Box dye on balayage?

Hey! Are there any hair dressers here?

I have balayage hair, natural hair is very dark brown.

My hair is super dry and I want to go back to dark brown.
Can I simply use box dye on it? Or because it's blonde/light brown on the ends, can I not do this?

Thank you :)

Following for tips :)

I’m in a similar boat and plan to use a dark colour. I suspect it just won’t take as well on the lighter bits so will still look less uniform ( which I want)

I know it sounds wierd but you need to 'fill' the blonde and lighter browns with a copper/red colour before covering that with a brown- this is to stop it going green. It should still look multi tonal as the copper/red will take differently depending on how light the hair is. Only apply the copper/red on the lighter ends- not the roots. Then once developed, wash off, dry and apply your brunette colour, all over if needed.

Do not be worried if you have literally orange hair after the first stage! The brunette (level 5) covers really well and ends up a rich tone instead of greeny!

I've done this before on my dark brown balayaged hair and it was fine. My hair is very fine though and a lot of it and I guess different hair reacts in different ways.

Thanks for your replies! I am tempted to just go into the hair dressers and let them do it as I don't want to mess up and end up with green hair 😂

@Mojitomogul do you have links to suggestions for colours? Especially for the copper / red dye

For box dye, I've used the loreal casting creme gloss a few times and been absolutely fine with that. You want the 7.34 or 6.45 for the copper or red- depends how dark your hair is, only apply on the lighter ends.
Then a nice brunette over the top just use a 5.3 (this is a warm golden brown) or a 5.13 (more of an ashy brown -may seem quite dark).
Haven't seen any pics of your hair so I hope I'm not recommending too dark in the colours but it shouldn't be too far off what's on the boxes!

@Mojitomogul you're a legend. Thank you. I will post a photo of my hair tomorrow in the day light and see if you still think the same :)

I’ve done it when I got bored of balayage and it was fine. I really liked it actually. I went for a dark blonde/light brown as I’m quite fair anyway.

Have attached my pics of the process! The orange covers really well and comes out a nice brunette. It will fade over time. This was using trade shop dye- L'Oréal diarichesse in 8.34 and then covered with a 5.
