I look like this - what should I wear for Christmas do (and possibly in general?)

I haven’t been to a ‘Christmas do’ for years but have somehow been strong armed into going to one this year. It’s on the fancier end of the spectrum apparently - not full black tie but most people will be quite glam.

This was the dress I already owned which I had in mind. Tried it on for the first time in a few years earlier and clearly I can’t wear it - too tight and my belly is huge, I still look pregnant (I’m not btw).

I’m including the photo anyway (and apologise for the extreme close up vibe, was trying to crop out identifying details) as it’s easier than describing my ‘shape’ etc and thought maybe someone more practiced than me would be able to go ‘ahh yes, you need this kind of style to hide those bits and show those bits …’

I don’t really know where to start looking for something that would actually suit me - I’ve only
got 2 weeks and not really much free time for
shopping so was hoping for some direction.

Budget - as little as possible really, but I’ll spend up to £75 so we are very much talking lower end of the high st really - but if you think a more expensive dress would work I’d still like to see it so maybe I can see what sort of styles/ shapes people think would be good.

5ft 7 and size 18.

Will give myself a pedicure and attempt to do something with my pale (and bruised?!) legs.

Please help. I went freelance/ switched to working from home, had a baby/ gained a very round stomach and obviously lockdown -
somewhere in all that I’ve completely forgotten how to dress myself.

Aside from Christmas do, I probably need more general help too! Are those subscription things worth it where you give details and they send you clothes every month? Are there any that go up to size 18 and aren’t eye wateringly expensive?

We'll, that dress doesn't look too bad from the front in that photo! Granted I can't see a side view. Might possibly be ok with just some supportive underwear, such as one of those support slips from M&S. or maybe a blazer might go well over the top. However, if you are conscious of your stomach, I think something similar but with a less body con skirt, one that skims, would suit you. 🙂

I think your shape looks really nice. All you need is a dress fitted around the waist (the one in the picture looks good around the waist) that skims the hips , and that flares out a little at the hem and I think you'd look super glam. You could either have one that is more skimmy at the hips and goes in and then a little kick out at the hem, or one that flares out the waist. Either could be flattering. I'd look for the shape of dress. I'm sure people better placed than me will be able to send you lovely dress ideas. But just wanted to say after reading your post, my goodness why are you running yourself down. You look lovely. I'm sure you will look brilliant at the christmas do.

Menopants · 28/11/2022 22:40

You have great knockers, that dress looks great but if u are self conscious about your belly get one of those enormous sucking it all in knickers

sakura06 · 28/11/2022 22:41

I think that dress is really nice OP! Sorry I'm not a top fashion person, but I think it's lovely on you!

helpmegetdressed · 28/11/2022 22:41

Ooh that is pretty @faretheewell thank you!

Yes the side view was not good! I was getting DH to take pictures so I could see how it looked because ridiculously we don’t have a full length mirror, he didn’t take a side on one I don’t think.

I was surprised when you said you were a size 18 and then I scrolled to your picture, you look like you have a good shape with a defined waist.

I know how you feel about a large stomach though, my eye just gravitates to it on myself. I do tend to go for something in at the waist and then flouncing outwards, as I don’t have the patience for shape wear (weak bladder and an enjoyment of boozy beverages = a bad idea for Spanx!)

TheOGCCL · 28/11/2022 22:44

No one looks good with a camera positioned below them like that.and nor do people see you from that angle. I think part of it is your posture too. You don't need much different, maybe just something slightly looser so it skims. The style is great.

Whitwhit · 28/11/2022 22:45

You’ve got a great figure Op!!
This place gets mentioned quite often and I think some of the dresses would suit you (but they are a bit pricier than £75 unfortunately, but some are still on sale TODAY)

Bombshell

ie:

Red
Sequin
Black

Lentilweaver · 28/11/2022 22:46

You are never a size 18!

Sorry, no idea about dresses though:)

Suemademedoit · 28/11/2022 22:46

You have Nigella Lawson’s shape: boobs and tidy waist, just a bit of a tummy. Honestly, with the right underwear and platform heels I think you can wear that dress (although the long sleeves do you no favours). Or go for the style Nigella favours, classic Vivienne Westwood (high street version). Whatever it is, sleeveless or capped sleeves!

You have a tremendous figure. Make the most of it!

helpmegetdressed · 28/11/2022 22:47

Thank you for nice comments - picture is maybe more flattering than I thought because honestly it did look a bit silly in person. This was with the big scary sucky in underwear too.

Don’t meant to be running myself down - I’m generally fairly ok but I just feel a bit lost clothing wise these days - have hit that point/ age where what you used to wear doesn’t suit (or fit) anymore and it’s combined with having a baby/ now toddler (older mum) plus a change of career and lifestyle really that mean I very rarely have to get dressed in anything ‘proper’ these days. I feel like I’ve no idea what suits me anymore.

You truly have a great figure, OP. Great legs.

TerraNostra · 28/11/2022 22:48

It looks great from the front! And you have spectacular knockers.

I know what you mean about the side view though, I have the same issue myself.

I'd say you need something that is similar to that one on top but which flares out from the waist. Also the sleeves on that one are a bit long.

Sorry, here’s some examples when I say ‘in at the waist and then flouncing outwards’

How about this?

Bobbybobbins · 28/11/2022 22:52

I think it looks great but appreciate you might not feel comfortable.

I think a low ish neckline, defined high waist then more A line skirt would suit. You are a similar shape to me and it's my stomach that annoys me but I still tend more to hour glass shape.

DelphiniumBlue · 28/11/2022 22:54

Pretty Kitty dresses are very flattering for those of us with boobs and a bit of a belly!

WaveyHair · 28/11/2022 22:54

Your figure is lovely - would you consider this? It would show off your waist and the pleats hide any tummy issues?

StreamingCervix · 28/11/2022 22:55

That’s a nice dress Terra, lovely colour. I’m not mad about the frilly sleeves though, but as someone on the shorter side I tend to just fold them in on the inside.

helpmegetdressed · 28/11/2022 22:57

Thank you all - some really good pointers and some pretty ones suggested - I’m going to go through properly and maybe order some to try tomorrow.

Im also going to go through my ‘going out stuff’ that has all been vacuum bagged away as we’ve a tiny house and no storage space - I’m sure there may have been a few bits of the sort of shapes being suggested in there.

Ooh Pretty Kitty looks promising both style and budget wise thank you.

Thank you everyone, I think I know what I should be looking at now!

I read your build up and fully expected you to be some freakishly barrel shaped, fat-ankled troll. Then I saw the photo and laughed. You're absolutely gorgeous- I would kill cause severe injury to have that figure..!

The dress looks nice, but definitely you can wear anything designed for womanly curves and show off your ankles. Lots of great options on the thread already...

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 28/11/2022 23:03

Good time to buy a dress op there are loads of sales on!

How about this at Joanie? They have really lovely dresses in a wide range of sizes and 40% off right now Star

Bunce1 · 28/11/2022 23:04

Dress is a wee bit tight, but it is a great shape on you so maybe go with a similar thing?

Ditch the shoes they look really uncomfortable and tight.

I would go for

Black pointy ankle boots, black leather high waisted pencil skirt, fine knit deep v neck cropped jumper in a frosty icey blue with some dangly show stopper earrings.

or
high waisted flared trousers, silky cami top tucked in and a fluffy cropped cardi on top. Pointy court shoes.
