with flappy wide trousers, so skinny silhouettes are back in with my late teens, but they wear fluffy legging/activewear type things, not blue jean skinnies. They wear wide legs and flares as well, always with crop tops, winter is very upsetting to them as they have to cover their stomachs and it ruins the look.

I think mid-blue denim skinnies look a bit dated, I sometimes wear them if I'm feeling too lazy to style my flares and I agree that for winter with boots they are super-practical.

I would say that look is from about 3/4 years ago. My Dil was wearing that back then.

Ok so how about bringing me up to date with your advice?

NoelNoNoel · 11/12/2022 22:20

I thought what was on trend was any type of jeans, mom , boyfriend, flares, cropped, skinnies
etc.

TheGander · 11/12/2022 22:20

Flares don’t work for my lifestyle ( no car, cycle or walk everywhere, public transport 1-2/ week). They don’t suit my figure terribly well either, make my legs look shorter.Skinnies just work better for me. I won’t impose my mid riff on anyone after 4 pregnancies and a hernia op, so crop tops are out. I agree there probably is a tendency to stop adopting new styles past a certain age ( I’m 55) and that in itself can be ageing, the sweet spot must be to evolve but on your own terms, not following every last trend.

VisitingThem · 11/12/2022 22:32

Of course you can wear UGG's with wide trousers, trousers don't have to be tucked into boots!

I noticed they are selling New Rocks in Schuh, they used to look so good back in the 90's/2000's with flared jeans and trousers, as long as the trousers are a proper length instead of cropped. All the metal detailing in the soles flashing as you walk. Absolute nostalgia lol.
